Wait... there's no way we're gonna get to see the real version? :crying::fedup::witsend:

Well, the fight's not over yet. But damn near. It does not look good for our sweet little movie. Maybe we'll get to see it on DVD someday...

Oh, man... the people at the Fanboys myspace are in for a huge, huge blow. They have no idea what's happening. Or at least they seem not to. *shakes head* I don't have the heart to tell them.
I really hate the Weinstein Co website for not having contact info.
I'm gonna end up making myself sick(er) because of this crap. Good night.

The people from the MySpace Fanboys page don't really care enough. I've e-mailed them with tons of links to cool Fanboys stuff, like Kyle interviews and shit. They didn't put any of that up. I e-mailed them to tell them their page is basically unviewable in Firefox. They didn't care. No one ever answered my messages and their page is still unviewable in Firefox. So screw them. I just think it's a shame because Kyle kept promoting their shitty little site. I just wish people would know where to go for info on the movie. They'll go there and hope for the latest news. Which they're not gonna get...
I love that pic of Chris/Linus. Right on, Deb!

That's who I was talking about. I know the people who run it are a bunch of jackasses, but the people who go there are still hoping for the movie that's been promoted to them for over two years.

Ernie Cline posted this on his website:
First, let me give you a brief history of Fanboys…
I've been a Star Wars fanboy my entire life, since my first viewing of Episode IV at the tender age of five. As I grew older, my love of (and obsession with) the saga only increased. So when, after fifteen long years, the news hit that George Lucas had finally begun pre-production on a new Star Wars trilogy, I collapsed into spasms of pure geek joy. I couldn't wait. I had never wanted to see a movie so badly in my entire life. (And, let's be honest here, gang. I wasn't alone).
I became addicted to prequel spoilers and fan websites. My anticipation started to resemble a kind of unbridled hysteria. So much so that, at one point, a troubling thought crossed my mind: What if I die in some unforeseen accident before Episode I comes out and I never actually get to see it?
That unsettling question gave me an idea. An idea for a movie…
In the fall of 1998, at the height of Star Wars prequelmania, I wrote Fanboys, a screenplay about a group of movie geeks who set out on a mission to break in to Skywalker Ranch, in an attempt to honor their dying friend's wish to see Episode I six months before its theatrical release.
Inspired by indie filmmakers like Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, and Kevin Smith, I decided to try and make Fanboys myself, on a shoestring budget. The problem was, I didn't have a shoestring budget. I was flat broke. All I had was my script, a 1978 Ford Econoline van, a borrowed digital video camera, and an excess of enthusiasm. Everything I knew about making movies came from reading books and listening to director commentary tracks. I was just a film geek, not a filmmaker. But that didn't stop me from trying to make the movie anyway.
I began to enlist the help of fellow Star Wars fans in and around Austin. We held a benefit to raise money for the film. I cast a bunch of local actors and started scouting locations. But that initial production began to implode before we even started filming, due primarily to my complete and total lack of money, resources, and practical knowledge of how to actually make a movie. It quickly became obvious that the flick was too ambitious for me to make it on my own. I needed help. And lots of money.
That's when the first in a long series of insanely cool things happened.
Harry Knowles posted a glowing review of my script on his Ain't It Cool News website, comparing it to Stand By Me and American Graffiti. He proclaimed it the "best script abouts geeks ever written."Harry's review set off a domino effect that changed everything. My floundering no-budget dream project about obsessive Star Wars fans suddenly began to garner loads of local and national media coverage.
As a result, the script was eventually optioned. Then the project found an incredibly talented director. After a few more years of rewrites and development, Kevin Spacey (Kaiser Soze!) became one of the producers. And a Tony award winning actor named Dan Fogler signed on to play one of the leading roles.
Then, in October 2005, seven years after I'd written the first draft of the script, Fanboys sold to the Weinstein Company. And that's when things started to get really nuts…
Four more of the most talented young actors in Hollywood (Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel, Chris Marquette and Sam Huntington) joined the cast.
Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia!), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian!), Ray Park (Darth Maul!) and William Katt (The Greatest American Hero!) all agreed to play roles in the film.
My favorite rock band of all-time, Rush, agreed to contribute four of their songs to the soundtrack.
Ex-Devo frontman and geek icon Mark Mothersbaugh was hired to write the musical score.
And, perhaps the most stunning news of all, George Lucas decided to give Fanboys his blessing. He even agreed to let us shoot at Skywalker Ranch.
Filming began in February of 2006 and principal photography wrapped the following April (lots more to come on that, I promise). I even got to play a small role in the movie, as a Star Trek fanboy. And one of my scenes was with William Shatner.
Maybe now you can understand why I've spent the past few years geeking out… to a degree that can't even really be measured with existing technology.
Fans got their first sneak preview of Fanboys in May of 2007, at the 30th Anniversary Star Wars Celebration in Los Angeles. We showed about 45 minutes of the movie (still a work-in-progress) and it brought the house down.
This past July, an entire rough cut of Fanboys was screened at Celebration Europe in London, and the fans gave it multiple standing ovations. (Here is one fan's review of the rough cut screening. And here's a short camera phone video of the crowd's reaction.)
But the production of Fanboys has also run into its share of hiccups. There have been several rounds of reshoots and delays. And this week, rumors have begun to fly across the Interweb about the possibility of big changes being made to the movie in post-production. And the fans who have been anxiously waiting to see it for so long are understandably concerned. Some of these rumors are true, some are false, and others are just plain loco. Nothing is set in stone at this point, so I can't weigh in on the subject just yet. What I can tell you is that everyone who has worked on Fanboys is extremely proud of it, and we can't wait for it to arrive in theaters. When it does, I know that our target audience is going to love it.Of course, the big question is "When the hell is coming out?"
We originally hoped to release the movie in early 2007. Then late 2007. Then the release date was bumped once again, to this Friday, January 18th, 2008. I'm sad to report that it won't be coming out this Friday, either. Now we're hearing that the current plan is to release Fanboys this coming March. But that could change again. To quote Master Yoda, "Always in motion is the future." I promise to keep you posted.
But I'm not gonna leave you hangin' until March. From now up until Fanboys is released, I'll be using this blog to post a barrage of journal entries, photos, links, news articles, and video clips that detail the long, strange saga of Fanboys journey to the big screen. So if you're interested in hearing what it has been like for me, one of the world's biggest movie geeks, to have to the opportunity to geek out on the set of his very own Star Wars movie, please stay tuned. It's a crazy tale. And it's still unfolding…

