Book Thread

We have so many threads about movies, we have a food thread and a music thread. And I just realized we didn't have a book thread yet (or am I missing something here?), so I opened one.

I hope we have some avid readers on our boards here! I have a plan for this year, I want to read as many great novels of classic literature as possible and I started last week with "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck. I'm currently reading it in German (my mom borrowed me her paperback which is more than 40 years old LOL) but I want to try to read it in English afterwards.

So, what is everyone reading at the moment? Want to share? This is the place! smile

Re: Book Thread

This is shocking, coming from me, but I'm actually reading two German books at the moment. Though one is a German translation of a Ukrainian book, called "Picknick auf dem Eis" (Picnic on the Ice). It's a novel about a writer for a newspaper who keeps a penguin as a pet. I know, it's as bizarre as it sounds. A colleague of mine lent it to me. Quite an interesting read, seeing how I'm in Kiev myself right now.

The other book is called "Dem Tod auf der Spur" (roughly translated to: Tracking Down Death) which is a book by a German coroner who describes a few of his most interesting cases. Kinda like non-fictional CSI:. It's quite morbid, but I love it.

I also have the thriller "Brimstone" lying on my bedside table at home, but I haven't had the chance to start reading it yet. It was also lent to me by another colleague. This one is, obviously, in English. (Interestingly, the German title of the book is "Burn Case". Why translate an English title into a different English title???)

Beloved by Toni Morrison

I love Cannery Row and especially the followup novel Sweet Thursday.

They do that sometimes. I really want to know who pays those people for that. roll It's almost as annoying as the stupid German titles they give to Nicholas Sparks novels.

Re: Book Thread

Well, my next book finally arrived today, in perfect condition.  Can't wait to crack the spine on Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  Been waiting for it for 2 weeks. I'll finish up the Carrie Fisher book this week and it's on to Sherman.  So happy!

Re: Book Thread

Erm, I'm currently reciding in the Smut book World, so maybe you don't want me talking my latest reads here. lol
Oh well, just to name a few I've been recommended with: Immortals after dark-series, The Cynster-series, Blackdagger Brotherhood-series, and so on. I've also found many books and series on my own. Way too many for my own good since I can get quite the slow reader in wintertime. Seems like next summer I'll be buying about 20 books. lol.

I'm also listening to the Dresden files- audiobook, btw. I love James Marsters' voice. ♥

Re: Book Thread

You mean Zane as in Zane's Sex Chronicles?  That kind of adult?

Re: Book Thread

I'm now reading the first Mercy Thompson-book "Moon called" by Patricia Briggs. It's really good. It's one of them series with supernatural twists. Werewolves play a big part and think there are vampires later. All shorts of fae. The main character Mercy is a shapeshifter too, or was she calle skinwalker... I'm a bit pissed that they killed of one of my favorite characters in the first book. But there's plenty more to fall for. Read it!

Re: Book Thread

I finally got the Sherman Alexie book I was waiting for, The Asolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian so that's what I'm reading right now.  It's wonderful so far.  It's very funny, but it has already choked me up a couple of times too.

Re: Book Thread

Then you'd love Sherman Alexie's books, Mel.  They're very funny and very emotional.  Have you ever seen the movie Smoke Signals?  It's wonderful and it's based on Sherman's book, The Lone Ranger & Tonto Fistfight In Heaven.  He has these running characters, Victor Joseph & Thomas Builds The Fire who are in a few of his books.  They're the main characters in the movie.  Beautiful Adam Beach played Victor.

Re: Book Thread

I'm betting you'd like it, Mel.  What I love about Sherman's books (and movies) is that they are very contemporary.  He's got another movie called The Business of Fancydancing that I absolutely adore.  It's very odd, more like a cinematic tone poem than a narrative feature.  But it's beautiful and powerful.

Re: Book Thread

I'm taking a break from Steinbeck for now (lol). I recently finished "Love Is A Mixtape" which is a autobiographical book about love, the 90ies and lots of tapes with music. And a few days ago I started reading "Dewey" which tells the story about a famous library cat. Really cute book.

Re: Book Thread

I finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian today and I absolutely loved it.  It's a true gem.  An emotional roller-coaster.  Hilarious and heartbreaking.  And absolutely endearing.  One of the most consistently satisfying, entertaining books I've ever read.  An instant favorite.  Arnold Spirit, Jr is my hero.

It needs to be a movie!

Re: Book Thread

I just re-did the Book sections of my Facebook & MySpace profiles  because I'm SO bored right now ... I finished Water For Elephants yesterday. Great book, it's definitely one of my favorites now but I am trapped at my parents's place until at least Wednesday and I didn't take any other books with me! sad

I miss my bookshelf. I think it's my most favorite furniture. LOL
