CBS Developing Exorcism-Themed Drama
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
August 16, 2006CBS has given a put pilot commitment to an exorcism-themed drama from "Joan of Arcadia" creator Barbara Hall and producer Joe Roth (The Exorcist III), says The Hollywood Reporter. Details of the project, from CBS Paramount Network Television and studio-based Joe Roth Television, are still sketchy, but it is understood to revolve around exorcists and others who investigate supernatural phenomena.
Hall, who is under an overall deal at CBS Par TV, is writing the script and is executive producing the project with Roth. Bob Larson, an expert on cults, the occult and supernatural phenomena, is consulting on the project. Joe Roth TV president Nina Lederman is serving as co-executive producer. Roth is not a stranger to the subject of exorcism, having executive produced the 1990 feature film "The Exorcist III."
Hm... not sure what to think about that.

I can't take stuff like that. I won't watch unless they assemble an amazing cast or something. We probably won't see it till season after next because all that first sentence means is that they are producing a pilot. Doesn't mean it'll get picked up. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Can't say I'm excited about it.

Doesn't sound interesting to me. I've seen so much TV shows with supernatural phenomna, like JoA, Medium, Buffy, Angel (and, I admit it: GW) ... I don't think I need a new show. Plus I don't like the Exorcist movies. Never watched them and will never do that.

I hate exocrist type stuff and stigmata and all that demon-related blather. But I will say this; Exorcist III, which Joe Roth produced really drew me in. It's mostly about this guy --- who may or may not be possesed --- who's killing priests. It features a knock-out performace by Brad Douriff as the killer. I've seen Brad turn in some spectacular work before, like in the classic X Files ep, Beyond The Sea. But his turn in E III was just stunning.
I'm a little annoyed at the overkill of supernatural stuff appearing on TV these days too. Or weary may be a better word. Because there's so much of it, none of it is very good.

Haha, I forgot X files. I used to watch the show a lot, but I stopped watching it after Mulder was gone. Yeah, I hate that overkill, too. It seems like the broadcast stations are copying each other and the more a project gets copied, the worse gets the idea.

Yep, I quit watching XF when it was ruined by losing Mulder too. And you're right about the copy-catting nature of network TV. Look at last year when ABC had Invasion, CBS had Threshold & NBC had Surface. All about aliens coming out of the water. Blatantly obvious copy-catting. Like that crap show on CBS that shall remain nameless that's a rip off of Medium. Makes me sick. But there's very little original thought in Hollywood. This we know.

Well, I can't say this new thing she has planned blows my socks off either. It doesn't sound like something I'd want to download and check, unless someone tells me it's really good and I should give it a try. Oh, and gee.... Deb, when I'm over at your place, all the TV shows will come back on, right? Usually end of September/beginning of October, isn't it? I think we have our nights well planned out then. (Then again, I can always watch them when I'm back home.)

I hope so! Please remember your poor friend in Germany who waits for <shhh> copies!

Yes, a lot of the new and returning shows will be back when you're here. Some won't. Like 24, for instance, will not be back till about November most likely because of the baseball playoffs being on Fox. The only new show I'm even remotely interested in so far is Jericho, and that's only because Skeet Ulrich and Sprague Grayden are in it. I should know fairly soon exactly what shows are premiering on what dates. TV Guide's Fall Preview and Returning Favorites issues will be out in a couple of weeks.

Oh Man. I wish we could have American Television here. Or at least the undubbed version of all the shows. The dubbing is so unnecessary and SILLY!!! Why, oh WHY can't we have the original voices with subtitles like all the other countries? But nooo, in Germany everything must be dubbed!

Someone posted this on the amtam forums. It's from Barbara Hall's blog. (No, wait, she says she doesn't blog. Hmmmm.)
March 09, 2007
Hi and Welcome to my Blog
I don't blog. It's always frightened me as I have no reason to believe the random thoughts in my head are fit for public consumption, let alone a source of entertainment. But I keep running into curiosity about my latest project, "Demons," as well as some lingering questions regarding the fate of "Joan of Arcadia." So I decided it was time.First of all, "Joan." I'm as sorry as anyone that it's no longer on the air. I'm happy to say both seasons are on DVD complete with bonus material. Everyone in my life got that for Christmas. So I urge you to check it out. It's not the same as a third season but it's a nice parting gift.
The idea of Joan continuing somewhere down the line is unlikely but not impossible. As the physicist Michael Faraday said, "Nothing is too wonderful to be true." As broadband content development continues at an impressive pace, I can't swear that someone (myself, perhaps?) wouldn't be tempted to put together another version. Reunions are mostly impossible, as the cast have all gone off to work on other projects. But perhaps with some creative thinking and persuasion, we could find a prequel or a sequel or a parallel universe and keep going with the original idea.
Or perhaps "Demons" will be the third season of Joan. What it would have been. We left Joan in an interesting place; after two years of chatting with the Divine, she was about to go head to head with the Not So Much. That is, a dark entity, employee of the other side, portrayed by Wentworth Miller. Of course, he had to go off to prison so that didn't come to pass. But it would have been a fun chess match between two entirely different kinds of warriors.
I personally think no other TV show will ever replace JoA. At least for me. It was a gem among a lot of Crap TV.

OK, BH is nuts. We don't want another version or a parallel universe, dummy! It's about THOSE characters, played by THOSE actors. Anything else, well, I couldn't give a crap.

So basically she's saying that there will be no TV movie or anything else to wrap JoA up, at least not with the same actors and the same characters. Not that I had any hopes of that ever happening, seeing how all the actors are involved in other projects now and it would be quite a feat to get them all back at the same time for something like that. What I can still see happening is BH writing a novel that might explain what she had in mind for s3. No ties to actors having to be available that way. But since she didn't even mention that, I guess we're not gonna see that either.
As to Demons... I can't say I'm very enthused. Not that I've really done any research, but I think I read some preliminary info a while ago, and it already didn't sound that great back then.

Whether I watch Demons or not depends entirely on casting. Any word on that yet?
