Re: Book Thread

So I usually read one hard book, that's more intellectual, on the weekends to stay focused and one easier book to read during the week when i'm too tired to focuse like that.  My hard book right now I'm reading is A.S. Byatt's The Children's book.  It is truly amazing and definately reaching up to my top five favorite books of all times.  Just is a long read and needs lots of to finish those.  They are hillarious, witty, and just a fun read.  They are as good as the movie was.  A little different here and there  (from the movie) but enjoyable too.  I definately want to read more from this genre.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Re: Book Thread

Just finished 'The Shinning.' Excellent Read.  Onto 'Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.' I'm always a bit late with the popular ones.

Re: Book Thread

I'm at the end of Carol Burnett's This Time Together (a gift from my friend, Elaine).  All that's left is the Carrie stuff.  And I know it's gonna destroy me.  I kinda need to be in the right mood.  Next up after that is either Markos Moulitsas's American Taliban (a gift from our friend, Shell) or Whitley' Strieber's Omega Point (another gift from my friend Elaine).  Last read is My Stolen Son: The True Story Behind Alpha Dog by Susan Markowitz.

Re: Book Thread

Hahaha speaking of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo....I have finished it myself not too long ago and onto the second, Girl who played with Fire. Hope you enjoy the read. I thought it was excellent, but a little too much background at the start for my liking. Takes a while to get into the meaty part of the story

Completely agree Kate about the beginning.  I read for a good hour or so at Barnes and Nobles yesterday and had issues focusing a bit because I wasn't anticipating so much background.  After about 50 pages in I'm finally introduced to Lisbet.

Hope the story on Alpha Dog is interesting Deb.

Re: Book Thread

It's also a very fast, easy read.  One of those book you could finish in a weekend.  And it will stick in your mind afterward.

Re: Book Thread

I've been thinking I'll read those books when I get enough courage to read a whole book in swedish. Every finn learns it in school. every finn learns to hate it. but I still understand quite a lot of it. if I read books in swedish I might get as good as I am in english. or am I? The point is, I've been thinking I'd like to read books in the original language they were written. I've heard a lot of things about these books, and would like to treat them with proper respect. plus, I saw a document about the author couple of months ago and it was really the first time i really paid attention to anything about him. very interesting story.

What comes to what I've read lately... I bought Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver and Linger in finnish for my niece, and decided to read them. I was very surprised with the quality of the translation. exceptionally great. I read them in english last fall/winter. I meant to reread them soon anyways, since the third book Forever is coming out soon big_smile

Re: Book Thread

I'm reading Kill Your Friends now ... and WOW, all I can say is: Yes, it is a hooligan of a book, just like it says on the back of my copy. LOL
And I'm totally failing my book project, half the year is over and I am at least six books behind ... I need to read faster! yikes

Re: Book Thread

"Sixguns and Society" it was required reading for a westerns class I took, it was about how western movies reflected changes in society.

"International Spy Museum's guide to Practical Spying"  it was a gift when family visited the Spy Museum in Washington DC.

Probably 2 of the less strange ones on the list....I hope.

Re: Book Thread

Thanks Deb for this link, I think that is the most hilarious website I have ever seen.

I had a few good laughs here.
Electricity in Gynecology ... WTF???
How to disappear completely and never be found - Yeah, I should definitely read that one. LOL
How to Be Happy Though Married - Should I give that book to my brother who recently married?

Also, I wasn't aware that it is possible to understand women through their cats and that you can teach Physics to your dog. lol

But I think the weirdest book on that page is "A Lust for Window Sills". EXCUSE ME???

Re: Book Thread

I know!  It's awesome.  Did anyone notice that How To Be Happy Though Married was written by Tim LaHey?  He's one of the guys who wrote the Left Behind books.  So weird!

Re: Book Thread

Loved reading Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Gonna wait I think 6 months to pick up the next one.  I picked up 'Hunchback of Notre Dame" for my fun read.  I like to go to a classic after a couple of new current ones.  Then i signed up for this class that will discuss and read 'Purgatorio' from Dante's Divine Comedies.
