Here is a quote from Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek:The Next Generation)
Because what has happened more and more is that some movies are essentially promotions for the DVD sales, and movie releases don't do as well as DVD.
And he's basically correct.
Look at it this way, movies are only in theaters for a few months max. But once it's out on dvd, it's there for years and years. And likely will be on any future video format as well for decades to come.
So even if a film is a flop at the box-office, in the long run any movie will turn a profit eventually.
And that's not including tv rights, pay-per-view and any other distribution areas I missed.
I'm sure Larry knows this as well, that even blockbusters very rarely break even on just it's box office receipts. First you got the cost of making the film, marketing costs, print costs, the movie theaters share, back-end deals where certain people get a % of the profit and perhaps some other things I can't think of right now.
So after all of that the studio can lose money on just the box office. That's why merchandising, advertising tie-ins, and dvd, tv rights are so important.
This reminds me of Spaceballs where 'Yogurt' says ""Merchandising, merchandising, where the REAL money is made..."
I remember the lawsuit about Coming to America where some guy was suing Paramount to get a share of the profits. But Paramount said that the film didn't make a profit, even though it was a huge hit. Like I posted above, even a blockbuster can lose at the box-office.

I'm watching the collider.com Fanboys premiere interview, and there's this really cute thing around minute 8:10. Someone screams something crazy to Kristen (you don't see it on screen and you can't hear it very well), and Chris and Steve both look on. And then Chris said, "Nobody did that for me, man. That's crazy." And Steve goes, "She's, like, a little, you know..." and Chris goes, "She's a beautiful girl. I'm, like, a nerdy guy." Awww. We still love you, Chris.

I could only get to minute 7:40 so I haven't seen that. But turn up the volume when Kristen butts in and listen to them talking to each other. I think he says that she saw him on the street and yelled "Hey fanboy!" at him, and at first he didn't realize it was her and thought, "Man, if this is what my life has become..." That seemed to be what they were saying anyway. I think that's pretty funny.

Thanks illinoisguy, yes, this is true. I've written extensively about this subject over the years. Other than film festivals and indies in general, my blog focuses on the curious world of film distribution.
I just told someone in an email that box office means crap. Lousy films rake in millions, great films do zero or are never released, and films that disappoint at the box office often go on to make millions in DVD sales & rentals and television. The fact is, theatrical is at the bottom of the list in movie profits. #1 is television and #2 is DVD sales & rentals (used to be the other way around but it doesn't matter). Box office is #3.
I cannot count how many films had a token box office run and have gone on to make millions, and even become classics, through years of TV play and DVD sales & rentals.
Let's take one example: Donnie Darko. It is one of my all-time favorite movies and a lot of other folks' as well. I've literally talked to thousands of people about their favorite films and it's one of the few that comes up constantly. Yet the film's widest release was only 58 theaters. It took in a total of $514,515 in a 6 month box office run!
Over 2 years later, it was re-released in theaters for another 18 weeks, bringing its total to $727,883.
Those are paltry numbers for a film with a $4.5 million budget.
On the other hand, we don't have the numbers, but there is no doubt it has made tens of millions if not hundreds on television deals and DVD sales and rentals over the years.

So TeeJay, um, how can I see the rest of the premiere interview? Or am I just SOL?

I downloaded the FLV file and it's 70 MB, too big to send by e-mail. I also tried to convert it to WMV, but somehow the Collider files can't be converted, I get an error message every time, no matter what conversion software I try. The only thing I can think of is sending you the link to the FLV file for you to download it yourself and then install an FLV player so you can play it off your hard drive. Send me an e-mail to my home address so that I don't forget to send you the link (can't do that from here).
You could also try some of these:

I personally haven't tried any of these since I use GetRight and AdBlock for downloading FLV files. How do you do it, Anne?

I use the Firefox extension DownloadHelper. It snags flv files and converts them to avi in one step. Almost always works.
Occasionally it snags the flv but cannot convert it. In those cases I use YouTube Downloader to convert from flv to wmv. Almost always works.

It's rare that neither one converts the flv.

The direct link to the FLV video is: http://media.collider.com/collider_vide … emiere.flv You should be able to right-click it and save it, but you'll need a player that plays FLV files since I don't think any of the usual players play it.
Btw, Frosty said they are aware of the issue that their videos aren't running smoothly and they're trying to find a solution to get it fixed.

It's interesting that Kyle says after the online uproar, Weinstein gave him literally 36 hours to recut the movie and they would only let him use the Brill cut as a basis. Wow, they were really pissed off, weren't they? Larry said that he felt some scenes should have been cut differently, and Kyle basically admits that if he'd had more time, he would have done a lot more editing to the final version. He also said he'd love to go back in ten year's time and do a director's cut. Wouldn't that be nice?

Yeah, I wanna get Guybrush's story to the guys. I'm sure they'll love it. But I asked his permission first. Kyle has said that a few times about only having basically 2 days to do the final cut. It's pretty despicable on Harvey's part.
I'm not surprised either. I just can't get over how pathetic it is for a grown man --- with so many people counting on his company to stay employed --- to act like this out of plain old revenge. Instead of thinking, "Wow, these people really care about this little movie, maybe I should give them what they want and market it to them", he thinks, "I'll show those little gnats who's boss. I'll sink their stupid movie. I don't care how much money I lose on it." Just another sociopath in a power position. Makes you wonder how many other times he's done stuff like this. And how many more of his ridiculous temper tantrums TWC can take before the whole company finally collapses in on itself.

Both my friend and I, after leaving the theater, wrote down on a piece of paper the one scene we felt went far longer than it should have, and we both chose the same scene. In case someone comes here and hasn't seen it, I'll just say it involves a statue.
P.S. I was able to download the flv from the direct link above but it would not convert with YouTube Downloader. I am now using DownloadHelper to snag the vids off the Collider site since that program converts also, so that might work.

The only scene I'd like to see cut shorter was Hutch and the sandwiches. They could cut that out altogether and I'd be happy.

Yup. The scene can't be completely cut because it comes back in the casino. It can be a lot shorter, though. The casino scene was excellent. Much tighter.

LOL Definitely pushed the gross-out envelope. There are certainly enough other bodily fluids/functions gags that will satisfy the tween boys.

Oh well, none of the flvs converted. Odd. The direct link came down as a 70MB file but converted to a 15KB file. The snags off Collider all came in as 15KB flvs. I think there's some sort of encoding/copy protection on them.
