I haven't read the review, simply because AICN either adores or deeply despises movies, but from what I can gather from Deb's reaction, it seems like I would have to agree with AICN on this one. I went in really wanting to like it. I do enjoy the occasional mindless escapist movie, but this one really failed on all counts.

The second half was almost unbearable. If there hadn't been people sitting in between me and the aisle, I might have left the theater (and that never happens!). Seriously, how much money did they have to offer Cusack to be a part of this pathetic pile of crap? I felt sorry for him to have this listed in his filmography. There was a point in the movie where I tried to determine whether Emmerich wanted to parody himself, but I came to the sad conclusion that the movie was just simply bad. The first movie in years that I regret having spent money on.

Re: Misc Stuff

I knew from the time I saw the 5-minute preview of Cusack running from all the disasters that it was gonna be crap.  And as the early reviews came in specifically talking about how it's a two-hour long chase scene with a hero we couldn't care less about, I knew there was no way I was wasting my time on it.  This summer has really been one for the "mindless escapism" absolutely sucking ass.  No skin off my nose.  I didn't waste money or time on any of them.

Seems Like a better place than where I asked before.  But I went to Fabs Hot dogs which was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. The place was packed. It was really good (and I am usually not a hot dog fan).  My son can't wait to go back and try another one from the show.

Deb,(or anyone else) have you ever been to one of the places? I know that he has been to Atlanta a few times.

Yeah, I've been to Matthews Cafeteria in Tucker, and Marietta Diner.  And there are a bunch of other places I really wanna go that he's been to.  A bunch of local places I like have been TV one way or another.  The Vortex in Little 5 Points was on Man Vs Food.  Williamson Bros. BBQ has been on a couple of shows.  All the hot dog shows mention The Varsity.  I actually took TeeJay there.

Re: Misc Stuff

Nobody's gonna give a crap about this but me.  Back in '92, there was a show called The Heights, about a band made up of cute 20-somethings.  The show was centered around pouty Jamie Walters, who I found boring.  But I already liked Charlotte Ross and Cheryl Pollack from previous work.  But I almost immediately fell in love with Zachary Throne who played Lenny, kinda nebbishy, but adorable and funny.  I have all the eps on tape except the one featuring this song...

The "lost song" that was not on the show's soundtrack, which I have.  This is the only song Zach got to wail on.  And I absolutely love it, hadn't heard it in years.  I was so excited to find it on YouTube.  It just makes me grin...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gFA7RYa … &index=132

Of course the show didn't last, but I've tried to catch everything Zach has been in since.  It's really cool when he gets to play music.  He's so talented.  He played Jim Steinman in the VH1 Meat Loaf movie.  Don't know if any of you know anything about Jim, but he's amazing and Zach did a great job.  I love that movie.

Back in the early 90's, I wrote a part for Zach in the movie I wrote for Lori Petty and Ray Wise.  I also wrote a part in that one for Pamela Segall (Adlon).  Pammy appeared in an ep of The Heights, as Zach's weirdo girlfriend.  I've been thinking about taking a look at that script again, maybe giving it a new edit and shopping it.  It's a good story.  Of course everyone's too old for those parts now.  But it's still a lot of fun for me to revisit how much inspiration I got from these people during that project.

Especially right now, when I desperately need a little bit of sweet distraction for my overtaxed brain.

Re: Misc Stuff

I just need to say it. I officially hate that all but one of my TV shows are taking a one month x-mas break. Why?! Just because it's three weeks before the holidays, people don't stop watching television! Or do they? I sure don't! But, well, I'm probably not representative of the majority of Americans, so I'll just go and quietly whimper in a corner until January 2010... sad

Re: Misc Stuff

Actually, I don't think you're representative of any Americans since you're German.  wink

And let me tell you, most people are on the roads right now, clogging them up and preventing people from being able to get home in a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe the Christmas shopping frenzy is just different in Germany.  Right now, everyone's all wrapped up in the holidays, parties, shopping, traveling, etc.  Very few people are even thinking about TV.  Even addicts like me.  I didn't even remember to set the VCR to record Medium tonight because I'm going to the company holiday party.  Luckily, I'm going home before I go there so I get another chance at it.

Re: Misc Stuff

There is another reason for the December break.  November is a Sweeps Month.  So, the shows all do special, bigger more complicated episodes, and they are usually still working on them til the last minute.  Plus they usually have new episodes every week, which doesn't always happen in now-sweeps months.  So, in order to do this, they basically borrow time from future episodes(that is why there are usually only 1 0r 2 episodes if any in december).  And it takes a month for them to get back into the normal pattern. A similar thing happens in March, after the February sweeps.

Re: Misc Stuff

This is totally random, but I saw a German movie last week in the theater that had full frontal (male) nudity. I mean, you could see his schlong. Multiple times. And it was huge. Now guess what the Germans gave the movie as a rating. R? Nuh-uh. The movie has a "12" certificate, meaning you can see it without guardian if you're 12 and over, and even if you're younger than 12 you can see it with a parent or guardian. Is that twisted or what?

Re: Misc Stuff

It's not twisted.  But it's something that would never happen here.  The Fundies would lose their minds and picket any theaters showing something with full frontal male nudity and anything less than an R rating.  In fact, they'd probably protest it even if it had an R rating, or was NC-17, or even unrated.  It's beyond ridiculous, the puritanical nature of this country.

Re: Misc Stuff

It's mostly European countries which seem happier with nudity. There's quite a few films here in the UK with nudity in, where practically anyone can see it, whatever the age. As long as it's not sexual, then us European see no point in hiding it.

Which I think is the best way to go.  It has always bothered me that nudity is viewed as always prurient here.  Like how everyone lost their minds over Janet Jackson's nipple.  roll

Re: Misc Stuff

I finally watched Marley & Me tonight and it destroyed me.  I have never cried like that at a movie.  It started at about the 90 minute mark.  By the time it was over, I had been heaving, gasping for breath and bawling out loud.  I felt the whole thing.  It was painful, but very cathartic.  I needed that.

I love you, Lacey.  I still miss you every day.

Marley and Me is a great movie. Very sad but realistic. I saw it in theaters with my mom and we both cried. Practically the whole theater cried.

I have yet to see the movie. I think the last movie that destroyed me was My Sister's Keeper because I didn't know the book. But the ending is different anyway. And it reminded me of how friggin' talented Abigail Breslin is.

I was actually more impressed by Sofia Vassilieva than by Abigail Breslin, but they were both great. I haven't seen Marley & Me, and I don't think I'm particularly keen. I don't like either Owen Wilson or Jennifer Aniston.
