Hey, you'll never know if you don't try. I think I'd go for it, but of course I don't have your experiences from the past to look back on.

Re: Randomness

I'm pretty sure you know from your own experience that it's not that easy.  I spent the better part of 18 years trying to crack the Hollywood nut.  And right now, all of that just feels like time wasted that I'll never get back.  I'm just not sure I can give anymore of my life to something that's such a crapshoot.  And something that will probably just break my heart again.

Thanks, Mel.  I pretty much get all my yayas out with fict these days.  And I don't have to fret over competitions and waiting to hear back from agents and studios and stuff.

Re: Randomness

Don't really have any time that you'd call spare.  And what little free time I do have is spent reading, keeping up with my shows and occasionally writing fan fic.  Screewriting isn't really fun, or something you can do casually.  And if I were to get back into it, I'd wanna sell what I write and that is the really sucky part.  I used to go at it full bore.  Took classes, entered competitions, chased agents, went to Pitch Fest.  I had a great writing partnership for a couple of years.  After that fell apart and I got lied to one too many times by yet another unscrupulous producer, my ambition and my confidence just kind of withered away.  I haven't been able to get it back.  Maybe I'm just too old to play the game anymore.

Re: Randomness

That's exactly why I write the way I do.  If I get an idea, I grab a piece of paper and scribble it down, then as soon as I can I sit down and write it on a computer in about 30 minutes to an hour and I'm satisfied.

In my Sophmore (10th grade) year in high school, I wrote a short novel for NaNoWriMo.  That summer, my friends decided it would be funny to send it to a few publishing houses to see what happened.  What followed was complete and total hell.  It got picked up by a local agency, but there was all kinds of stuff that I just wasn't prepared to handle at 16/17 years old.  Ruined my summer and part of my Junior year until I broke my contract.  It's really not a game you get into unless you're prepared to fully commit yourself for at least two years of people telling you how and what to write, then basically tearing you down and ripping something you've worked so hard on to shreds.

I know I got lucky and I'll probably never have an opportunity like that ever again.  And knowing I destroyed it for myself kills me.  But really, it's the writing part that's fun.  Everything after, if you're lucky enough to have an after, really kinda sucks.

Re: Randomness

Didn't know that Laura.  So you've got battle scars too.  Wear 'em proudly.

I had an agent for a year and he didn't do a damn thing for me.  I went around him and all by myself, I got my script all the way to Doug Robinson at CAA (back when he was Ron Meyer's assistant) and the bastard lied to me about who read it.  I had a meeting with a producer at New Line to discuss possibly doing something with the last script I wrote before I threw in the towel.  He shined me on as long as he could and then stopped taking my calls.  It's a terrible, cutthroat business and these days I can't really remember why I wanted to be in it at all.

Decided to watch The Muppet Movie tonight and have now found my favourite quote.

Life's like a movie, write your own ending.

Such a great quote to motivate someone to get the life they want.

Re: Randomness

This is kind of a downer, probably, but I just watched CSI: NY and it's the first time this show has made me cry. And a little ashamed of being German too. It was about Nazis and neo-Nazis, and about what happened in Hitler Germany. It's not like it's the first time I've seen a show or movie or coverage about it, of course, but somehow this one hit home.

I personally don't have any ties to the Nazis, at least not that I'm aware of. But thinking about how a nation can get this twisted and murder and torture so many people with full intent makes me sick to my stomach. It's even sadder to know that there's still people out there, all around the world, living the lie that Hitler tried to preach and teach. I don't understand how anyone can hate someone just because of their race or skin color. It's what you do that defines you, not what you look like.

I also know that our generation of Germans today isn't supposed to pay or feel guilty about what Hitler and his followers did. Still, it's a part of our history that I am not proud of. It's one of the reasons why Germans don't tend to be patriotic or, if they are, why they don't tend to show it in public. Seeing what "we" did to millions of Jews during the Third Reich makes it hard for me to feel proud to be German.

So here's to betterment and change of heart. May we all learn from history and see that it doesn't repeat itself.
