I know! It was a very exciting night, especially for the Hurt Locker. I was really keeping my fingers crossed for An Education even though I knew it wasn't going to win. For females its an important story and was very subtle. Carrie Mulligan was fabulous too in it. I was glad Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock both won. Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin did a fantastic job.
Here is a list of winners: http://www.imdb.com/
Time to go to bed now!:)

I love my Netflix. It's allowing me to catch up on TV shows I've missed as well as movies. Which is great. Some months I rent 7 or 8 titles.
See, you can't even do that with the one we have. You have to pay by how many DVDs you want to rent at the same time and how many movies in total per month. The cheapest option is two movies a month and only one at a time. It costs 5 EUR a month. The unlimited per month option (but only 2 at a time) is 18 EUR a month. For me it's almost as expensive to rent the DVDs than buy them, and when I buy them I get to keep them.
Did you hear the producer of the Hurt Locker is banned from attending this years academy awards because they strongly urged the baord members of the academy to nominate their film!
Actually, this happened after the nominations. The guy asked the jurors to vote for The Hurt Locker instead of for Avatar. It's only fair that they banned him from the ceremony.
I'm not too bummed Avatar didn't win best movie, I didn't think it would and I also didn't think it deserved it. Cameron may have deserved Best Director, but it's not my place to judge because I haven't seen THL. It's a little disappointing that Avatar only got three awards in the technical categories, but I'm convinced that there's things going on behind the scenes that we'll never know about that influence the end results. Besides, Cameron already won a few Oscars for Titanic, right?

He won a PILE of Oscars for Titanic. You know what might have something to do with it? Some actors do not like the idea of being replaced by computer-generated critters. A bunch of them actually went before Congress several years back asking that there be some kind of regulation on exactly what can be done with CGI. They fear that eventually they'll be obsolete. They also don't like the idea that their images can be used without them even being needed. For instance, there's currently a movie in production that claims it will be a brand new Bruce Lee movie, using a totally CGI Bruce. I'm curious, but also very creeped out by that idea.

As a film student, I hate the idea of CGI. To me, the whole fun of directing is having actors and the whole crew there. Take away the actors, take away a good portion of the crew... all that's left is a few people in a room playing around with computers.

I had to miss the show last night because I didn't make it home in time (had to stay at a friend's place over night) but I watched some clips online earlier today.
I haven't seen The Hurt Locker yet (Just learned that Germany has to wait until August) but I think it's great that a woman won Best Director. It was about time.
I'm not too disappointed that Avatar didn't win that much (I am still not a big fan, but that's not the reason. I just think there are a lot more movies which deserve some awards, too.) I was a little disappointed for Up In The Air, though. But well, haven't seen this movie yet either, so I'm going to wait until I have seen it before I judge it.
And the most funny thing was Ben Stiller dressed as Navi presenting in a category it wasn't even nominated ... thank God I wasn't at my parents's home when I watched that on youtube ... LOL

Just a few points I wanted to make about the Oscars.
Personally, it was quite predictable for me. All the big awards went to those expected.
Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin really surprised me and caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting much from them, but found them together hilarious.
Anyone else felt a bit sorry for the director of the best short documentary, when the producer took to the mic?
and finally, what on earth was Sean Penn talking about in his introduction?

I agree about the predictability.
Steve and Alec were hysterical!
The press is calling that a "Kanye moment", LOL!
Never, ever try to figure out what Sean Penn is saying at any given time. It's just not worth the headache.

This article kind of makes my point about actors not votng for Avatar because they don't consider it to be an "actor's" film...

Check again. That was August 2009. The movie is already out on DVD over here. (And I actually got one of my colleagues who has the German version of netflix to rent it for me. Yay!)

That may be true for the real computer animation, but it kinda pisses me off that people forget Avatar is not a true animated film. It used a lot of motion capture, which the animation is based on. Everything we saw on the screen whenever a blue alien was involved was first performed by a real actor, including the facial expressions. And it wasn't just some stand-in, it was Sam, Sigourney, Zoe and everyone else who played the starring roles. And the actors don't even get any credit for it because most people think it was all created from scratch in a computer. If you compare Avatar to the Pixar films (like Deb's article does), you're comparing apples with oranges.

I fully agree TeeJay. What really winded me up when Beowulf came out was people talking to me about it being an animation. I always corrected them saying it's not an animation, its a motion captured film.

I didn't write the article. I only said it kind of jibed with other stuff I've read over the years about actors being scared that CGI is going to put them out of work.

First, Sean Penn was like that because the teleprompter went out and he had to suddenly adlib.
There is a lot of talk about why people didn't vote for Avatar (all over the press, not just here), why it didn't win more awards, Well, as one of those "technical" guys, The Hurt Locker deserved most of the awards it won. The sound editing and sound mixing was clearly the best of the year. The picture editing was perfect. And the directing was no doubt the deserving winner. If you want to debate what was the best film of the year that is legit, but no one voted for the Hurt Locker in those other categories because they had a problem with Avatar, they just thought the Hurt locker was stronger.
And so you know where I stand on these 2 movies, I have seen them both, and I wouldn't have voted for either in the Best picture category. (I thought Up, District 9, and The Blind Side were better then both). But I would have voted for The Hurt locker in the 4 categories I mentioned above.

There's also just the tiniest bit of backlash in there too, I bet. I read a lot of stuff by pissed off indie types who love to rant about how obscene it is that Hollywood "wastes" so much money creating uber-blockbusters while specialty houses close their doors left and right.

Oh well. I might rent it somewhere. I just need to find a store that rents DVDs. Renningen doesn't seem to be a good place for that.

Love the "Kanye" comment about the director for documentary short. I felt bad for him too!
I'll have to read Alec's blog later. I did think they were a good match together. What did you think about Neil Patrick Harris' opening? Wasn't as good as the emmies, but still love him!
The John Hughes tribute almost made me tear up. Especially when Macaulley Culkin's speech. It seemed from what he said John was more of a father to him than his own parents really. That's what I got anyways.
What about Sandra Bullock's win? I was happy to see that follow through although like I said I was secretly pulling for Carrie Mulligan for An Education even though I knew she wasn't going to get it! All the awards were very predictable indeed.
I thought it interesting when Tom Hanks came out and said that the last time they had 10 movies nominated, Casablanca won best picture. Based on that statement alone it was apparent that Hurt Locker would get best picture.

NPH was OK, not spectacular.
The John Hughes thing has become my favorite part of the show in retrospect.
I was happy for Sandra. And she always gives great speech.
I absolutely expected Jeff Bridges to win and since I adore him, that made me very happy. Wish that movie he's in with Mary Steenburgen and Justin Timberlake would come out already.

I think it's called The Open Road. JT is a minor league baseball player. Mary's his mom and she's sick or dying or something and Jeff is the estranged dad. Somebody else cool is in it too. Kate Mara, maybe? Been a long time. I could look it up, but I'm busy.

I know. I hadn't heard about it before either. But I think it's the same in the US. The movie wasn't advertised at all in Germany. It came and went without being noticed. I'll bet it was only shown in few theaters, and then only one or two weeks.
