I just got this email...
Dear Twilight Fans,
I'm very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in NEW MOON, and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer.
The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series.
But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part.
I think that fans of TWILIGHT, the book and the movie, will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in NEW MOON; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film.
Very Best,
Chris Weitz

I can't wait until Twilight is released on DVD. I'm definitely buying the 2 disc version!

Was Laurent supposed to be black? Not that that's a problem for me, I am just curious.
The DVD comes out only five months after it was released to the theaters. Wow.

No, he's not supposed to be black.

So I did not read something wrong while I was reading the book. Good to know. Thanks, Laura.

He was described as "ivory skinned", I believe. So he wasn't as pale as the others and actually might have been black at one time, if you think about it.

Ugh. I just caught a scene of the German version on Youtube. I don't even know why I watched it. And it was surely a bad decision. :puke:
Please Please Pleeeaaaase bring the English version to my OV theatre for my birthday!

FYI Catherine Hardwicke has just been announced as a panelist at the SXSW Film Conference (March 14 – 17). No word yet on what she'll be doing -- this was in an email from the press office. The "Conference" takes place in conjunction with the actual Film Festival.
Amazon has the 2-disc for $22.99

This kinda sucks. Twilight isn't showing at my favorite theater but only at the one that I don't like. There's never any parking and their seats give me a sore back. But of course I'm still going. I wanted to see it on Thursday, when it comes out, but the showtimes also suck. 4:40 PM is too early since I'm still at work then, and 9:30 PM is too late because I have to work on Friday. Guess I'm seeing it Saturday or Sunday afternoon then.
Will report back when I've seen it.

I'm sorry, Anne. I hope Twilight starts in theaters near you soon.

At least they're showing it SOMEWHERE near you.
I took off two days for my birthday for Twilight and now it's not even scheduled at the only source I have for undubbed movies. I mean, okay, I planned to see it one week after its release but since it's not there for next week I don't think it's going to be there the week after either.
Of course I am going to check the schedule as soon as it's only but I don't put my hopes up very high.

Here's Jackson... filming Jackson. MTV gave him a camera to film his gig with 100 monkeys.
Gotta love that smile...

