Re: Something I've noticed about films credits

I'm guessing it's related more to the industry wanting to showcase the full crew more rather than selected crew members like older films.

I know what you mean by the red on black background. I have Blade on DVD and the red text is hideous and impossible to fully work out. All it is is a red blur.

Re: Something I've noticed about films credits

Do many people even pay attention to the credits anymore?  Could it be a monetary thing?

I always sit throught the credits for a movie. The only times i don't is in the cinema when they are trying to clean up.

Re: Something I've noticed about films credits

I also always sit through the credits right until the very end, unless there's a reason why I can't (people I'm with wanting to leave, etc.). Could it maybe also be that screens tend to get bigger and bigger, so that in the theater it's easier to read small writing? Or maybe that more people are involved in movies nowadays (more FX, more technology) that they need to cram more names into the credits and don't want them to run for 15 minutes?

And to add to that, the credits for Gran Torino are the shortest credits I've seen for a very very long time.

For me it's a way of showing respect to all the guys who have worked hard to create the film.

Yeah, I'm with you Simon.  Plus Dave and I like to spot the funny names in the credits.  There's always a few.  And most importantly, sometimes you have to stick around to find out the name and artist for some song you liked in the movie.  Like the Remy Zero song, "Fair" in Fanboys.

Re: Something I've noticed about films credits

There are more credits in movies now because the schedules have gotten shorter and shorter.  So in the past, for example, the visual effects for a movie would have been all done at one company by one crew (but they would have had a year to do them), now they are doing the visual effects in a couple of months, so they farm it out to several companies, who all have full crews.  This is true of a lot of aspects of the films.

The reason for the shorter schedules is kind of wild.  Because movies are costing so much now, the interest on the films budget is so much, that it makes it cheaper to have multiple crews and lots of overtime then to have a longer production schedule.

Is that how your job works?  You're not part of a specific show's crew, you work for one of the post houses that shows farm out to?

Re: Something I've noticed about films credits

Tv is a little different.  They save money by having smaller crews(but still shorter schedules less than a week to cut the sound).  So I work for a sound house, which is hired to do a series(and I am part of the deal)  and, I will do the entire season.  So, on Life on Mars, I have cut every single sound effect in the series.  Because I am the sound designer, I am part of the crew, I just am not on the set.  But I did get a crew jacket.

But on feature films, they will bring people on as they need them, (a lot of people over the last couple of weeks before the end.)  With everyone doing some small section, or sometimes specitfic elements (one person may cut all the gun shots, while another person cuts all the cars, etc.)

Oh, that's cool about Life On Mars.  Where do you go from there?  Anything lined up?

Cool.  It's good to know that the big wheel keeps on turnin'.  It's hard to see that from our perspective.  I just wish things would loosen up so Chris could get more work.
