Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

That is so... I don't even know the right word for it.  Just because you haven't followed her doesn't mean she's a washed-up has-been.  Just because you never heard of The Runaways doesn't make them obscure.  If you think no one remembers Joan or cares about the movie, I suggest you go take a look at the IMDb message board for it.  It's incredibly active.  Some days I can't even keep up with it.  Tons of people are following it, both older fans of Joan and Cherie like me, and younger fans of Kristen, Dakota and the other actresses.  The threads where people are begging for a copy of the script that got leaked alone are getting huge.

But then you don't care about Joan or any of this, it's obviously not your cup of tea, so why bother?

Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

Do you need pop charts to tell you what to like?  Will you only buy a record if it's in the top ten?  Is a musician only great if they fill stadiums?  Miley Cyrus sells out stadiums and has hit records.  So do the Jonas Brothers.  Is that what you call art?  Or rock-n-roll?  Will they be making a movie about these kids 35 years after the fact?  Charts are no measure of art, never will be.  They're a measure of commerce, and people will buy any old crap.  Obviously.  I don't even know why we're talking about charts in the first place.  I never said they topped the pop charts.  I have no idea what the sales figure are for my favorite artists.  I haven't paid any attention to the damn charts since I was 12, listening to America's Top 40 on my transistor radio.  I outgrew that.  Hell, I pretty much stopped listening to commercial radio all together when I was about 23.

Ninety-five percent of my favorite artists have rarely if ever had a conventional "hit".  Does that mean they don't have incredibly loyal, diverse and widespread fanbases?  Hell no!  Go look at my favorites on my MySpace page.  The ones who are still active sell out venues when they play and they sell enough records to live comfortably.   Apparently, you will never have heard of most of them.  Your loss.  Go ahead and stay shut down to the amazingly huge world of great music out there that will never, ever be more than a blip on the charts.

Joan has never stopped touring and recording, and every album has been progressively better than the one that preceded it.  People have never stopped showing up for her gigs, which are always fantastic.  Ever seen her live?  Never mind, I already know the answer to that.  Shockingly, I have.  Multiple times, the first being in 1983.  She puts on a hell of a show and it's always packed out.  She has a hardcore fanbase who will never abandon her.  If you don't believe me, go float this shit on the IMDb board and see what kind of reaction you get.  It's not just "fangirls" posting there.  It's musicians, other filmmakers, even people who know some of the folks being portrayed in the film.  We've got people of all ages and a lot of them have told stories about their fandoms that go back decades.  Some are Joan fans, some are hardcore Runaways fans.  If you had read any of it, you would know that this is nothing like a bunch of idiots responding to the ridiculous viral marketing of one stupid movie.

And if you really think that a movie about Joan's fairly conventional solo career and how she got to make a movie with Michael J. Fox is more interesting than the seriously rock-n-roll story of a crazy, colorful LA fringe-dweller who cobbled together the world's first all-girl, jailbait punk rock band, then I just have nothing else to say to you on this subject.  This is a movie that has been crying out to be made for many, many years.  You never heard of The Runaways, fine.  The movie's not being made for you.  It's for those of us who loved the LA rock scene in the '70's and followed the band, and then watched Cherie try to have an acting career while Joan and Lita built solid solo rock careers.  You think reading a couple of paragraphs on Wiki or looking up their chart history is knowing a band or an artist?  Please.  Those of us who know these women and their story are thrilled that someone is finally going to tell it.

There's already a documentary about The Runaways called Edgeplay.  If you wanted to inform your opinion so it would mean something, you could check it out.  But I don't suppose you would bother since these people are just meaningless little nobodies to you.

PS. I think Kristen was still in Joan-character at the Comic con. Just felt like it to me. Everyone else is bashing on her and I'm ready to stragle them. lol.

Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

I heard they are finishing filming in a couple days( or they are already done?)! But then poor Kristen has got to do rehearsals and then film Eclipse, I seriously think she needs to take a break. Nevertheless I'm stoked for the runaways, Kristen is the perfect Joan IMO, and I'm shaking I'm so excited a/b her performing and her voice, we got a little preview in Into The Wild(which I downloaded that little part and I'm obsessively listening to it!) I literally can't wait!!!

Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

Right there with ya, grrrl.  They did finish filming a few days ago, but then Kristen reshot some stuff yesterday.  That's probably where the confusion came in.  By all accounts everything went great.  I'm incredibly excited about the movie.  I wish like hell I could've afforded to see Joan play here.  She did Chastain Park with Heart and I think tickets were $79 or something like that.  I used to see her live every time she came through town, but I've missed her the last 4 or 5 years since I've been pretty much broke all the time.  I just have zero disposable income these days.

I have such high hopes for this movie.  I don't care about this stupid backlash against Kristen and the fact that people can't see Dakota as what she is, a FIFTEEN year old girl.  It's like they think she's still ten.  And the homophobia?  Damn.  But whatever.  I'm reading the script (been too busy this week to get any reading done) and it's great.  It's gritty and raw, kinda brutal and kinda beautiful.  This could be the Sid & Nancy of this generation.

Aw I'm sorry hopefully in the next couple of years you'll get to see her play.

When do you think they will release a trailer?

I think this might be my all time favorite Kristen role...

If people think Dakota is too young they need to watch Cutlass and Push, she's growing up and expanding her roles, people get used to it! Kristen was the exact same way, she's come a long way from Catch That Kid!

Hope so!

Probably around the time New Moon comes out.  wink

I think so too.   Cool coincidence, the first movie Cherie Currie ever did was Foxes, with Jodie Foster.  And Kristen of course played Jodie's daughter brilliantly in Panic Room.  It's like Kristen's fate was tied to The Runaways all along.  It's a synchronicity in a way.

You are exactly right.

Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

Just finally finished reading the script.  (I haven't been reading at lunch for several work days because I had other stuff going on.)  Wow, what an excellent screenplay this movie has!  Based just on this, it should be a terrific film.  It's going to require one hell of a performance from Dakota Fanning since Cherie Currie is the main focus of the story and she goes on quite a rollercoaster ride.  If Dakota lives up to the material, there could be awards in her future.

The other really juicy part in the movie is that of Kim Fowley, played by the excellent Michael Shannon.  If he cuts loose and really plays Kim the way he should be played, he could be bringing home some trophies too.

Can't wait till the first trailers start to appear.  I'm betting that will happen just about the time New Moon hits theaters...  big_smile

I didn't know who Joan Jett was before this movie, but I think I'm gonna watch it because I've grown to appreciate Kriten Stewart as an actress. She was absolutely great it Speak.

Re: The Runaways/Joan Jett/Kristen Stewart - WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

Joan Jett talks about The Runaways and Kristen Stewart...

http://www.billboard.com/news/joan-jett … 095.story#

I'm particularly fond of this quote since there were questions posed as to why anyone would even want to make a movie about such an "obscure" band...

"It was very surreal and hard to put a word on," Jett, who executive produced the film and was on hand for the filming, tells Billboard.com. "If anything it definitely made me smile. It reinforces my love for the band and the fact I think it was an extremely important band, regardless of our level of success in America. It just reinforces my love of the whole time and of the band and what we did and how it was implausible and improbable at the same time."

I will more than likely be seeing The Runaways movie, having been a casual fan of the band back in the day (though I never saw 'em live, just on telly). I will also be seeing, and am really looking forward to, the Ian Dury biopic called Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. I was a BIG fan of Dury & the Blockheads, and it will be cool to see Andy Serkis playing yet another British music icon (he played Martin Hannett in the excellent 24 Hour Party People).

Note -- I just Wiki'ed Martin Hannett and found out that he was the bass player on the great song "Jilted John," which he also produced. I did not know that !
