I've been following this story very closely, hoping I wouldn't have to type these words... Natasha Richardson has succumbed to her severe head injury. She has passed away. Breaks my heart. I've been a fan for about a decade and a half. This is such an incredible tragedy for a beautiful, young family, I can barely fathom it. I'm speechless.

I found out when I got home and I have been in shock ever since. I really truly had hope she would make it. I really didn't know how bad it was. I've been a fan also and everytime I think of her I see her smiling beautiful face. I haven't been hit this hard in a long time, I felt like I knew her. I can just see how lovely a person she was. My heart goes out to her husband and boys as well...I can't imagine. I just can't get over it...

That's a really horrible tragedy. Natasha was such a beautiful and talented actress. She will be greatly missed.

I love that whole family. Her mom, her dad, her aunt, her beautiful husband. Carol and I were just talking about them recently. I read Whitley Strieber's sequels to The Hunger --- The Last Vampire and Lilith's Dream. There's a great character in there for a big, strapping 50ish man and they're supposed to be developing a movie based on these books. I was trying to figure out who could play this guy, Paul Ward and Carol suggested Liam Neeson. I'd be totally cool with that. He's magnificent. Natasha was an amazing actor. And she seemed like such a genuinely nice, down to earth person. She's in the Land of Summer now. And we'll miss her terribly. Never more than her family though. They were robbed.

I just don't understand, there are these people that have these terrible ski accidents and fall from hundreds of feet and hit all these rocks and come out alright and then Natasha has a beginner lesson and doesn't hit anything and has terrible brain damage!! Why?!! Sorry, I'm just really mad right now too. She really did seem like a genuine person and that was why I admired her so much besides her work. And I loved how she was such a good mom. That whole family IS truly awesome. I especially loved her mom and husband. They WERE robbed. I can't stop thinking about her and her family.

I have read that perhaps she suffered something in her brain that caused her to collapse on the slopes. She got up and thought everything was fine but later starting getting headaches. I wonder if there will be an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Honestly, I don't think they'll be need one. I'm pretty sure it was just a fall and she hit her head hard enough to rupture something. What I heard is that her brain basically flooded with blood and her brain swelled. She needed to get to the hospital immediately, but she didn't think it was serious. If she had just randomly collapsed, someone might have realized there was something wrong and gotten her help in time. Maybe there was something there that made it worse, but that's all I've heard about it.
I only saw her in Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan, she was beautiful and amazing. She'll be missed.

Yeah, stay away from IMDb in situations like this. The worst, most wretched, horrible people seem to come out of the woodwork.
I read an article by a neurologist last night who said that she might've had a fairly rare blood-clotting problem that had gone undiagnosed because it doesn't cause manifest until you have a serious injury. He said if that was the case, nothing could've saved her. If she'd gone straight to the hospital they probably still would not have caught it in time. Unless she was in a CAT scan in a matter of minutes after the accident, they would not have known she had a rupture and might bleed out.
It's just so awful. So sudden. I know Laura can relate to that.
And I'm think I may never, ever be able to watch Nell again.

One thing I can't believe is that she apparently wasn't wearing a helmet, then she just shook the fall off. Falls when you hit your head are always serious. Especially if you lose consciousness. Even if she didn't rupture anything and everything else went fine, if she had a concussion she could have slipped into a coma during a nap or something. Honestly, I think her instructor should have known that and taken her to the hospital even if she said felt fine.

So sad and not just for her family, whose grief must be insurmountable, but for all of us. She was a rare talent, and will be missed. My heart goes out to everyone who loved her.
Sadly lots of people don't wear helmets while skiing, particularly on the bunny slopes. I wish the resort had insisted. Hell, I wish every kid wore protective head gear until they went off to college. Also unfortunately picturesque ski lodges are rarely in close proximity to major trauma centers. It sounds like the people at the resort did the right thing and insisted she get checked out. But I guess maybe something got missed, with tragic results.

Autopsy results are in...

