And maybe just as an addition to my last post, because the thought just came to me. Have you ever loved a movie so much that you secretly wished you could live in it, be a part of it? Well, Avatar is kinda like that for me. I'm not sure I would really want to live on that planet if someone came up to me tomorrow and asked me if I wanted to fly six years through space to go there, but I think you get the basic idea, right? If we lived in the Star Trek universe and had holodecks, I'd run this movie as a program. Perhaps that explains my fascination a bit more.

Yeah, that definitely helps. I'm not trying to bash your fascination, I guess I just didn't get it. Because like you said, this is odd behavior for you. Not so much for me. I get obsessed with movies all the time. But mostly always for a very predictable and easily explainable reason. Let's take a glance at some of my movie obsessions...
Silence of The Lambs 1991 - I loved the book, I love Jodie Foster, and I love Anthony Hopkins. In my opinion, the movie was brilliant, a damn near perfect adaptation. I think I saw it 7 times in the theater.
A League of Their Own 1992 - at the time I was obsessed with baseball, which you might have to be a long-suffering Braves fan to understand. Since 1991 was their "miracle season", I was eating, sleeping & dreaming baseball at the time. Also, I was already a Lori Petty fan and that movie just broke my obsession wide open (and lead to me writing a script for her that got me an agent and I also managed to get it into her hands). Plus, I've been fascinated with the 1940's all my life. It was just right in my wheelhouse. Add to that the fact that it was a total blast and I kept dragging my friends out to see it, and I ended up seeing it 10 times in theaters.
Contact 1997 - Jodie Foster in the lead, and so many other wonderful actors I already loved got me into the theater. The story was eerily right up my alley so that movie absolutely spun my head around. I saw it three times in three days the weekend it opened with three different friends and had three of the most fascinating conversations of my life. I think I ended up seeing it 7-8 times in theaters. It was pretty to look at, the score was magnificent (still one of my all time faves) and just seeing Jodie play a character that was actually really close to the way she is in real life was irresistible to me.
And the big one...
The Sixth Sense 1999 - the last of the red-hot obsessions. No movie ever grabbed me by the heart and wouldn't let go like that one. I saw it 10 times in theaters, read the script, and the novelization, and the series of kids' novels from Scholastic. I also read well over 100 reviews online. It was the first movie I was able to obsess over on the Internet. Mostly, I was just completely mesmerized by that perfect Haley Osment performance. I even surprised myself with that one by becoming heavily involved in what would become Haley's official website.
No movie has knocked me sideways like that in the decade since. Sure, I've loved a lot of movies and seen them more than once, but not like that. Not as often as I can get to the theater.
So I completely understand movies grabbing you by the jugular and not letting go. I just didn't understand why this particular one has done that to you. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see it happen to someone else, just not you. LOL!

Here's me being all fangirl. I wanted a nice, shiny Windows logon screen for my new laptop, so this is what I came up with. The collage was inspired by someone on LiveJournal who posted something similar which was too small for me to use, so not all credit goes to me for this one.

It's indeed interesting. And he echoes some of what I'm feeling about this movie:
Seeing Avatar was itself like a holiday. It was also a voyage into another world, like nothing I've ever seen on screen in my life. [...] That's all fine and good, but for me this film wasn't about geopolitics or religious squabbling, it was about escaping cold, dreary New Jersey and taking the most immersive journey I've ever experienced in a theater. This movie is narcotic - nearly orgasmic - in its power to bring you into another reality.
I've intentionally been staying away from bad reviews or the mentioned geopolitic or religious squabbling because I know it's just gonna ruin my perception of the movie. And that's just what it is - a movie. Fiction. James Cameron just wanted to tell a story he would have loved to go see on the screen himself. I'm sure he didn't write and make this movie primarily to fuel geologic debates or discussions about racial discrimination and oppression.

Oh yes, he absolutely DID make it to fuel debates. That's what great art does. You should follow the link at the end of Chris's blog to the article about how fundie Christians are lambasting the movie though because the writer takes them to task and shoots all their silly arguements down. I think you'd find that one interesting too.

Author of Chariots of The Gods, Erich von Däniken just posted on his Facebook page...
just saw AVATAR. The most thoughtful, most riveting, most philosophical science-fiction storyline in movie history. Go see it! Dream! MARVEL!
Now that's an endorsement!

If anyone's interested in reading the script, here's a link to it (might be taken down if they discover that it's now floating around the internet): http://www.foxscreenings.com/media/pdf/ … AVATAR.pdf This version of the script isn't the final one, apparently it's from 2007. At a first glance, it appears to be quite close to the final cut, though.

Oh, and Deb? I had to think of you when I watched the movie for the first time. Because there was a definite "bad wig" alert. They put a short hair wig on Sam in some scenes. I mean, like, moderately short hair. I'm guessing his real hair was much shorter than the wig, that's why they had to use it. And I wish they didn't have to, but I also see why it was necessary. I'm also convinced the beard was fake in some scenes. The Colonel's scar could also be made out as fake in some of the close-ups. Details like that can really ruin a scene... I tried not to look at those details on repeat viewings.

So I went to see the movie tonight. I actually liked it pretty much. And I also learned that my eyes don't work with 3D. Good thing I didn't have to pay for the movie since I used my "Pay Seven, get the eighth free" voucher. I just had to spend 1€ for the 3D glasses since they sell them once and you can bring them to your next 3D movie. Just that I won't need them anymore. LOL

Sucks that you didn't get to see the 3D effect, but I hope you were still able to enjoy the movie. Looks like I'm the only one around here going nuts over it, though. Which is okay, tastes differ, otherwise life would be boring.

Yeah, I know. Guess our roles are reversed, I don't have any desire to watch New Moon in the theater again (it's not on in English anymore anyway). I'm not even looking forward to the DVD all that much. I'll probably buy it, but since my new laptop can't play US DVDs, maybe I'll wait for the German one. I surely don't need the 3-disc extra special edition this time.

That's from the script from 2007 that I've posted the link to above. I read it over the weekend. It's great, and there's a lot more deleted scenes in it. The "sex" scene is apparently gonna be on the DVD too. I keep thinking the "bond" would make for a hell of an orgasm. Why don't we have braids with neural link-ups at the end?

Did the fact that I can't see 3D technique let me misinterpret that one scene where they end up kissing somewhere in the woods? Because that "deleted" scene snippet sounds a lot like that to me. And I didn't think it was THAT smutty. Oh well, maybe I'm just weird. LOL
