Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

There's a new Adam/Joan story on FFN that sounds promising. I haven't had the time to read it, though:

If anyone does before me, can you let me know if it's worth reading?

I don't know if it's my problems with staying focused on something that isn't shiny for more than five minutes, but it didn't hold my attention.

Good thing you didn't get through it.  Terrible ending to a not so great story.  I don't get the point of it.  Like at all.  neutral

Yeah, well, you like torture and death so you might dig it.  Me, I kinda wanna slap the writer.

Well, I skipped over the first paragraph but knew I wouldn't have time to read the whole thing. I didn't have the impression that it was anything great, but maybe I'm gonna give it another try when I have more time to devote to it.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

Laura, I realized on the way home that I should've been more specific and warned you to stay away from it.  Not the kind of thing you need to be reading these days.  Sandefur and Uncle Chuckie loved it and for some reason expect it to continue.  I guess it's possible that there might be another chapter and that wasn't the end of everything we love, but somehow I doubt it.  I think the writer accomplished exactly what she set out to do, torture and kill.  And I still don't see the point of it.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

Honestly, it didn't have much of an effect on me other than "no... just... no".  I did see you said torture and death earlier, so I knew someone was gonna die.

And, weirdly, death  in general doesn't get much of a reaction from me anymore other than "oh... well, that sucks".    Yeah, I'd like to forget that people die but... they do.   Right now, I think the only thing that can get some kind of rise out of me is something about suicide.  I've always been like that, now it's like 20 times worse.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

I feel you on that one.  Since my stepdad killed himself in 2000, I can't take that stuff either.  Actually, for a really long time, realistic gun violence upset me too.  I still can't watch the bloody parts of hospital shows.  Can't do most modern horror movies.  Absolutely can't stand movies where people torture each other.  That's why I had such an extreme reaction to An American Crime and still wish I'd never seen it.  I don't like stuff about ghosts anymore either.  Unless it's cartoony, death stuff in general has a tendency to nag at me and I avoid it.  I saw Milk a couple of weekends ago and I loved it.  I knew what was going to happen.  But it just tore me up.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

For me it's car crashes.  I just saw Grey's Anatomy for the first time since Whinnie died last week.  Anytime there's some kind of car crash, I have to leave the room.

I was just thinking a few days ago, after Adam disappeared in Common Thread and Joan told him she thought he was committing suicide, he said he couldn't do that to her.  One, because he knew how it devastated people.  The one that struck me was that it was like he knew one more thing would break her and the last thing he wanted to do was make her hurt worse.

Not to judge your dad or anyone else... I just can't stand people killing themselves.  It's such a waste.  I understand mental/emotional illnesses and can see a reason there, but just killing yourself because life sucks I can't wrap my head around.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

Yeah, that's why I never bought people who write Adam in fics as a suicidal wimp.  He just wouldn't.  Ever.  Think about it, sure.  But he'd never do it.

I agree with you about doing it just because life sucks.  I was really angry at him for like over a year.  But the fact was he'd just barely survived colon cancer, and an unsuccessful back surgery.  Not only was he in terrible pain, his back doctor (who had no right) prescribed him the ant-depressant, Zoloft.  It's known to cause suicidal thoughts in teens and the elderly.  He was 75.  You can Google it and find tons of horror stories.  In my opinion, the VA and the healthcare system in general killed him.  And my father.  And my mom too.  I really wish I didn't have to watch hospital shows.  Unfortunately, they have great casts and characters.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

I know all about Zoloft, I used to take it (on a VERY low dosage).  Even at 17 I knew well enough not to give any to anyone and one of my friends practically BEGGED me.  If a 17 year old can read the warnings, a doctor should be able to.

So um... when was the last good A/J story published/updated?

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

Been a while.  Life's been kicking our asses, hasn't it?  But I think we're all itching to write, aren't we?  I know I am.

I'm glad you don't take Zoloft anymore.  And I'm glad you never let anyone else take it.  It's a vile drug.  I'm glad people are waking up to that fact.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

I keep trying, but every time I get an idea it never seems to stick in my head long enough for me to write it down.  I have an R/A fic on the way, though.  Maybe.  I think.  Someday.

I don't take Zoloft anymore because it wasn't/isn't compatible with Ritalin.  Controlling my ADD is more important to me than my depression.  I know that sounds horrible, but for me bouncing of the walls and being hyper is worse than being depressed.  I've been completely off depression medication for almost two years, but I got some Xanax after Whinnie died, those I only take on my worst days.  I know it's not the way I'm supposed to take medications, but you gotta do what works, right?

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

I was gonna ask if you could get Xanax.  It's the only thing that worked for my stepdad.  You see, Mr. BackDoctor was wrong to prescribe anti-depressants to my stepdad.  He wasn't depressed, he suffered from anxiety.  My mom was on Xanax for years.  They used it to ween her off Valium in the 80's.  I have used it for my insomnia, but I didn't have a doctor for years, so I haven't had any for years.  If it's used right --- which to me is however you need it --- it can be a wonder drug.  My mom needed it to just be "normal".  My stepdad had very bad insomnia and lots of pain.  It helped him manage both.  It worked for my insomnia, but that's all I ever used it for.  I wish doctors had better sense about these things.

Re: JoA: Adam & Adam/Joan stories

Well, I didn't exactly get Xanax in the best way.  Whinnie took it and her mom gave me, Shawn and Kym some of her pills to get us through it.   Which is why I don't take it often, I don't want to get used to it like I did Zoloft.  I saw my doctor though and told him the situation and he said it'd be fine for short term.  Once I don't have anymore, I don't have anymore.
