Cool. I also edited my post above and added a link to a rant I did a few months ago about why people talk during movies.
Well, I won't say I told you so. Oooops, guess I did.
![]()
I guess I have to join in on that. The main thrust of my review was also the overuse of the FX to the point that the movie wasn't quite a live action flick, not quite an animated cartoon, but more like an animated film with some people tossed into it. I think TeeJay's review essentially echoed mine.
Sensory overload was the bottom line of my review.
...So what the Mach 5 raced in the movie is more closely what happened in the cartoon. I wonder if they came up with the Mach 6 just do to those crazy type of tracks
And some bad news for Illinois, I guess. FWIW the Mach 5 is used in basically the same types of races as the Mach 6 in the film. I guess they just don't show that in the trailers and clips. While the Mach 6, which replaces the Mach 5 later in the film, is used in action sequences which "up the ante," so to speak, there are races with the Mach 5 which are similarly advanced and unconventional.

Finally, back to the film, I don't think I'm posting spoilers in this next paragraph -- just in case, you may want to skip it if you haven't seen the film.
I can only remember two things from the film, one funny and one poignant. The only funny moment I remember is when the kid ends up bloated and sprawled on the floor surrounded by candy. The only moving moment I remember is when Speed confronts Racer X about who he really is.
Well...no guarantee Mike will be there, though. He only has a very small part and he's been getting some good roles. Nothing I can talk about, yet, but if things go the way they're going I imagine he'll be shooting then.
I'm really kicking myself for not going. I backed out at the last minute. Of course, afterwards I find out who was there besides the cast (Emile, for example) and at the afterparty (David Archuleta, of all people).
Still catching up from being away and just read the recent posts here. I think you are all correct to a certain extent about why the film didn't do as well as many had hoped. But I think that Sisterdebmac was most on the mark insofar as the reviews being so negative.
Despite the fact that you guys may not be swayed by reviews, the fact is that many people are. The majority of the public don't follow these movies the way we do.
When and why people choose what to see is easily measured by polling. It is often dependent on age.
When people are asked when they decided what to see on any given weekend the overwhelming majority said it was within a few days beforehand. Remember, now, we're talking about the majority, not the fanboys/girls like us who might follow a film's progress and decide to see it years in advance.
When asked how they decided, most cite TV commercials and trailers more than anything else. But the older the decisionmaker (adults in a family, let's say) the less likely they are to rely on marketing and the more on what they read in their local papers. Most people read one review -- whomever is their local favorite. That very often helps them make that decision. The higher the percentage of reviews that are negative the more it will impact on decisionmakers' choices.
By the way, all this applies only to opening weekends, generally. How a film does beyond that is mostly based on buzz and word of mouth (co-workers, friends, and relatives).
Just to followup on the discussion earlier about cast interviews -- MTV did, indeed, interview Michael. It will be featured in the next "Twilight Tuesday." Look for it here:
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they submitted it to Toronto and, the way things are going, have a good chance of getting in. Just a guess. ![]()

Enjoy! ![]()
I got some from the red carpet but they are basically the same as everyone else's so I don't post those. These are exclusive.
Here's one just for you guys. ![]()
Enjoyed your review, Larry. Huffington post today has links to a bunch of terrible reviews. I was tempted to read them, but since I'm gonna see the film, I thought I'd go in fairly optimistic and hope people were being too harsh. You make me feel like I'll still find a way to enjoy it. Dave will kill me if I back out of seeing it now.
Thanks so much. I appreciate it. I haven't read any of the reviews but the audience was very positive. Of course, they were all industry people and guests of Warner Bros. The public was not invited, although WB did hand out free tickets outside in order to fill the seats. So it was not an unbiased crowd. Nobody paid either. I'm not sure if it would be worth the money for a night out at the movies.
I really only went out of loyalty to Emile and because I was covering the event for the festival. I was just glad I got to see him, chat for a bit, and get some pictures. As far as I know, I was the only photographer who shot the cast and crew onstage for the intro and I hope to have those posted soon. I've just been swamped with work.
As far as I can see from the trailers there are 3 Mach cars.
1. A Red Mach 4
2. The more famous white Mach 5 (kind of looks like a 1950's car with fins)
3. The more advanced white Mach 6OK, what is the deal with the Mach 4 and who drives it?
How much is the Mach 5 in the film?
Same thing for the Mach 6.
I'll do the best I can without posting spoilers -- I think the plot points I mention are all common knowledge or are known right from the start of the film.
The red Mach 4 is driven by Rex Racer. Speed drives the white Mach 5 until, at some point, it is destroyed and when they rebuild it they name it 6.
