Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

To bring Amy in was Deb's idea, but I thought it was cute. The Alpha Dog thing was my idea. What do you mean "mixing fiction and reality"? Anything that we make happen in our fiction is reality. I thought it was a cool in-joke. And if we wouldn't mix fiction and reality, then nothing that happened in real life must be used in our story. Then all the movies we'd use and the songs and bands we'd mention had to be something that didn't really exist. But I know what you mean. It's kinda like Will Girardi once suggested the Girardi family watch The Godfather (as Joe Mantegna is in one of the Godfather movies). smile

Also, I never watched Judging Amy (except for that one Chris episode), so I didn't know about the teaching-in-prison thing. That was entirely my idea for our story (it was inspired by the Dispatch song "Time Served"), and it was completely independent from what was once used in Judging Amy. I swear!

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

I can't explain what I mean, that's why I wrote "mixing reality and fiction". Because Chris played Keith and Adam in reality. I mean, JoA is fiction of course, but in reality he is the actor of both Adam and Keith. Huh, complicated! LOL Of course it's a cool in-joke but I don't like to relate it too much with "you-know-what". (I can't say that loud in public. wink )

I know you never watched Judging Amy, but I did, that's why I assumed that Amy was Deb's idea and it just reminded me of the episode with Vincent teaching those prison kids. It's just a nice little coincidence. So you could have worked as a writer for Judging Amy too. LOL wink

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

I don't even know if Deb knows that Amy's brother taught in prison since I don't know if she's seen every episode. But Deb never mentioned that to me, so I don't think the idea to bring Amy in was really related to that episode. But I guess Deb should speak for herself here.

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

I saw every ep of JA.  It was one of my favorite shows at the time and Vincent was actually my favorite character.  But I didn't remember --- still don't, in fact --- that he taught writing to kids in prison.  Was that before he left the show, or when he briefly came back?  He wasn't a regular in the last few seasons (kinda like Chris in Strong Med) and I don't really remember many of his storylines, to be honest.  It was soooooo long ago.  And I didn't watch those shows over and over so I can't possibly remember 6 years worth of plots.  Bottom line, we didn't steal it.  And it was a coincidence that we brought in Judge Amy Gray.  We needed a juvy judge and I thought it would make a cute in-joke since Chris once stood before her in an ep of her show.

For the record, even if we did steal it, so what?  This is fan fiction.  Borrowing from other shows is part of the game.  People do it all the time.  Right, TeeJay?  You can't take this stuff so seriously.  We do it for fun.  Nobody's trying to sell it as literature.

As far as the AD thing, I thought it was brilliant.  It's a very snakey in-joke.  Only Chris fans are going to get it at all.  It was our way of working out our attraction to Keith while staying loyal to our love for Adam.

I know we went a little crazy with the references in this one but that's one reason this very long, difficult to write chapter was still such a kick for me.  I won't apologize for it.  To be honest, I bet there's a few references in there that you haven't even picked up on just yet.  There are a few you haven't mentioned.  Heck, with this chapter, it might be fun to play a little game of Spot-The-In-Joke/Reference.  LOL!

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

I wasn't apologizing for anything. I'm very proud of this chapter and I think it turned out great. I had so many problems with it at first, but once we worked on it collaboratively, it got so much better and better. And, yes, we do it for fun. And fun we had, lots of it!

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

I never said you have to apologize for anything. I was just telling my opinion. You don't have to like it. But Tina asked, so I answered as good as I can. This is a very long story and there are a lot of moments I really like, so please allow me to have a few moments I don't like too. You once said I should have my own opinion. There it is.

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

Well, it kinda felt like it. It's just that Butterflies is a part of my JoA Bubble and sometimes it's ... I don't know how to exlain it ... it's complicated when there is too much of real life in there. Do you understand?

I thought with the Judging Amy thing that I was blending two Barbara Hall universes.  Seemed like a natural.

Hey, no one said you can't share your opinion. That's what the board's here for. And I'm totally fine with you not liking every little thing I (we) write. That's only natural. I was interested in exactly what you didn't like, and that's totally okay with me.

The thing is, it wasn't about the Judging Amy thing. That was the thing I liked (although I've seen the prison thing a few times now). The thing I didn't like so much was the thing with Alpha Dog. Because that's not part of my JoA bubble, if you know what I mean. And you brought it into a connection that I didn't really wanted it connected with. If you know what I mean ...

Sorry.  I think it's really cute and funny and I was thrilled to get to drool over Keith a little bit and still be able to keep it about Adam.

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

Deb, I found this on dnalal's LiveJournal. Very cool!

Butterflies by TJ-TeeJay and Sisterdebmac: The death of Adam's father prompts him to show up on Joan's doorstep in his time of need, paving the way for reconnection. This is set in the future when Adam and Joan are both 22. It is a really beautiful, really realistic story which shares the good times and bad of a relationship that was meant to be. It's not complete, but for the most part it's not cliff hanger'y so you can read however much or little as you like. Also, if you interested, there is a R-rated version with additional sex scenes, however I read the 'censored' version and you don't miss anything that way smile

I've been thinking pretty much exclusively about a chapter several down the road, codenamed, TBT that TeeJay and I are currently writing.  This is the pic I'm fixated on...
