I will post the complete list as soon as I can find it. There weren't a lot of surprises. I'm really excited for James Franco. That's about all I can say right now.

I watched the announcement live earlier. Some categories really offer hard decisions! But I think I'll be hoping for Colin Firth this year, sorry.

I haven't been keeping up with ANY movies this year...only really what I have been hearing on this board and through other friends. The one thing about traveling is its very easy to lose track of these types of things. Although alot of the time the "best" movies arent my favourites anyway

May I just add one thing: While I still think The Social Network is a good movie, it's not exactly Oscar material (at least to me), I was still surprised that Andrew Garfield got snubbed for his performance. He should have been nominated, too. That's the one person I would have given the oscar to for that movie. Nothing against Eisenberg, I really like him, but not in that movie.

See this movie I want to see now, not so much because I think it will be a good movie but more because I feel left out that I havent seen it yet!

So far I have seen Inception and The Social Network, tonight I'm going to see Black Swan finally and in February I'm definitely going to see The King's Speech. It opens here just 10 days before the Big Show (aka The Oscars, LOL), so I hope I'll get to see it before that. And it bugs me that I have to wait until April for 127 hours, but that's Germany. You always have to wait ages for the good stuff. So I really hope my little OV theatre will have it. It's always a bit of a surprise if they will have a movie or not.

I've only seen Inception and 127 Hours so far. No idea when I'll get to see the others. I'm not even remotely interested in Black Swan or Toy Story 3, but I hope to see the rest of the Best Picture nominees at some point down the line.

I've seen most of the best pictures except for Toy Story 3, Winters Bone and The Kids are Allright. Black Swan is good, really disturbing, not for the faint of heart, but Natalie's performance is truly amazing.

Dude! It's almost 3am here and I'm still wide awake because of the movie! It seriously blew me away! Natalie Portman was AWESOME!!! I could hardly believe it was the same actress I knew from all those kid movies she used to make. Like the one where she played that pregnant teenager, whatwasthenameagain ... Where The Heart Is. And Anywhere But Here, of course. Oh, and I just found out she was in Cold Mountain, too. It's not that long that I watched that movie but somehow I must have totally missed her. LOL Not to forget Garden State. Loved her in that one. But Black Swan is just ... Wow. If she doesn't win the Oscar for that, then I don't know.

Lol, apparently I am about ten years old because the only movies I've seen of any movies anywhere in the nominations are Toy Story 3, How to Train your Dragon and Tangled. Though I think I get an excuse for Toy Story 3 since the first two movies were a part of my childhood.

The Best Actors' race looks really interesting. I think the voters tend to vote for the American contestants whenever possible. But I'd be shocked if either James Franco or Jesse Eisenberg won, since they're so young and don't have the tremendous "body of work" that academy voters seem to prefer. Jeff Bridges could pull it out two years in a row, which hasn't happened since Tom Hanks won for "Philadelphia" (1994) and the for "Forrest Gump" (1995) the following year. Though I love Jeff Bridges, I'd kind of like to see us be less xenophobic for a change and go with Colin Firth.

I don't see any way it could go other than Firth. And that's great.

Yeah, it would be great. But I still remember Robert Duvall winning for "Tender Mercies" when the other 4 nominees were British. And I don't know very many people who saw "Tender Mercies". And no one who managed to sit through it twice.
Offline
I think that was one of those "body of work" Oscars though. Which could very well be the case with Firth this year. And the buzz about that movie is just so HUGE. It swept the nominations. I just don't see any way for him to lose, really. I think Geoffrey Rush will win too. His only competition is Christian Bale and I think at this point, Bale should just be honored to be nominated and to have won the Globe. I predict a King's Speech rout, with whatever awards it does not win going to The Social Network.

Yeah, it was the case with Winslet last year. But I adored "Reuben, Reuben" and have watched it many times. And I had yet to be able to sit through "Tender Mercies" or that one where Duvall killed Farrah. The "Godfather" saga was great and everything, but enough already! I just looked it up: Duvall's opponents that year were Tom Conti, Tom Courtenay, Albert Finney, and Michael Caine. If anybody had a "body of work" award coming that year, it was Caine! Duvall got it because he's from here. Which stinks.

There was one year when it was all international winners: Marion Coutillard, Tilda Swinton, Penelope Cruz, I think two or three years ago. I think Firth is the strongest candidate. It was nice to recognize James and Jesse.

Well, of course, that year, I would've loved it of Tom Conti won. I adore that guy. I mean he's like one of my all time favorite actors. There are movies of his that I've seen ten times. Remember that time he and Margaret Colin were in a TV show together? They had great chemistry. In fact, it's funny you should mention him, I've been thinking a lot lately about Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. I need to put it in my Netflix queue. Totally weird, but really compelling movie and he's just priceless in it. Well, like he always is. That man just twinkles.

Yeah, he's adorable. He's not tall, has a big nose and a weak chin. But somehow he makes it work for him.

But he does have beautiful thick black hair and amazing eyes.

Yeah, he's pretty smashing all right. And he was hilarious as Ross's f-i-l on "Friends". Did you ever see him in a movie where he was this Italian guy who had a fishing boat and he got involved with this British woman on vacation? I can't find it on IMDb, but I saw it once and loved it.
EDIT: Never mind! "Shirley Valentine"! How could I forget that one. I loved it! Even more than "American Dreamer".

OMG! Yes! That's Shirley Valentine. Except he was Greek. It was set on Mykonos, I believe. That was my beloved Pauline Collins (from Upstairs, Downstairs) in that film. I absolutely adore it! I've probably seen it 25 times by now. I wish they'd put it on DVD already. I have it on VHS of course, and I have the soundtack on cassette, LOL!
Remember how he promised "I will no try to make foak with you. Foak is foak and boat is boat." HAHA!

Oh, I love American Dreamer as well. My favorite though, is a very obscure little film, shot in Italy, called Saving Grace. He plays the pope in that one. A pope who feels he has lost touch with the common people and forgotten how to just be a priest. He slips out of the Vatican and ends up in a broken-down little village where the people have absolutely no hope, and gets to work. He was brilliant and it's just a beautiful, sweet little film.

So I saw 127 hours today, then I'm going to see The King's Speech on Thursday with my mom and on Saturday I'll see True Grit - finally! That way I watched all the Oscar-relevant movies I wanted to see just in time for the actual show! Great, huh?
