Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

OK since this is about the only thing anyone's making these days --- and I expect it to get worse in the economic downturn --- I figured these things deserve their own thread.  We can announce, vent, discuss whatever about them here.  Starting with this one.  It was only a matter of time...

Sony To Make H.R. Puf-n-Stuf movie

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41288

As a kid, I adored this show.  I remember going to see the movie at the old Strand Theater on the Marietta Square.  As an adult, I have been known to watch marathons whenever Nickelodeon would air them.  It's a totally different experience watching it as a kid and watching it as an adult.  This show was very subversive in its way.  And comepletely psychedelic.  I still adore it.

I have no idea whatsoever how they could make a modern Puf movie.  But they'd damn well better keep Jimmy a British kid.  Anybody know if Freddie Highmore can sing?  Eh, he's already 17 anyway.  Wow, time flies!

You know, maybe they should hook up with Jim Henson Studios.  At least then we could count on some quality puppetry.

Like Linus said, "You gotta keep the flaws, real puppets, crappy effects..."

But I gotta wonder, what's next?  A Sigmund & The Seamonsters movie.  Egads!  Forget I said that.

Moved it. You have to click on "Move Topic" at the very bottom of the page on the left and then choose the section you want to put it in. Best uncheck "Leave redirect topic", otherwise it'll leave a redirection thread in the original section.

They'll probably hire Zac Efron.  Maybe he won't be a wuss and back out of this one.

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

I sort of liked the modernization of "Richard III" starring Sir Ian McKellen.  And I didn't haaaate the Leonardo DiCaprio/Claire Danes version of "Romeo & Juliet".  But it's a trend that I'm uncomfortable with.  And Shakespeare's words shouldn't be changed, weather to modernize or otherwise make it more accessible.

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

I still haven't seen Richard III, though I always wanted to since I'm a big McKellan fan from way back.  I've not overly found of Romeo+Juliet, but I absolutely get why a lot of young people love the movie.

To try to clarify my point from yesterday, I don't mind modern stories that are "based on" Shakespeare at all (like the aforementioned 10 Things I Hate About You), and I don't think those movies need to stick to the dialog.  But if you're going to make a movie called Hamlet, you'd damn well better stick to the play no matter what century you set it in.  In that sense, I'm very proud of them for trying it with Romeo+Juliet.

Ken Brannagh's Hamlet was not set in the proper time frame, but it stuck to the Bard's words.  And it was rather smashing in it's way.  Oddly, my favorite version of Hamlet is the 1990 Mel Gibson one.  I saw it in the theater and I was absolutely enthralled.

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

Yeah, exactly.  I remember a TV movie from a few years ago with Jessica Lange that was a present-day King Lear.  It had a great cast and they did a good job with it, I thought.  But if it's supposed to be Hamlet or R&J or King Lear or whatever, then it should stick to the play.  But it's gonna happen, since Shakespeare is in the public domain.

I liked the Mel Gibson version of Hamlet, too.  Glenn Close made a terrific Gertrude!

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

A couple of quick thoughts.

It is pointless to do shakespeare without the words.  THAT is what makes shakespeare great.  His stories are fine some are pretty good, some are pretty bad.  But the dialog which has subtlity and multiple meanings, and wild humor (yes there are dirty jokes in shakespeare), and ...  To put it simply, I can't hear the St. Crispins  speech from Henry V and not go want to fight, and I don't fight or believe in violence.  That is what is special about the words.

As for the main topic, My brain turns off when I hear about one of these sequels or remakes or tvs to movies.  So many are soooo bad, that it isn't worth the interest.  I am only looking forward to a couple of movies this summer (Up, The Hangover, Inglorious Basterds) and none are sequeals or remakes.

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

The new trend, Rick, is going to be movies made from board games.  First up, Where's Waldo?  I kid you not.  Gee, can't wait for Candyland and Chutes & Ladders!

I will say though that I adore Clue.  I've seen it like a hundred times, know the dialog by heart, and get sucked into it just about every time it's on TV.  In strict artistic terms, I undertand that it's not a great movie.  But that CAST!  And the snappy dialog.  To me, it's just incredibly hilarious.  And it actually has it's own little cult of worshipers.  LOL!

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

Of course there have been a few good ones The fugitive for example, but they are so out numbered by the bad ones.

Clue is a much better movie than it should be.  I found it watchable, which is saying something.

And board games make as much sense as making movies out of amusement park rides.  I think I heard Disney was making a new one, was it Space Mountain?

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

Disney is making Tomorroland actually, with The Rock in the lead.  And I thought movies from rides was profundly stupid too, but Pirates kinda turned that notion on its head.

Even if the Pirates movies worked (and I only liked the first one) it was still a very bad idea, remember Country Bears? or the Haunted Mansion?

And I think they should make It's a Small World, the Movie.  And the song can play for 2 hours.

Re: Sequels, Prequels, Reboots, Adapatations

Yes, I agree.  I just meant in terms of success.  I've only ever seen the first Pirates movie.  I got through about 10 minutes of Haunted Mansion on cable before I got bored and kind of appalled and changed the channel.  Even an appearance by Chris Walken and voice work by Haley Osment couldn't get me to watch Country Bears.

The only positive note is that sooner or later, they'll run out of rides.

It would seem logical that they would run out of rides, but if another of these makes money... be afraid, be very afraid.  autopia, the movie: matterhorn, the movie: Monorail, the movie.  teacups, the movie

Matterhorn, LOL!  Reminds me of how they've been trying to get Vincent Chase to make that movie for YEARS on Entourage and he hates the idea and keeps turning it down.

But I would pay anything to see Teacups: The Movie!
