Re: Fanboys

I got that e-mail from Kyle too. That's awesome. Wish I could see the movie again too. I forget details so easily, so I don't remember any dialogue or quotes. Would be nice to be able to geek out along with everyone, but I guess it's gonna have to wait until I see the DVD in a few months' time.

Uh... did I not post how you can download and watch the FLV file?

Re: Fanboys

You posted some techno gobbledigook and then Larry posted some techno gobbledigook and I guess I got mixed up as to which gobbledigook was which.  I'll try to sort it out when I get home.

Did anyone post the new cities on IMDb?

Re: Fanboys

Yeah, I got that mail too, but since I am not a member of many American message boards, I can't really help spread the word (as much as I'd want to) and I don't think it makes much sense to post that on German boards. So I'll have to wait for the DVD too. But as soon as I know if the movie's coming to Germany, I'll start promoting it here.

I guess I'm just a misunderstood tech geek. Anne didn't understand me either when I kept repeating the VLC player would play MKV files.

The VLC player also plays FLV files, btw. But I know you said you never got it to work on your machine, Deb.

Yes, I went right over there and it had gone up 14 minutes earlier. The person who posted it said that "I have solid info that..." as though he had some inside track lol. I would have just said it was an email from Kyle. Oh well, w/e.

Re: Fanboys

Actually, Kyle usually requests that we don't say on IMDb that the info came from him, which is why that assclown creditdauphine always accused me of lying.  But he's the one who has lied.  That big conference call he supposedly got his last info from?  Kyle said it hadn't even happened yet.  And you'll notice he wasn't the one with the "inside" info posting it today, was he?  He claims to be a publicist for TWC, but he lets ME do all his work and then insults me very, very personally when I call bullshit on his info.  That's really professional, huh?

Re: Fanboys

Kyle posted the info himself in various Facebook groups. So it's not like I'm disclosing a secret here. Maybe I should edit my post on IMDb a little.

And I'm not playing advocate for this guy because I'm not on his side, but how would Kyle know about every little publicists' telecon? Judging from what this dude posted as proof (an excerpt from a telecon agenda), it sounded like it was a very generic telecon on several upcoming TWC releases, it wasn't something done specifically for Fanboys. I don't like accusing people of being liars when maybe they just posted information they thought was correct at the time. I'm gleeful that he was wrong, though, especially since he kept insisting that what we were posting was total BS.

But, you know, maybe he was a liar and just wanted to pretend he had important insider info. I don't know. Frankly, I don't really care. All that matters is that the movie got extended to more cities.

Re: Fanboys

I don't think it's a problem saying this info came from Kyle.  And if that assclown hadn't gotten nasty and personally insulting with me the very first time we ever crossed paths on that MB, I wouldn't give a crap either.  He just kept saying that I was lying because Kyle wouldn't let me quote him about the DVD release.  There for a while he was being such a little jerk that some of us wondered if he might be Sid posting under another name.  But as we all know, IMDb jerks are a dime a dozen.  I noticed Sid showed up the other night, but I didn't read what he said.  He lives in Austin, supposedly, and the movie's playing there.  Did he bother to go see it?  Not that I give a crap.

Re: Fanboys

The Fanboys trailer is now listed on page 1 of the apple.com trailers website, that's pretty good. (Witch Mountain is also there, on page 2.) My colleague Hellen also said it's listed in Apple's Front Row software, which is a Mac application specifically designed for people who want to watch movie trailers of upcoming movies. The apple.com trailers website is usually the first place I go when I wanna catch up on what's new. I know that my colleague Rob (who's a big Apple fan) also checks Front Row often. This might give the movie more much-needed exposure. Hope it helps.

Re: Fanboys

Shawn apparently saw a commercial for Fanboys, in a city where the movie isn't even playing.  So... they're advertising.  In the wrong cities.

Re: Fanboys

He has Comcast cable then.  Ask him.  No ads are running on "network TV".  Only on Comcast.  And you will see them no matter where you live if you have that cable company.

Re: Fanboys

Yep, he has Comcast.  This was our conversation when he told me he saw it:

him: we're going to see it right?
me: I just told you, it's not playing in Pittsburgh
him: then we can go to wherever it is playing
me: are you really that desperate to see Kristen Bell in the Princess Leah bikini?
him: ... maybe

Yup. Exactly why I knew he didn't have to not mention Kyle.

Just as an FYI about IMDb, in particular (this does not apply to this message board, BTW) --

Pretty much all I do is post info I get from filmmakers, producers, actors, publicists, and others involved with projects. That's pretty much all I've been doing for several years. So I completely understand the politics of information disclosure. Nobody is more sensitive than I as to whether attribution is appropriate or not. Trust me, you make that mistake once and you never do it again! In fact, even if I'm not told not to, I still usually ask if attribution is okay. I would have accepted that guy's non-attribution as appropriate if not for the fact that Kyle had been posting this widely and it wasn't like a private email.

In general, though, I do think it's a good idea not to have the info appear to be coming from the filmmakers themselves. Buzz/viral marketing is all about grassroots. There's some dishonesty to it but you have to decide whether or not the end justifies the means.

Anywhoo...just a little insight into how I operate. If it was me, though, not only would I not have mentioned Kyle but I also would not have said "I have inside info..." That smacks of big ego. I simply would have posted the list of cities and waited for a response.

No importante, though. wink (Again, I am mainly referring to IMDb, not here)

RE: Comcast advertising -- they do have the ability to target specific areas. In fact, with Comcast, they can actually target specific neighborhoods, which cannot be done on network TV. Regular TV can only narrow advertising down to broadcast areas, which are usually metropolitan areas. Comcast can send out ads just to a few blocks if they wanted to. So I don't understand why they would advertise in an area where the film isn't even showing, unless it's part of that "we're really advertising the DVD" idea. wink

Re: Fanboys

Maybe TWC wouldn't pay for them to do targeted marketing, but instead just had them slap the trailer up and stick all the future DVD extras in the On Demand menu.

My understanding (inside info lol) is that TWC got quite a nice bit of $$$ for the Comcast deal.

Re: Fanboys

It's just an exclusivity deal that allows Comcast sole access to and broadcast rights to the material (trailers, features, etc.). It's similar to deals that Apple, MSN, Yahoo, AOL, etc. cut when they have first rights to a trailer, song, etc.

It works like this. Let's say you want to bring lots of traffic to your site. The best way to do that is to have some sort of exclusive deal with a film. On the one hand, it's a win/win because both sides benefit. On the other hand, it's really more in your interest than theirs since they can put their material anywhere. So they sell the rights to the highest bidder. In this case, that would be you. So you would pay them to allow you to have exclusive rights to post the material.

It's essentially no different than when NBC pays the NFL for the exclusive rights to broadcast certain football games, or when HBO pays Paramount to have them be the only cable network allowed to broadcast their movies.

Greaaaat.  So not only does Harvey choose not to buy any advertsing.  He gets paid by Comcast to advertise his movie for him.  I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
