Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

MORE AD GOOD NEWS STRAIGHT FROM NICK CASSAVETES:

1) Alpha Dog's tracking is going to well that Universal has now expanded it into 1600 theatres.

2) The documentary of the making of the film turned out "even better than the movie" and it will be on the DVD.  Nick says it has tons of great behind the scenes footage.  (Drooling yet?)

Drooling very heavily. Hope Chris is gonna be in it enough. The extra footage, I mean. But it'll still be interesting even if he isn't.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Here's an Alpha Dog foreign language teaser.  Italian maybe?  Anyway, you can catch a real quick clip of Chris crying in there if you know where to look.  When you see a girl in a green shirt on top of Emile, freeze frame and go back just a little before that.  It's really short but it's there.  And I mean he's balling.  Waaaaaaaa!

It's about the 24th second...

I found a Swiss website that I think has some AD stills I've not seen before (i.e. Anton in boxers on the stairs). There no new Chris stuff there, though:

PS: Posted this on the IMDb AD board too.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Oh, and in case this is of interest to anyone, in Germany Alpha Dog is being distributed by Concorde Filmverleih.

Looks like the movie is gonna be called "Alpha Dog" as well and the poster will look like the US one. This should be the German version, because at the bottom it says "Drei Tage. Ein Verbrechen." which translates to the English tagline "Three Days. One Crime." This is from the Concorde website:

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Who knew Justin Timberlake could act?

3 stars

Everyone loves to see a crazy film that boasts "based on true events." Not only are they entertained for an hour and a half, but the fact they know this really happened can give them the added enjoyment on a whole other level. Of course, every film with some truth behind it can be the whole story, or just small details and the general idea (i.e. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre). Tons of organized crime films have a little truth behind them, and those really seem to be the big ones people love to see. Sure a biopic is fun, but not all of them contain crazy coked-up Cubans shooting everyone in sight. Whether they admit it or not, most everyone enjoys a little violence and a glimpse into the seedy underworld of drugs, sex and crime. Director Nick Cassavetes knows this so he decided to go with a true story of California teens with more drug money than sense and the bad things they go through to become the top Alpha Dog.

Taking place in California in the late 90's, Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch) is young and in rich (with money and power) since his successful drug dealing business has been quite good to him. He has a bunch of his friends working for him and gets the drug hook-up from his father, Sonny (Bruce Willis). A very sketchy friend and client, Jake Mazursky (Ben Foster), owes him around $1,200 and they get into a big brawl which turns into war between the two. After Johnny gets him fired, Mazursky retaliates by breaking into his house, trashing it and even defecating on his living room floor. When Truelove and a couple of his best cronies, including Frankie (Justin Timberlake), go out looking for Mazursky they come across his 15 year old brother Zack (Anton Yelchin) and decide to kidnap him to get his older brother to pay up. At first Zack is reasonably frightened but as he gets to know the group they get high together and have a great time over the next few days. As they all grow closer Johnny is not sure what to do, especially once he finds out the stiff penalty for kidnapping in California.

This story is based on the exploits of Jesse James Hollywood who became the youngest person to grace the FBI's Most Wanted List. Hollywood managed to evade police capture for about five years, while all of his cohorts went down right away. I will not go into more of the story or their charges so if you do not know the actual story (which was on Dateline and other prime time news programs) nothing will be ruined for you. However, I will tell you that the film is pretty accurate to the real life events, partly due to the involvement of Cassavetes' secret consultant with information from non-public documents – which was halted after awhile by court order.

This film might be true to the way things happened, but everything rushes by so quickly it is hard to follow at times. All the out-of-control rich kids look and sound alike, spewing more F-bombs than one can imagine, so at first it's kind of hard to differentiate between them. The story covers so much ground with the different lead characters, of which there are many, so some stories do not get explored enough and even one character seems to disappear by the end of the film and they never tie up his loose end. As shocking and ridiculous as most of the dealings in this film might seem, after looking into the actual events from news reports this is how it actually happened. None of the reports ever said anything about feces on the living room floor, but that had to have been real, otherwise where would Cassavetes have pulled that out of? Wait, don't answer that.

Through the majority of the picture it attempts to show the growing of the characters and bonding between "the stolen boy" and his captors. Most of this is pretty thin except for between Jake and Frankie. As surprised as I am to say this, Timberlake does a really great job. You can truly see in his eyes the struggle his character is having with the kidnapping, and how much he grows to like Jake the more time he spends with him. At first you giggle at Timberlake cussing up a storm, but after the novelty wears off his unexpectedly good acting chops take over.

Other than Timberlake being completely impressive, the rest of the cast is full of overacting. Hirsch and Chris Marquette are good as are a few of the girls (Dominique Swain and the beautiful Amanda Seyfried), but the rest just plain crazy. Bruce Willis keeps a little cool, but another big name, Sharon Stone (playing the mother of the kidnapped), chews scenery like she has not eaten in weeks. One of the more puzzling performances is Foster, who is on drugs most of the time and portrays that very well, but I wish they would explore why this Jewish character has a swastika tattooed on his chest and Nazi paraphernalia all over his apartment. Just a tad confusing.

The story itself is interesting but that alone is not enough to save what feels like a very rushed film. Worth a watch for fans of the depraved tales of a drug dealer, or if you want to see Justin Timberlake shirtless and heavily tattooed, but all others might want to stay away.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAWN!!!

Shawn (Elvis) is one reason this film is as powerful as it is. Even the early reviews have referred to his performance as "chilling." Those who have seen it no doubt agree.

He's most likely the most experienced of the actors under 30 in this film. Well, now he is 31. He deserves all the good that is coming to him.

I hope others will join me in wishing him all the best!

...and now back to our regularly scheduled threads...

Just because he's the oldest of the "young cast" doesn't mean he has the most experienced Larry, but yes he is GREAT in the film.

Not to pick nits but Shawn's 43 projects in 12 years is a few less than Chris's 48 projects in the same 12 year period --- including 3 series roles, one of which lasted 6 years and the other of which was 44 eps in a pivotal role. And he only had his 22nd birthday a couple of months ago.

Just sayin'...

Understood. But work is work. Being in front of the camera is being in front of the camera. And I have always liked to count individual movies and shows. So if we do that, counting each ep of each show, Chris has shot 141 individual movies/shows. And that doesn't include some of the stuff that's not listed on IMDb, like Barney or the animated bible shows he did voice work for when he was little. Yeah, I'd call that experience.

But it's not a contest, is it?

Happy Birthday Shawn. You rock dude!

And, yeah, I always gape when I see the looooong list of things Chris has done on IMDb when I scroll down to the message board. Truly impressive.

That explains why I was so confused when Tina talked about the 29th. Because I first thought I did read January 3.
Since when do you have your new glasses, Tina? wink

Oh yeah, he has a really long list and definitely some great work experiences. This is what I say to my brothers when they think they can make fun of him. I say: "Look at his movie list and look at yours. And then we can talk again."

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Thanks, seen those on IMDb, actually. On the page, not the message board. I'd like to know the one for the Netherlands, because I would sure drive out there if the movie isn't going to be shown here in English. Belgium would also work, I guess. Lars and I can go to somewhere for a day and pair that with a visit to the theater. smile

Oh, and I just checked WireImages prices out of curiosity. For $10 a month you get only last month's large images, for $25 last year's and the premium account for $75 gets you full access all the time. Wow, that's a lot of doe.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Yeah, I thought about Belgium or Netherlands, too. But I guess for the area where I live, France would do better. But since they dubb too, I don't know. I probably have to wait for the DVD anyway, except if the unbelievable happens and I'll have a job by March.
