Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

OK, I've read that he needs glasses because he's near-sighted.

First. He's got tons of money - couldn't he have gotten better style of glasses.

Second. What about contact lenses?
Unless he can't - perhaps his eyes are too sensitive.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

OK, first, he obviously does wear contacts sometimes or he'd be wearing glasses all the time.  Near-sightedness doesn't just come and go when it's convenient.  It's just a pain in the ass to wear them all the time.  I only wear mine during the day, take 'em out as soon as I get home for the evening.  And second, I don't know why, both those black horn-rim glasses are all the rage right now.   Maybe Rachel Maddow started a trend, I don't know.  But JT obviously thinks he looks good.  And you know what?  He does.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

I have black horn-rims and I love them.  Mine are more oval in shape, but it all depends on what shape your face is as far as what shape/style works for you.

And as far as him being able to afford something "better", they probably cost him a pretty penny.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Timothy Olyphant will star in FX's drama pilot that is based on the Elmore Leonard short story Fire in the Hole.

The currently untitled project follows U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) when he returns to his hometown in Kentucky.

"He has a certain jaggedness, but he also loves his job," said creator/exec producer Graham Yost. "He is like an anachronism: He wears a hat, cowboy boots and a holster on his hip. It's a little bit like he was born 100 years too late."

As Yost gets ready for end-of-May start date on the pilot, which will be directed by Michael Dinner, Yost recently received an endorsement from Leonard himself.

"One of the great thrills was getting to speak to Elmore a couple of weeks ago," Yost stated. "He said he liked my adaptation a lot."

Anchor Bay hits 'Open Road'
Picks up theatrical and home video rights to the dramedy

By Steven Zeitchik

May 11, 2009, 03:00 AM ET
Anchor Bay is hitting the road, picking up theatrical and home video rights to Michael Meredith family dramedy "The Open Road."

Wim Wenders exec produced the film, which unfolds over the course of a road trip that a grown son takes with his estranged father, a former baseball star. The pair travel from Ohio to Houston to see the son's mother, from whom the baseball star is also estranged, in the hospital..

Justin Timberlake stars as the son and Jeff Bridges as his father, with Mary Steenburgen playing the mother/wife. Odd Lot Entertainment and Perfect Weekend produced the pic.

Writer-director Meredith found inspiration for the script in his relationship with his own father, the former football star Don Meredith.

Anchor Bay, the Liberty Media division that specializes in DVD as well as limited theatrical releases, has been busy on the acquisitions front lately, scooping up rights to fest titles such as "Bart Got a Room" and the Ashton Kutcher Sundance pic "Spread."

It aims to open "Road" this summer.

Oh, this is so awesome.   Anton Yelchin is on Kimmel tonight... with Hank Azaria!  Huff & Byrd together again!  Hank makes a point of saying that the last time they were together, Anton was yelling swear words in his face.   LOL!

Oh wow, Ben Thomas posted some cool Joe's Garage pics on Facebook and the great thing is they feature him AND Becky & Jason Paige.  Woohoo!  This is probably during Crew Slut, my favorite song in the show.

Edited to add: They're playing Atlanta in July.  They're in Germany right now.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

If they do it like Romeo+Juliet, it'll be the real play, not modern vernacular.  You really CAN'T update Shakespeare's words unless you just want to turn it into complete garbage.  NO ONE has ever done that successfully and no one should ever try.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

The only time a "modern adaption" of a Shakespeare play works is if they re-tool it and make it something slightly different.  Examples: 10 Things I Hate About You was based on Taming of the Shrew, She's the Man and Just One of the Guys were both based on Twelfth Night.  Not ground breaking movies by any stretch, but they're better than updated versions of the plays were nothing really changes except the year.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

Yeah, that kind of thing has been done for as long as movies have been made.  And that's perfectly fine and often very successful because Shakespeare's plots are great and you can do all kinds of things with them.  West Side Story is based on Rome & Juliet, for instance.  And that movie "O", based on Othello is decent, too.  That kind of thing I wouldn't mind.  But if it's going to be called Hamlet, it better damn-well be Hamlet.

BTW, I'm convinced that the A&E biker gang TV series, Sons Of Anarchy is based on Hamlet.

Re: In Praise of Chris's Colleagues

And more on Hamlet.  Guess it will be modern-day.  In that case, they shouldn't call it Hamlet.

Hirsch, Hardwicke booked for 'Hamlet'
Jinks/Cohen to present classic story as suspense thriller
By Steven Zeitchik

June 2, 2009, 07:54 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Overture will take on the Bard -- with a twist.

The Liberty Media studio has signed up for a modern take on "Hamlet" and attached a slew of big names to pull off the task.

"Twilight" and "thirteen" director Catherine Hardwicke is attached to direct, with Emile Hirsch, who helped conceive the idea, attached to star as the title character.

Ron Nyswaner, best known for penning Oscar winner "Philadelphia," will write the script.

"Milk" producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen will produce via their Jinks/Cohen banner.

The company said it is awaiting a finished script in the coming months and hopes to go into production not long after.

The new "Hamlet" will center on similar themes as the original play but will be set in contemporary America. In the new version, a young man must decide whether to kill his uncle to avenge the death of his father.

Jinks and Cohen said their "goal is to present the story as a suspense thriller. We want to make it exciting and accessible for an audience today."

Overture CEO and COO Chris McGurk and Danny Rosett noted that "with its universal themes of death, revenge, love and even teen angst -- the story of Hamlet is perhaps as timely and influential today as it was when it was written over 400 years ago."

Shakespeare has undergone a series of retellings in the past decade, with teen pic "10 Things I Hate About You," which was a retelling of "Taming of the Shrew," and Ethan Hawke starring in a Hamlet update that focused on corporate politics.

At least there's real talent behind it.  It might actually be good.
