Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Your tastes certainly are eclectic, illinoisguy!  I love your choices.  Since one of your faves is one of the best parodys I've ever seen, "Airplane!", I was wondering if you liked the original, "Airport"?  This is one of those movies that, even though I have it on DVD, I still watch it everytime it's on TV.

You only mention one BTTF, but I think the first sequel might be my favorite of the three.

You're a true movie buff.  When asked for your five favorites, you just managed to keep it under thirty!  Wonderful selections.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I remember the Airport movies. I really remember the one where the small plane hits the cockpit and the flight attendant has to fly the plane. I also remember the one where the plane is submerged.

I need to buy the Airport: Terminal Pack.

I like the entire BTTF trilogy. Something I noticed along time ago, in BTTF3 when the Delorean is getting pushed by the train engine, that when the one of the logs blows and the Delorean does a wheelie that if you look closely that Marty has disappeared from the car. My guess would be that it would have been too dangerous to have anyone in the car in case something went wrong and it got hit by the train or something.

I like the flying train at the end of 3, but I was always wondering why the train that hit the Delorean earlier never applied the brakes and when Marty and the girl went back that there were no authorities on the scene. Surely if this happened in the real world that the police, fire department and the news crew would be on the scene.

I always wished they made more. They easily could have had a grown-up Marty go on an adventure and perhaps pass the torch on to his kids or perhaps Doc's kids.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Oh, yeah, I loved BTTF III!  And the love story between Doc and Clara was so sweet.

As for the "Airport" sequels, yikes well some (ALL) of them were just awful.  The Clarleton Heston/Karen Black one was absolute dreck.  This one also had the great Gloria Swanson as one of the passengers (and playing herself roll).  The only good thing about this one was the parody they did on the Carol Burnett Show.  In it they had Norma Desmond (Burnett's spoof of one of Swanson's most famous character's, Nora Desmond from "Sunset Boulevard") as a passenger.  As Desmond was talking to someone, the flight attendent's voice can be heard describing the fiight's dinner choices then, in a calm voice, "Oh and, by the way, our plane is about to fly into the side of a mountain in Utah."  the elderly Ms. Desmond is excited by this news, "Utah?  I wonder if Brigham Young still remembers me."

It's terrible that, after the stunningly horrible "Airport '75", the greedy SOBs went back to the well twice more.  "Airport '79" starred, among others, John Davidson, Jimmie Walker, and Charo!  Thankfully this swill finally killed the franchise!:applause:

So maybe it's not such a bad thing that there were only three "Back to the Future"s.;)

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I thought all but the first Airport movie was crap.  And I've always had a weird affection for "disaster" movies.  Even the junky ones where you could tell everything was models.  Can you say, "Flood!"?  I'm looking at you Irwin Allen!

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Oh, yeah!  A really bad disaster flick can be one of the most hilarious things in the world.  I remember a movie about Killer Bees.  Sorry, can't remember the title tongue, cuz I know you'll all want to rush right out and get yourselves a copy.  And, sadly, there were quite a few Killer Bee epics.  In this one, the bees are about the bring down a large passenger jet.  In a droning monotone the pilot looks out the window and says, "Bees, bees.  Millions of bees."

What was so sad about the "Airport" sequels was the great people who appeared in them.  I can't describe how sad it was to see Jack Lemmon and James Stewart appearing in "Airport '77".  sad  I guess Charo was busy.

You know what they've been running on cable lately?  "Food Of The Gods".  Giant chicken, rats & wasps in that one.  As well as a stellar performance by the great Marjoe Gortner!  Can't believe I sat through that crap in the theater twice when I was a kid.  Same goes for "Bug!", with Bradford Dillman.

Alligator! yes!  That was your urban legend of flushing the alligator down the toilet come to life--I remember seeing all these back in the early eighties, lol. Back when the "Sunday Night Movie" was a big deal on public TV.

Sure that's the right amount of esses?  wink

I thought the raining frogs scene in "Magnolia" was disgusting (not to mention incomprehensible) enough.  I don't think I'd wanna see 90 minutes of frogsfrogsfrogs. :puke:

Wait a minute?  Dirk Benedict?  The guy from "The A Team"?   "Ssssssssssssssssssss" may have been the finest movie he ever made.  :silly:

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

You really don't.  Unless you stumble across the PBS fable, Frogs, with Scott Grimes, Paul Williams, Shelly Duvall and Elliot Gould.  That one is wonderful.  And a sequel to Frog.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I remember Ultraman. Wasn't that the one where the guy would grow to Godzilla size and battle other big bad guys. He had a time limit of power and when he was running low he would get very weak. I don't recall that he had any weapons except I think he would put his hands together and a powerful beam would come out and zap the bad guy. Most of the time it was them fighting hand to hand.

It was like a weekly Godzilla film on tv.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I remember seeing "Beginning of the End" on the Late Late Late Show when I was a kid.  Hysterically bad.  I"m not sure about "Empire of the Ants" in particular, but before "Dynasty" Joan Collins' career had really fallen on hard times.  She did quite a few of those schlocky horror movies and other really bad stuff.  Anybody remember "The Stud" or "The Bitch"?  Worse than anything Angie Dickinson ever made.  And THAT'S saying something.

Her lowest point may have been fifth or sixth billing in a crappy made-for-television remake of "The Big Sleep", which was a Bogie/Bacall movie from the 40s.

We had those two JC movies in the adult section at Movie Stop back in the 80's.  I never saw them.  Were they really adult section material?  Hey, bet you didn't know that Cameron MItchell of all people once made a porno...