The Mach 5 is the car featured throughout most of the film. However, Rex's "ghost" and "ghost car" ride with Speed in much of the film so that you see both the red Mach 4 and white Mach 5 parallel to each other in many races.
Are the races hard to follow at times? In general are the races shown close up or so far away that the cars are too small to make out and follow who is who?
YES, they are hard to follow much of the time. That was my #1 main problem with the film (as well as most of the people I know who've seen it). The races are shown both too close up and too far away to really figure out who is whom and where they are in the race. It's just a complete mess. But maybe I'm just too old. I had no clue what was going on in most of the races.
In the cartoon there was many car crashes that resulted in obvious deaths, does that happen as well in the film.
Yes and no. There are many car crashes but nobody dies -- it's very cleaned up Disney-style. People magically emerge alive no matter how bad the crashes are.
And one last question, do they use the original theme song from the cartoon in the film at all, if so did they change it at all to "update" it?
Yes, they very very cleverly insert a bit of it. It almost goes by unnoticed unless you know the theme, and it brought a big smile to my face. That was actually one of my favorite things about the film.
Michael Welch and Sean Marquette's American Son has been selected for Film Independent's Los Angeles Film Festival, June 19-29 in Westwood Village.
Here's a link to Larry-411's review.
http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/story102425.html
If Larry reads this I have a question.
Larry, did you watch the original 1967 Speed Racer cartoon and how does the movie compare to the cartoon it's based on. Is it faithful to it?
Thanks so much for posting the link. It is much appreciated.
I did watch the original cartoon but I honestly don't remember much about it. I was a wee wittle baby. From what I can recall the original was very much in the Japanese anime tradition of sharp lines and fast action. In that sense, yes, it holds true to it.
As far as the storyline goes, I honestly have no recollection at all of any of the story from the original. I can only remember the look and the theme song.
Sorry, wish I could be of more help. :embarrassed:
Not sure if this has been posted:
Chris Marquette seems to be having so much fun that we want to follow him everywhere he goes..."I got to work with my brother [Sean Marquette] and that was cool. He called me, I had some free time. I met with Jess, she was awesome, and we did it". Chris, who is real-life older brother to Sean, got to play the older brother on celluloid as well. It was a smart decision as their chemistry is fun, light and obvious.
She has almost no control over anything that's going on.
That's par for the course.
She also might known and just have not had time to post everything Summit gives her right away, she's writing three books right now and a stay-at-home mom to three boys who she describes as "chimpanzees on crack". Busy woman, she is.
She wanted to post the names as soon as she could. She'd been waiting for approval. She posted them as soon as she got it.
And the full cast and the partial cast we knew about are very different. Characters I thought were written out are safe.
Summit told her she could not post a partial list. They did not want any list posted by her until all the names were official. That's why she said they had finally given her the approval.
Very cool that in her newest post yesterday she has a picture of herself with six people, and her arm is around Michael. :applause: Very nice.
What's amazing is that Summit only just gave her permission to post the cast list this past Saturday. And she's the writer. I posted about Michael over two months ago and she couldn't mention him until now.
And Doug Smith, who's actually one of only two actors prominently featured on the cover, which makes it really odd.
I think all anybody needed on this one was one look at Amber Heard. WOW!
All the boys love Amber Heard.
(If only Senator could see that)
I can't believe the huge number of pics that turned up from the event. I thought it would be really low-key. Apparently not. Cool!
Here's the formula to get a lot of media and press coverage: cast a slew of beautiful young women, all of whom have a decent fan base of sorts, and be sure to include someone who stars in a hot CW show like Gossip Girl. It helps if there are a bunch of good-looking young guys with decent fan bases as well, although not required. But they should be encouraged to bring beautiful young dates.
Oh, and it doesn't matter how bad the reviews are. ![]()
I've been lurking here  but enjoying the convo. I see TeeJay caught the IMDb post.
To answer Deb, no, Mike couldn't make it. He has been shooting Twilight up in Portland and had other commitments for that day which he couldn't get out of.
One reason Emile went is because he actually had four former co-stars there: Amber Heard (Alpha Dog), Melonie Diaz (Lords of Dogtown), John Robinson (Lords of Dogtown), and, of course, Chris (Alpha Dog, The Girl Next Door). There might even be more that I can't think of right now.
As you know, many of those actors have worked with each other on other projects as well. For example, Doug Smith and Alexa Vega were in Sleepover, Melonie and Mike are in American Son, and, of course, you all know the connections between Chris, Aaron, Sean, and Mike.
Six degrees of...
I was supposed to go but backed out when Mike did, although I had some moles there. ![]()
