Re: Randomness

In the old days, before the meltdown, they used to give 13 weeks of unemployment pay.  Which basically amounted to about half of your regulary salary.  But because we're living in hell right now, they've extended the length of time you can draw unemployment.  I'm not sure what it is in Georgia currently though.  I think they had to go as long as 72 weeks in some places, like Detroit where Elaine lives.  I think she collected for 36 weeks before hers ran out.  By the time they passed the extension, she'd finally found work.  She was out for almost 2 years.  She got by literally selling her body to science.  She lived off money from a string of clinical trials for a while and she's still supplementing her income with them.

As for insurance, they have a thing called Cobra which allows you to take your insurance with you when a job ends, but you have to pay for it yourself, which basically means no one can afford it.  And that's why some 47,000,000 people in American don't have insurance at all.  And why the Obama White House is trying so desperately to pass reform.  But since the rethuglicans are complete raving lunatics and they've all but rioted over reform, spurred on by the insurance companies who basically own the rethuglican party, it doesn't look like we're going to get meaningful reform at all.

In other words, things aren't getting any better here, they're just getting worse.

Re: Randomness

Yeah Australia has a very strong unemployment benefit scheme, almost too strong. There are people out there that would rather not get a job and just live on what the government gives them. Its good for those in hard times but its far too easy for people to take advantage of it. We also have government sponsored health care. Its sad to hear you might be losing your job Deb sad I am actually lucky enough to be working in not only the fuel industry but the environmental side of that. So my job will be here for a while to come. I really do hope that somehow this change does work out to be wonderful for you

Re: Randomness

Yeah, maybe it will, but my job was just so perfect and I really loved my boss and co-workers.  It wouldn't bother me half as much if everyday the news wasn't just completely bleak about unemployment figures.  I had a hard enough time when the economy didn't suck ass.

I'm really sorry, Deb. I hope things get better for you. Our economy really sucks right now. It's so unfair that people are getting laid off.

Re: Randomness

Doesn't mean you can't get sick.  My boss just got over a bad bout with some weird respiratory illness that she had to go on steroids to get over when the antibiotics didn't get rid of.  She couldn't even talk for about 3 days.  Luckily, so far, no one else in our office caught it.

I stepped on a piece of glass this morning, ended up with a bloody foot, but still went back to a sound sleep.

Re: Randomness

I just got back from the 8th grade retreat and I went to Cumberland Falls and I went White Water Rafting today. It was so much fun. I fell of the raft 3 times and some guy pulled me in the water. One time I got stuck underneath the raft

Re: Randomness

My brother got thrown from a raft once.  And they were videotaping it.  Scared me to watch it.  So you didn't get hurt?

Re: Randomness

When I was stuck underneath the raft,my leg kept rubbing against a rock I have cuts all over my legs as well as bug bites. Last night I accidently cut myself in the shower with a razor. And I fell down the steps yesterday and I have a huge bruise and scrape, I also broke the law twice. What an adventure.

I think we might have a race going here for most accident-prone on the MB.

I hit the top my head on a metal bar at work today.

Re: Randomness

Also I had one of my most embarassing moments today. I was jumpinng of this rock, and there was this guy down there, So I jumped off the rock, and I land right in his lap. On the bright side, he was so cute. My friends and my teacher called it my 8th grade retreat romance.
