Lindsey, when they air LDW, it won't be on IFC exactly. It'll be a new On Demand title that you'll have to buy.  When they did this with American Gun it cost $5.99.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

This is actually showing at a theater near me starting tomorrow.  It is showing once a day (at noon).  I might be able to go on monday (my wife and son are out of town, so I am alone with my 14 year old daughter and there is NO WAY I am taking her to this).  But when she is at school on Monday maybe.  I'll let you know.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

That's a good sign.  Maybe it'll play a wee bit wider than we expected, a wee bit sooner.  I have no idea what to expect from it really.  Please do let us know what you think.  And hey, if they have any promos, little posters or anything, please snag a few for us.  Sometimes they do for smaller films at arty theaters...

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Saw the movie today.  First a few things of interest.  I don't think this one week run means anything about its wider long term release.  The theater I saw it at is at the extreme west end of the Valley, and it wasn't advertised at all (I only knew about it because I went to see Secret of Kells in that theater last thursday).  And it is only playing for one showing a day at noon.  And there were only 6 of us in the theater.  Also, it is scheduled to open at the Hollywood and Santa Monica theaters of this chain in the 3rd week of July.  So, I have no idea why it was playing this week, but I don't think it means anything.  Also, sorry to say there wasn't any of the stuff (handouts etc) they usually have for their movies, another sign this was not a normal run.

As to Chris.  First his hair looks a little better in the movie than in that one shot it the trailer (he is wearing a yarmulke in the scene so it is effecting his hair).  But I am not sure you will be happy with the sceencap possibilities.  If you have seen Happiness and as you will see in this movie before Chris shows up, The filmmakers are not trying to make the people look good.  Not only are they barely wearing any makeup, they are in fact highlighting their weaknesses.  So there are a lot of wrinkles in this film and in Chris's case a lot of acne. He does have a couple of brief scenes out side of the big confrontation scene, but not much. Other than a picture on a wall, he isn't in the first hour of the movie.

As to his performance.  He is really excellent.  The scene could have easily been over the top, but the low key nature of it is really strong.  So, he is playing several emotions at once (and none of them are anger), and it is what makes the scene work.  It is also nice because his performance doesn't feel like anything else I have seen him do.  You get to see some more of his range, and that is definately worthwhile.

As to the movie, I liked it more than Happiness, but it still had some of the same problems for me.  I think it is better because Todd Solondz has grown up some since he made Happiness.  It is not just shock for shock's sake, he tries to make it about more, and that is it's strength.  Unfortunately there is still a fair amount of the pointless "shocking" stuff, and that is it's weakness.  They are saying it is a stand alone sequel(that you don't have to see Happiness to follow it) and I guess it is possible to follow it without having seen Happiness.  But a lot of the scenes directly refer to scenes from the first movie, and some jokes  and drama won't make sense without seeing the first movie.  So, if you plan on seeing this, you should probably see Happiness first (but don't blame me please).

Overall, If you are a die-hard Chris fan, you should see it, it is a worthy performance, and it doesn't feel like you have seen him go there before.  And if you are a casual fan, it is probably still worth it, afterall the movie is only 90 minutes long so how bad can it be.

Excellent, Rick.  Thank you so much for your thoughts.  I'm encouraged about the movie, if not the release.  But hey, July's a little better than August.  smile

Aw, bummer.  She's very cute in the trailer.  How's Mr. Reubens?  Chris's mom said he and Chris became really good friends after meeting on the shoot.

He is very good, and he has a part which was probably fun to play.  Although for me it is always hard to forget his alter ego.

And you have seen most of ally's part.

Thanks, Rick, you paint an interesting picture. I will definitely check out LDW, even though I wasn't all that impressed with Happiness.

Yeah, it's hard to forget Peewee.  Especially since Paul insists on dragging him out of mothballs every once in a while.  But I've seen him in a couple of things where he was really good dramatically.  Glad he had a fun part in this one.

Limited release in no theaters near us, Mel.  But it will run on Comcast On Demand simultaneously, for a price.  So I WILL get us a copy, don't worry.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Looks like LDW comes out on DVD in the UK on 12th July 2010: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/14895674 … oduct.html I pre-ordered it, so I'll probably have it by end of July.

There's also more info about the movie (including a pressbook in PDF) on the Artificial Eye website: http://www.artificial-eye.com/film.php? … ingwartime It has a list of UK theaters where it's currently showing. Nothing much about Chris, though.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Well, since I will probably only be able to get it on VHS, maybe DVR if I'm very, very lucky, maybe you can take a crack at converting it?  If you have time and it'll convert that is...

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

The theatrical/On Demand release is on July 23rd, which means the US DVD probably won't come out till about September.  I guess I can either wait that long, or just try to find someone to record it off On Demand for me like I planned.  So be it.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

You can order it amazon.co.uk too, but I don't think they do PayPal either, do they? Maybe you'll be able to get on ebay too when it gets closer to the release date. Besides, don't always whine right away, check out your options. I'm sure there's gonna be a place in the UK that's gonna sell the DVD where you can pay with PayPal, once the movie is out. Check this, for instance: https://www.paypal-offers.co.uk/ Select "Books, movies and music" from the drop-down list next to "Top Deals" and it'll show you online stores where you can pay with PayPal.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

See, I have this new Blu-ray player, which you can connect to the internet. And it offers several online services, like YouTube, but also watching the latest movie trailers through something called LoveFilm (which is like Netflix). And I was scrolling through them, watching a few, and then I saw Life During Wartime on there. I watched it again, but it was just the same one we've already seen. The one that shows Chris for about two seconds. Still nice to see it being advertised. smile
