Breaking In (Adam F. Goldberg's new show)

Okay, so I wrote an impromptu review:

TV Show: Breaking In

This new FOX TV show hit the air in April 2011, and I must admit that I only gave it a shot because of Adam F. Goldberg, the show's co-creator and writer. Why is that? Well, he co-wrote one of my all time favorite Chris Marquette movies, Fanboys. I also had the chance to briefly meet him in person in October 2006, which is kind of a long story.

When I watched the pilot, I didn't know much about the show other than the basic premise. I always try not to get spoiled too much on the details before I watch a movie or a TV show, so that's a good thing. But I gotta say that at first I thought something along the lines, "Please, not another show about criminals helping to uphold the law." Because we already have White Collar and Breakout Kings.

Having now seen all four episodes that have aired to date, it's safe to assume that I like the show. A pilot can be tricky to pull off, because you want to introduce and establish the tone of the show, the setting, the characters, the premise, the works. And at the same time tell a story and make sure your viewers get hooked enough to tune in again next week. And I'd say Breaking In pulled that off beautifully.

So, what is the basic premise? Let me see. We've got this guy, Oz, who runs Contra Security, a firm that specializes in security matters. What they actually do is hire people with certain skill sets that break into your home/museum/building/etc. to see just how secure (or not) it is. The show is basically Oz and his team cracking a new job each episode. And since they're all pretty quirky, hilarity ensues along the way.

Next to Oz, the team consists of Cameron Price (slickest hacker on the west coast), Melanie Garcia (first rate lock picker, safe cracker and surveillance expert), Josh Armstrong (master of disguise) and Cash (the gadget man). There's other, minor characters, like Creepy Carol (I'm guessing she's some kind of office assistant) or Dutch, Melanie's douche-dorky boyfriend. And they're all wonderfully nerdy, quirky and laugh-out-loud funny.

Now, let's look at some more of the specifics as to what I liked in the pilot episode:

- The Star Wars Han Solo/Wookiee Dragon Con scene made me laugh out loud.
- Chocolate bar consensual sex dialogue - plastered a huge grin on my face.
- Cpt. Kirk chair – hilarious!
- Pranks on the new guy: Awww, poor Cameron.
- Cool matchbox house. I want one!
- I like the gritty feel of the "office". Kind of a ramshackle place, but it has character.
- Is it wrong that Bret Harrison reminds me of Hugh Grant (you know, visually)?
- And, whoa, Christian Slater? I guess it's been too long since I watched anything he was in, because I only realized it was him when seeing the title theme to the second episode. Yeah, uhm, I suck...

Favorite Quotes:
- "You have us all here in your douchicle."
- "Don't call me, I'll be multi-assing."
- "Hey, you look smart. Can I have some urine?"

I didn't take notes when I watched episodes 1x02 and 1x03, but I did for episode 1x04. And I think you can only really appreciate the importance of it when you know that Adam F. Goldberg is a huge Star Wars fan (and co-wrote a movie about it — c.f. Fanboys).

So here's a few brief thoughts about episode 1x04 "White on White on White":

- After the first scene, I immediately thought: FANBOYS! (Which is probably wrong because I should have thought: STAR WARS!) I actually said out loud, laughing: "Oh, no way!!"
- Guys, you spelled Wookiee wrong!
- I love Cash's wookiee sound.
- Why is Dutch wearing two watches?
- Cash's 'I love you' blurt to Anna Ang made me chuckle out loud.
- "No touchy, Dutchie." – LOL!

In summary, I love the tone of the show. The dialogue is great, witty, funny. I'm not usually into shows that are mainly or largely comedy, but I love the mix of this. It's definitely a keeper on my to-watch list, and I really hope it's gonna be renewed for a second season. (Crossing my fingers for you, Adam!)

And can I just say... the FOX official site for the show pretty much [high pitched Cash voice] suuuuucks! They don't even have all the cast and characters listed.

Deb, I'll be sending it to Adam too. I friended him on Facebook, so no need to share with him. smile

I'm a little hooked myself. Dutch is my favourite....he is just so perfectly wrong. Played amazingly! And he is definitely the butt of enough jokes and create enough jokes to laugh at him that i dont think the show would be the same without him. Michael Rosenbaum knocks it out of the park!!

Re: Breaking In (Adam F. Goldberg's new show)

The writing is great. The lines crack me up every time. There has not been one episode where there wasn't something that literally made me laugh out loud. And that rarely happens with me. I bow to Adam G. and his talented team. Can't wait to watch yesterday's episode! (That said, I loved last week's Breakout Kings ep too, especially the emotional Lloyd moment at the end.)

Re: Breaking In (Adam F. Goldberg's new show)

Adam says that they are still fighting for the show and not to count them out just yet.  Fingers, toes & eyes crossed.  It's truly one of the funniest comedies I've seen in years and the cast could not be more perfect.  It would be terrible if Fox didn't give it a better chance.

Re: Breaking In (Adam F. Goldberg's new show)

OMG!  Check it out, you guys!  In a stunning turn of events, Fox has decided to bring back Breaking In for at least 13 more eps.  And they're buying another Adam F. Goldberg show as well...

Will watch it in a few minutes. Breakout Kings (with Brooke Nevin) also came back with season 2 on Sunday.

Re: Breaking In (Adam F. Goldberg's new show)

I loved Jason Behr in it. And it sounds like he might be back at some point. God, I miss seeing him on TV. Have you already heard anything about the ending of the episode? Cause if not, I'm not gonna spoil.