Note to self: Never never never never never ever watch a movie made for teenagers in the theater on a Sunday afternoon again. Ever.
(I would like to apologize beforehand for the rant that is inevitably going to follow.)
Boy, was that annoying! I was never like this as a teenager. And I'm not just saying that.
Okay, so what happened? I went to see Twilight. See, I've never seen this theater in Cologne close to sold out except late on Saturday evenings. Because usually German teenagers aren't interested in watching movies in English. Well... obviously a whole lot of German teenage girls wanted to know what Robert Pattinson sounds like in English. And giggle and whisper and sigh whenever he says something. Or moves his head. Or his eyes. Or just... is.
See, I am like Charlie. I like my solitude. I like things simple and quiet. I don't like the crunchy popcorn or the doritos with cheese sauce. I enjoy a movie best when I can sink into it and forget that I'm sitting in a stuffy room with a couple hundred other people. Kinda hard to do that when you're trapped in between two giggly 16-year-olds on the left and five or six even gigglier 16-year-olds on the right, and more in front of you and behind you. You don't know how much I'm looking forward to watching Twilight again on DVD in a few months--alone, where there is no teenage snickering ruining every scene that Edward is in.
Having said that... let's take a look at the actual movie. My first impression? I liked it quite a lot. But I didn't love it unconditionally. I'm trying not to let my annoyance with the teenage ruckus cloud my opinion, because I still did enjoy the movie a whole lot. But... I have a few buts.
But #1: Robert Pattinson. This time I don't mean the effect he had on the girls. I just didn't connect with Edward the way I think I should have. I would even go as far as saying I don't think Robert is a very good actor. (To his defense, I've only seen him in Harry Potter and Twilight so far.) Most of the time, especially in the beginning, it was like Robert was overdoing it. Edward felt fake, didn't feel natural. Of course you could argue that a vampire isn't supposed to feel natural, but all the other vampires felt way more natural than Edward.
While we're talking about feeling natural, Mike Newton felt natural. Jacob Black felt natural. Charlie felt natural. Bella felt... natural enough. She wasn't clumsy enough, if you ask me. But I guess it would have been weird for the movie if she'd tripped over her own feet all the time.
But #2: The score. I think when you watch a movie and it has a good score, you're either supposed to not notice it much or notice it in a positive way. Not here. There were a few times where I frowned because I didn't think the score fit the scene or the atmosphere. I can't even really say why or recall when exactly, I can just say that it didn't feel right more than once. Though I did quite like that they picked Linkin Park as the end credit song.
But #3: The angles. Some of it was filmed at weird angles and had weird camera pans and cuts to the point where it felt choppy. It's hard to put your finger on, but some of these cuts were like something out of a large-budget action movie. Twilight isn't supposed to feel like an action movie. The scenes where they showed Edward's superhuman speed were a little over the top. The tree-climbing? Didn't work for me. Edward's a vampire, not a monkey.
But #4: And this isn't even a true but. Carlisle. Whoa. He was probably the character that surprised me the most visually. I had pictured him TOTALLY different. For one, I thought he would look older. Not like an aged man or anything, just... older. I also thought Jasper's hair was bordering on the ridiculous. It got a whole lot of giggles out of the girlies too. I wanted to look away whenever I saw him because the hairdo was so bad. I don't know what they were trying to do. Make him look unhumanly beautiful? Sorry, but that obviously failed--at least on me. Actually, I also thought Edward's bird's nest also looked kinda weird, but we've discussed Robert's hair at length in this very thread already.
So let's talk about the things I liked. Michael Welch. He was wonderful. Goofy. Natural. Cute. He owned Mike Newton. And he had more screentime than I thought he would have. Not so much in the last half of the movie, but he was in the first half quite a few times. I also liked Billy Burke as Charlie. And I loved Taylor Lautner as Jacob. I'm really glad he'll be back for New Moon. He'll have a whole lot more screentime in it too.
As for the movie itself, cinematographic hiccups aside, the atmosphere, the feel, the setting, that all fit very well. I was positively surprised by the Cullen's house, in my imagination it had been more like a huge palace, like an old, refurbished mansion. But I quite liked what they showed in the movie. Also, Edward's Volvo? I thought it would be more like the V50 or V70. The C30's nice too, though. I loved the scenes where they showed Edward's skin glittering. If only the girlies hadn't giggled through all of it, I might have been able to fully enjoy the kind of magical beauty of it. Oh, and I LOVED the baseball game. So much better than what I had pictured when I read the book.
Maybe I should say a word or two about the bad guys. Cam Gigandet as James didn't quite do much for me. He was just... there. I mean, yes, of course he was menacing when he attacked Bella. He just wasn't... special. I loved Victoria, though. She certainly had a presence (if it wasn't for that ridiculous fake, white furry rag she was wearing). I'm not all that impressed with the wardrobe for the movie, I have to say.
Oh, and uh... Kristen? Please eat. You look like you could use a pound or two more on your bony frame.
Last but not least, did I think the movie lived up to the book? No. Did I think the movie did the book justice? Yes, as much as a 90-minute movie can do a 434 page book justice. Which isn't to say it couldn't have been made into a better script, but it certainly felt well executed and, I guess, as true to the book as possible.
All in all, I'm looking forward to buying the DVD and to watching it again. I'm also looking forward to the sequel (NOT on a Sunday afternoon). If I had to rate it, I'd give the movie a 7 out of 10.

Uhm. You mixed something up. Cam Gigandet wasn't Jacob. He was James.
And I'll make sure to see the movie not on an afternoon showing. I HATE giggling teenagers!

Well spotted. Of course I meant James. Sorry, I'll correct that.

PS: What still weirds me out a little when I think about it is seeing Mike Welch on the big screen and then thinking back to how we sat at The Waffle in LA, having dinner with him and his mom last October. It's kinda strange that I know the guy in person, and knowing he knows who I am (which he might have forgotten in the meantime...).

Yeah, I was wondering how I would feel, seeing him on the big screen finally. It was kinda funny when we watched Nights In Rodanthe. I was like "That's Mae Whitman! I met her!" LOL
But I'm sure it'll be great to see Mike, too, since I never saw him on big screen before.