Ernie

There is hope. I don't think Kyle's going down without a fight.
I just posted this on our front page:
The Skinny On Fanboys
Some people might be wondering what's going on with Fanboys, seeing how the movie was promoted as coming out on Jan 18, 2008 for a while. Now, before you go looking for local showtimes, the movie wasn't released on Jan 18.
There is no new release date yet, though the word is that it'll start showing nationwide on US screens in March or April this year. While that is reasonably good news, other things are going on that do not seem to bode well for the movie.
The original storyline was that a group of Star Wars fans travels across country to break into Skywalker Ranch so that one of their own can see Episode I. He has cancer and would not live to see it when it is released in theaters. That's the movie that Ernie Cline and Adam Goldberg wrote and that Kyle Newman shot. However, for some strange reason, The Powers That Be have taken over and reshot a lot of footage to remove the whole cancer storyline from the movie. Now, the whole break-in ploy plays like a whimsical stunt.
Fact is that there were test screenings in Burbank, CA last week. Both versions of the movie were shown (to different teenage audiences) to see which version would rate better. And from the looks of it, I'd say there wasn't an overwhelming outcry to go with the cancer storyline rather than the cancer-free one. Which is just very sad.
We here at chris-marquette.com have been following the movie for close to two years now. We've been in touch with the director and other people involved. This movie is very dear to us because we believed in it being a refreshing comedy that still had a wonderful emotional core. A movie that would make you laugh and possibly also cry. Now our hearts are bleeding at what they're apparently planning to do. We'll continue to follow what's going on very closely, so stay tuned for the latest. If you wanna know more, check the Fanboys thread on the Message Board because that's where all the brand-spanking new developments will be.
Last but not least, Ernest Cline (the original author of Fanboys) has just posted a blog about his thoughts on the movie and recent developments. You can read it here: www.ernestcline.com/blog

Guys, you know what? In the first and only trailer we have so far, never once is the fact shown/mentioned that Linus is sick or that they take the trip so that he can see the movie before he dies. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Is that just a coincidence? Or were they already plotting all this way back then?

I asked Kyle about that on the panel at FX, remember? He said that the Weinsteins always wanted a "comedy" trailer. They always thought the comedic aspect would sell better than the emotional side of the story. So yeah, Fat Bastard probably was planning on raping Linus's journey all along.
