We had freezing rain go through last night, roads are terrible.

This is the first time I've ever heard of this happening. The entire town of Lemont, IL. is closed due to the icy roads. For those that don't know, Lemont is a town on a large hill, which on the north side is a river. So because the bridges are iced up and of course the roads are as well, there is no way to safely drive in or out of that town right now.

Walmart has a new $5 display of Paramount & Warner Bros. dvds.

I picked up this one today.

According to the dvdtalk forum some Walmarts have the 2 disc edition of Zodiac in the $5 display, but all they had in the display at my WM was the Full Screen and Widescreen editions. So I didn't buy that one.

I don't remember the early 1970's TV series that much, but I remember the 90's version quite well. Gee that jeep got great gas mileage and their batteries lasted forever.

Major water main break in Montgomery County Bethesda, Maryland.

They're rescuing people from their cars right now. They were doing it via helicopter, but now by boat.

They said a 4 to 5 foot wall of water came down the street. Right now it looks like the cars are in the middle of the rapids.

#432 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 23 Dec 08 :: 14:42

It's a heat wave, right now it's 18 degrees. That's 3 times warmer then it was last night.

Of course the trade off is even more snow.

#433 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 22 Dec 08 :: 19:15

Yeah, it's above zero. 1 above to be exact.

I think the Weather Channel said that Wisconsin has something like 31 inches of snow so far and I think it's their 6 snowiest December on record.

#434 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 22 Dec 08 :: 16:42

So yesterday's high here was around -2. This morning it went down to -3 and expecting a high of 10 above.

We had a Wind Chill Warning yesterday because of the cold temps and winds of up to 50 MPH. Still under a Wind Chill Advisory this morning.

At least today is the last brutally cold day and we could be in the 40's by the end of the week with rain. I can't wait till it warms up.

#435 Re: All About Chris » All you IMDb jerks out there » 22 Dec 08 :: 16:38

What do you think are the average age of an IMDB poster?

My guesses:
Real age: Early 20's
Mental age/ What age they act like: 12

#436 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 20 Dec 08 :: 17:52

Gee it's going to get very, very cold here tomorrow.

Tonight it's going down to 2 above zero with wind chills around -20. Sunday's high is only going to be 3 above, with wind chills around -20 to -25.

This came out of nowhere. A few days ago it was going to be in the teens to near 20 for Sunday & Monday and then this dramatic change.

I found a webcam for a nearby suburb that gives a good idea of how quickly this hit. Lemont is SE of here.

So the storm went through over-night.

Seems like the worst is over now.
Basically got about 3 inches of new snow with a covering of freezing rain on top.
When shoveling it's like big chunks, kind of like if you broke a Hershey bar with a hammer.

The side streets around here aren't even plowed yet. When I was outside I saw one driver just spinning their wheels trying to get onto the main road. Luckily I live on the main road, so it's much better since they always plow and salt it first.

Down south they got about 1/2" to 3/4" of freezing rain, so it must be fairly bad down there.
Like I posted above we got some freezing rain here as well. Earlier this morning we got round of sleet going through and it sounded like someone throwing thousands of pebbles against the window.

On the news they said that out in the Western suburbs there was Thunder-Snow plus small hail.

Right now it's stopped for awhile, but another batch of just snow is expected to come through in a few hours to add another 2 to 4 inches of snow.

I posted the news in the Star Trek post, but thought I'd post a separate one as well.

"FIRST LADY OF STAR TREK" MAJEL BARRETT RODDENBERRY
PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 76

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 18, 2008) – Actress Majel Barrett Roddenberry, beloved star of sci-fi phenomenon Star Trek passed away early this morning surrounded by family and friends. Roddenberry was 76 years old. She began her acting career in the 1950's with roles in such popular shows as "Leave it to Beaver," "Bonanza" and "The Lucy Show; but it was her numerous roles in the legendary Star Trek franchise that fans came to know and love her. Roddenberry had featured roles in almost every Star Trek television and film entity and became an iconic figure within the fan community. Her roles included Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: The Original Series, Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every incarnation of the series. However, it was the love affair between her and the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry that earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." Over the course of their more then quarter-century love affair, she became not only Gene's partner, but also his creative muse. Roddenberry helped Gene expand the Star Trek universe and was an integral part of its continued legacy after his death.  Majel recently completed reprising her role as the voice of the USS Enterprise for J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek film.

Roddenberry succumbed to a short battle with Leukemia at 12:27 AM on December 18 in her Bel-Air home. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her son Rod Roddenberry and family friends. She is survived by her only son Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry Jr. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the CARE Organization or Precious Paws both of which share Roddenberry's love for animals and dedication to animal rescue.

Sad news.

From her official site.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry passed away this morning, December 18, 2008, at 12:27 AM in her Bel Air home. She died peacefully, in her sleep, and was surrounded by family and loved ones.

"My mother truly acknowledged and appreciated the fact that Star Trek fans played a vital role in keeping the Roddenberry dream alive for the past 42 years. It was her love for the fans, and their love in return, that kept her going for so long after my father passed away." - Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr.

I hope she was able to complete her voice work for the film. Kind of fitting how perhaps her last role will have been Star Trek.

Kind of funny that they closed the schools for under 4 inches of snow. Around here that's nothing. But I guess to them it must be a snow storm.

One of the reports I saw said that the kids were making snow angels and snowmen. Now I can believe snow angels. But snowmen? What are they making, miniature snowmen?

I saw a video on tv where motorist were trying to go up a hill, and it was icy, so they all slid back down. Kind of funny watching some of them almost making it, to only slide all the way back down. Luckily no accidents though from what I saw in the video.

#445 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 18 Dec 08 :: 22:10

The worst lunchmeat from the deli has to be Scott Peterson.

I once bought a pound of Scott Peterson Roast Beef from the deli. It looked really good. Once I got it home I opened it up. The meat felt like rubber. It didn't taste like regular roast beef, it tasted more like flavored meat product. Just really bad brand in my opinion.

I'll stick with the other brands from the deli, like Sara Lee and others.

Even though the nipples on the Batsuit was stupid, at least they didn't put a VPL on the cod-piece.

#447 Re: Square Eyes » The Dark Knight (SPOILERS!) » 18 Dec 08 :: 20:25

comingsoon.net has already posted that this is nothing more than an untrue rumor.
So no need to worry.

The UK tabloids strike again. One, who shall remain unnamed, is claiming that Eddie Murphy is playing The Riddler in the next Batman movie, that Shia LaBeouf will play Robin and that Rachel Weisz is up for the role of Catwoman. Not only that, but the tabloid says the movie will come out in 2010, and that the movie "will end on a cliffhanger over whether Batman survives a blast at Wayne Towers."

All of the above is, of course, not true. Moving on...

#448 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 18 Dec 08 :: 15:18

I guess this is good news.

Well, somewhat anyways.

We're now under a Winter Storm Warning for this afternoon into Friday morning.

Now they're saying 6 to 12 inches of snow, with the higher amounts towards the Wisconsin/Illinois border..
Here will be 6 inches or less.

Mid-Illinois is under a Ice Storm Warning. That's the good news - that the ice went downstate and not here.
Even though it's no fun driving in that much snow, at least it's easier than driving on ice. At least you can get some traction on snow.