From the other article...
A high impact fall on the head can also cause three different types of bleeding within the brain: 1) an intracranial hemorrhage, which begins as a microscopic rupture of a blood vessel deep within the brain, 2) a subdural hematoma, which is a bleed that occurs in the dura, which is the outer layer of the brain, or 3) an epidural hematoma, which is a hemmorrhage, that takes place between the outer skull and the dura.
As for why Natasha initially seemed perfectly fine after her spill, apparently the hemorrhage can begin in one small spot in the brain and then grow in intensity.
All of these types of bleeding and the cervical spine fracture, result in dramatic swelling of the brain and pressure in the skull, which also pushes down dangerously on the brain stem, which is the center of life, according to Dr. Sun.

I'm not sure if you've guys have seen it but it's new to me...just the fact that she fell and seemed to hit her head enough for them to call for an ambulance and that she turned it away.
Head injury from blunt impact killed actress, official confirms
(CNN) -- Actress Natasha Richardson died of injuries caused by blunt impact to the head, the New York City Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Thursday.
The death was ruled an accident, the office said.
Paramedics dispatched to help Richardson minutes after she fell on a Canadian ski slope Monday were turned away and did not have a chance to check her injury, the ambulance service director told a Toronto, Canada, newspaper.
Richardson -- a film star, Tony-winning stage actress and member of the famed Redgrave acting family -- died two days later in a New York hospital from a head injury suffered at a Quebec resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.
Yves Coderre, operations director for Ambulances Radisson, told Toronto's The Globe and Mail newspaper on Wednesday that his company sent an ambulance to the slopes at Mont Tremblant Ski Resort after a call from the ski patrol.
"They never saw the patient," Coderre said. "So they turned around." Watch how brain injuries can be hidden »
Coderre did not say who sent the ambulance away. Efforts by CNN to reach Coderre have been unsuccessful.
A resort spokeswoman said a statement was being prepared in response to the latest report.
An earlier statement from the resort said a paramedic from its ski patrol "arrived on the scene within minutes" after Richardson, 45, fell during a lesson on a beginners' trail.
The ski patrol paramedic "did not find any visible sign of injury," it said.
"As standard protocol, the ski patrol insisted Ms. Richardson be transported to the base of the hill in a rescue toboggan," it said. "Once at the base of the hill, Ms. Richardson was advised by staff to consider seeking additional medical attention which was declined."
The resort's statement said Richardson, accompanied by her instructor, returned to her hotel but about an hour after the fall was "not feeling good," the statement said.
Another ambulance was later called to the hotel, where paramedics found her conscious, but she "wasn't in good shape," Coderre said.
Richardson was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Hopital du Sacre-Coeur in Montreal. From there she was transferred to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
She and her husband, actor Liam Neeson, have two children, Michael and Daniel.
Her family issued a short statement Wednesday night acknowledging her death.
"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
Richardson is a member of acting royalty. Her grandfather, Sir Michael Redgrave, was a famed British actor. Her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, is an Oscar-winning actress, and her father, late director Tony Richardson, helmed such films as "Look Back in Anger," "The Entertainer" and the Oscar-winning "Tom Jones." Richardson's uncle Corin Redgrave, aunt Lynn Redgrave and sister Joely Richardson are also noted performers.
Natasha Richardson won a Tony for her performance as Sally Bowles in the 1998 revival of "Cabaret" and earned raves for her Blanche DuBois in a 2005 production of "A Streetcar Named Desire."
She was scheduled to perform in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" this year, after a January benefit performance of the show.
Broadway dimmed its lights Thursday evening in tribute to Richardson.

This might be the first I know of her, but it's always sad when people die; especially one with young kids. I checked her movies on IMDB too, but I don't think I've seen any of them but Nell ages ago. She does look a bit familliar...
My heart aches for her family.

The hospital is around 2 1/2 hours away from the resort and the proving of quebec doen't have a medical helicopter...and I got this from the news here... "While Richardson's initial refusal of medical treatment cost her two hours, she also had to be driven to two hospitals. She didn't arrive at a specialized hospital in Montreal until about four hours after the second 911 call from her hotel room at the Mont Tremblant resort, according to a timeline published by Canada's The Globe and Mail newspaper. Not being airlifted directly to a trauma center could have cost Richardson crucial moments."
