I think there is a lot of elements affecting this. But the main ones are money. With DVD sales down, the studios are more likely to release things which will have no extra costs to release (all rights secured) or things which are still very popular because they see them as low risk. there is also a current trend of contractually obligated dvd releases. (a show I did last year called "the Middleman" which got terrible ratings, yet the executive producer knew there would be a DVD release and we made some stuff for it during production, and now the dvd is out). If they have to put out a certain number because of contracts, that leaves even less room for other older ones.
Understand, I would love to see a Wonder years set as well as some of the others you are all talking about, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
You can probably give up on The Wonder Years. The producers were clueless about music rights when they made it. They didn't even get permanent tv rights for the songs. They had to replace the joe cocker song from the opening credits for TV broadcasts after 10 years. So, they definately don't have DVD rights for any of the songs. And the cost to buy the rights or replace the songs is so high I don't think they will risk it.
There is something I hadn't really thought about, but this is the only thing I can think of where he was THE lead, except maybe the Tic Code. Fanboys was a buddy film with a few leads, and everything else I have seen I would have to describe him as some degree of supporting character, sometimes very important characters like in JOA but there was always someone else who I would call the lead.
And that being said, He really pulled off a lead.
I did the Pilot for the new series "Mercy" and in theory I will be doing the series (but I never assume I am working on anything until it actually starts. I am also currently doing a animated series for Jim Henson Prods. called "Dinosaur Train" No interesting stories recently. And I can't talk about what will be in upcoming shows until they air. And remember, this is my job, I can't post the bad stuff about people who I may need to work for in the future, so I usually only will say the good stuff. For example, Bill Pullman was an excellent director, and a very good guy to work for, and I wish he would direct again.
And Annie Potts is the most normal celebrity I have ever met. She is talented easy to work with and seems like just another person which is very very rare in an actor or actress.
thanks, sounds like your weather is very similar to here in LA. Most of July was in the 100s (38c I think) here.
Just curious because I have always wanted to visit Australia (I may have said that before).
I started in animation, and the work has continued to come there. I have always enjoyed it, but animation work doesn't get the respect it deserves, so I have always tried to do a variety of things. And in the end, I do the jobs I get, if you know what I mean.
On big features there will be numerous mixes for different release mediums. A friend of mine who works on huge features (he has done a bunch of Bruckheimer's movies), once spent 2 to 3 months doing the various versions of the mixes of National treasure 2. So, yes, there is often a DVD mix. There is always a TV mix, and a Foreign mix (called a M & E, for music and effects) which is used for the dubbed versions.
The various versions (other than the M & E) aren't hugely different from the theatrical versions, they are just adjusted so that they will play better on home systems. If you want me to give you more detail I will, but I think it may be getting boring already.
Kate,
How cold is cold there in Melbourne. Here in Los Angeles if it gets into the high 30 F everyone says how cold it is. But that would be a very warm winter day in a lot of the US.
The sound system wasn't the problem. And FYI when a film is mixed, there is always a TV mix done, in which any sounds which are only in the surrounds, are mixed into the front middle to avoid just such a problem.
The only possible reason for the absence other than it being a creative mistake, is that the BG buzzing was mixed so low, that you can only hear in in a theater(which would also be a mistake) or that the sound was either too high or too low a fequency for home speakers. If they did that (and didn't have any mid range) than I would say that maybe it wasn't a mistake but it probably wasn't a good idea.
Yeah, that is probably the answer, but that is why is is supposed to be a creative job. If you make it a clear buzz it can get really annoying. That is why I would have created something more along the lines of cicadas. They can be constant and not annoying (as long as it isn't too loud), and yet clearly insect sounding. The point is, they should have been creative enough to solve the problem.
One more thing on the sound..at the end they open the window and say listen, ans chris says "no buzzing". And I said, "So what, there never was any buzzing" The sound designer should have had a sound of the bugs which went through out, in order for that line to make sense. Sorry to vent, but this is the kind of wasted oportunity which drives me nuts. (you should hear me talk bout some of the big features every year)
Just saw it, (3 hours behind here on the left coast). It was a lot of fun. definately worth a watch. The ending is the ending. It is a modern spin on the classic 50s monster movie where the would end with something like "The End?" Those movies always suggested that it wasn't over, and this is a different way of doing the same thing.
My one problem is a personal rant of mine. Why was the sound so useless. why do these small movies always hire hacks with experience to do their sound. This movie could have sounded really cool, and added a lot (imagine if the climax location had sounded creepy and alive instead of sounding like an empty office building). but instead of hiring someone who wants to do something great, they always panic and go with someone who has experience doing small features. (and there is a reason they are still doing low budget features)
All other aspects were really great. Actually I think this is one of my favorites of Chris's credits.
I saw the DVD, and I enjoyed it. Partly I'm sure because it did a nice job of capturing the feeling of those fun dumb disney movies of my childhood. Chris was part of the strange/interesting casting in this movie. The main government badguy is a complete cardboard villian played by a guy who often plays cardboard villians. Yet his henchmen are more fun and 3 dementional and played by more serious actors tom Everett Scott and Chris.
Also loved Kim Richards' cameo
Carol, your post made me think of something. Since the cheating has always felt like something the show was forced to do. Maybe the writers made Bonnie an artist, and gave them somethings in common so that it wouldn't appear like Adam was just using her like a hole in the ground. Maybe they were trying to save some dignity for Adam.
Didn't work, but maybe that's what they were doing.
As to Adam in Independence Day and Shadows and light, I didn't like the way he was in Independence day (again felt like writers not character) but it wasn't too far off and it could fall within the 17 year old wiring thing so for me it was still okay. And as too the lying and wanting to be alone, that could have been completely okay. It depended on what he wanted to be alone about. If he had been examining his feelings about Joan, and realized how important she was to him, and thereby grew closer, we would all be talking about what a great thing that was. But what it turned out to be is what is wrong.
I think they were still within the character (if barely) until trial and error.
even though I hated the last few episodes I still have some thoughts. I don't think Ryan cared about Adam, I think he wanted Joan and he saw her weak point as being Adam, so he was going to use him to try to get Joan.
I think if there had been more seasons, then Joan and Adam would hve got back together (because it is TV and that is they way they do things.) But I don't think it would have been real. Trial and Error was the begining of JOA becoming just another TV show. Adam cheated because writers and executives thought he should for ratings, not because his character would have. JOA was unique because they built real characters and had them behave according to their natures. That is rare on TV. I have often wished there were more episodes of JOA, but I have also wondered if I would still love the show if there had been. They were starting to do damage to the show, and I am suspicious they might have destroyed it to save it.
So did I
I did look it up and it was called....uh..."Noah"
Yeah, I saw it in a theater too. It was on cable a while ago, and I watched part of it. It may be even worse than I remembered it. and that is saying something.
