I haven't been to a "con" in years. When I was about 15 years old, myself and two good friends of mine attended Star Trek Con '76, which was held at the very snazzy Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto (Patty and I have stayed there a few times, and it is just great).

We had a nitfy time, watching movies, going to panel discussions, meeting "Trek" actors (who were all very nice peeps), and, best of all, getting to hear Harlan Ellison lecture for the first time.

Oh yeah, I also spent a fortune in the dealer's room(s).

I need to go to a "con" again.

Re: Misc Stuff

Harlan Ellison is priceless in person.  He pulls no punches and he's funny as hell.  I love him!  The last con I went too was Vulcon '94.  I was heavy into Next Gen at the time and wanted to write a script for the America's Best competition, so I told myself it was research.  I bought the show's Technical Manual there and it really did help.  But the best part was Patrick Stewart's panel in which he reduced every woman in the room to a puddle on the floor by reciting an erotic poem in THAT VOICE.

Ellison is the man. The last time that I saw him was at a lecture at Ryerson theatre in Toronto on February 8, 1987, a very cold night, indeed. There was a blizzard coming, and, after about three hours of HE, he stopped to let us know that it was snowing madly outside, and that anyone using public transit (like me) had best leave ASAP, or face being trapped in downtown Trawna, in the snow !

I left, grudgingly, and he apparently continued for another hour or two.

Re: Misc Stuff

Wow, this is cool for me.  Lori Petty has directed a movie that she co-wrote with DAG, her dear friend, David Allen Grier.  And it's basically the story of her young life.  It's on DVD and it's now first-up in my Netflix que after I finish with Flight Of The Conchords S2...

The Poker House
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014806/

Minor Chris tie-in... his ex-girldfriend (and Infestation co-star), Di Gaeta is friends with Lori and DAG.

Good God, y'all!  Ghost Town is an amazing movie.  Funny as hell, but I cried like a baby three times.  And I mean I blubbered once so hard I couldn't breathe.  If you haven't seen it, you must.  Tea Leoni is just always so spectacular.  And of course Ricky Gervais has his great shtick.  I just loved it.

Chris's friend, Jon Foster is going to be in the new fall show, Accidentally On Purpose with Jenna Elfman...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441096/

The plot is that an older woman gets pregnant after a one night stand with a young neighbor, decides to keep the baby and the young guy.  And Jon's character turns her life upside down with his stoner buddies.  Um, hello!  Jon, help get your real-life bud cast in a guest role!

David Goyer is exec-producing the best-looking new series of the fall, Flash Forward...  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441135/

He owes us big time for putting us through The Invisible.  Come on, Goyer!  Make it up to us with a juicy, heroic guest-role for Chris.

Re: Misc Stuff

Stunning.  Wow.  That's how I would describe Lori Petty's film, The Poker House.  It's very powerful, cleverly written, beautifully acted (especially by the kids).  And it actually does jibe with her bio, unlike what I feared when I read the plot.  There's a flashback to the part that's on the record.  Lori never talked about this part before.  And I don't think she pulled many punches here.  I also love that her friend David Alan Grier kinda dragged this movie out of her, many years after she first told him the idea of it.  And that her old Booker boss, the great Stephen J. Cannell produced it.  And famed composer, Mike Post (Greatest American Hero, Booker and countless other shows) did the music.  It's so cool when friends help you do something so personal.  And it comes out so perfectly.  I don't know how this heartfelt little film could've been any better.  I was in tears as the credits rolled.  And the connection I have always felt with Lori --- one that pushed me to write script for her that got me an agent for a year and landed me in the top 10% of the Nicholl Fellowship --- has only grown deeper by seeing her make this film.  It's always been a very rough road for her.  But she has survived it.  I'm so proud of her tonight.

sad "deal", I believe you meant. wink

I was sorry to hear that Maura Tierney had bowed out, but I think Helen Hunt is an excellent choice.  Haven't seen nearly enough of her since "Mad About You" went off the air.

Re: Misc Stuff

Darn, this sucks big time. Apparently my favorite theater is planning to move the original versions to such working-citizen friendly times as 2:30 and 5:30 PM, and only on certain days (like Mon and Thu, instead of every day as they showed previously). Great, thanks. That means you're certainly losing me as a customer. I wrote an e-mail to them to ask what those "funny" new times were all about, and they said for cost and efficiency reasons they would rather reserve the popular evening times for movies that draw more visitors to the theater (= dubbed movies).

And I'll bet soon they won't be showing any more OV movies at all because no one goes to see them. Gee, I wonder why that is!

I guess that means I'll now have to watch all my movies at the crappy theater in Cologne that I despise so much. sad (Still better than nothing, of course, so I suppose I should be halfway grateful.)

Re: Misc Stuff

Sorry to hear that. I am quite happy with my little theater. I really like the atmosphere there. I went there to see "Up" on Friday. There were a few women with a couple of kids who wanted to see the movie and when I was about to leave after the movie one of the women asked me if I liked it and she spoke English with me, that was great. LOL I'm currently trying to find a new companion since I lost contact to Katharina a while ago. The only thing that sucks is that I sometimes have to wait ages until they have the movies I want to see. Thank God they'll have Fanboys on Thursday but they still didn't show My Sister's Keeper and I so want to see this movie. But well, I'm gonna wait.

Re: Misc Stuff

I just saw possibly the dumbest movie trailer I've ever seen...  The new one for 2012.  It's one long chase scene, first in a car then in a plane.  John Cusack and family are trying to outrun a literal and linear apocalypse.  Seriously, there is nothing in this trailer but a long, almost-dialog free chase scene with destruction hot on the protagonists' heels.  I remember Siskel & Ebert declaring "outrunning the fireball" a movie cliche at least a couple of decades ago.  Well, these days, the fireball can include rapidly encroaching ice or earthquake collapses that run in conveniently uniform patterns thanks to Roland Emerich.  This trailer is so laughable because at no time do you ever fear Cusack's demise.  It's just feels like a CGI demonstration.

Re: Misc Stuff

Well, hang on now, I'm not writing the movie off.  I just think that the "special preview" they treated us to last night was terrible.  They'll have to come up with a much better one to get me to spend $10.50 to see it in the theater.  But I'm a sucker for disaster flicks so I have no doubt I'll see it eventually, like on DVD or cable.  I've seen all of Emerich's other movies.  Yes, even 10,000 B.C.  And I love Independence Day with a ridiculous passion.  2012 looks like a giant hunk of cheese, but so what?  Still might be fun.  But they need a waaaaaay better trailer.  Trust me, if you saw it, you'd understand what I mean.  Unless you were just so in awe of all the destruction conveniently happening around Cusack & Co but never touching them, that you didn't notice how silly it all looks.
