Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I watched Stepford Wives.

For $3 not too bad. Some funny moments. But I think they let on that the women weren't themselves way too early. But I did like the twist at the end.

Close, Kidman and Midler were excellent. Walken was also very good. Broderick was ok, somewhat miscast though.

If I had to rate it on an A-F scale, I think I would rate it a C+

You know, after I watched Twilight, I refused to become a fan, but then I watched the trailer for How To Be and I loved it so much, so I looked for some of his other work and had to admit that he does have great talent. But Chris will always be my No. 1 Favorite Actor. That's not gonna change just because I like Pattinson's performances, too.

Chris will always be my number one favorite actor as well.  smile
Also, Speak is a great movie and in my opinion Kristen Stewart's best performance.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I think Kristen was amazing in Speak.  Her age and the subject matter is the first thing that really impressed me about her performance, she was only 13 and dealing with a fairly mature subject (rape), though it is, sadly, something people of all ages have to worry about.  And the fact that she had very few lines really impressed me.  She said so much with her eyes.

HAHAHAHA This screen cap alone was enough to have me buy the DVD "Secret Men's Business" from EBay. And im not nearly as dirty as it sounds. All 3 of those actors are AMAZING. Simon Baker is probably the most well known. But whoa, Marcus Graham and Ben Mendehlson are both so talented. I am a such a sucker for Aussie talent.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I got to meet Simon Baker when he was in The Guardian in Pittsburgh. They shot across the street from where my mom's office was (I worked there sometimes over the summer as a filer) and one day they closed down her building for a few hours so we got to watch them tape.  Sweetest guy ever.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Bought these today from Walmart.

First, Walmart has an exclusive double pack of Knowing & Push. However, they don't even have the dvd on their site. So can't post a pick of that case.

Also bought the Walmart exclusive double pack of Hairspray & their bonus dvd.
Just $3, so why not.

So I just finished watching Speak. Really a very impressive movie. Great performance by Kristen Stewart. Of course that's only my opinion. But still, I think she did great.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Watched Knowing.

To put it simply it reminds me of When Worlds Collide (Solar Flare instead of a planet) and a cross between that and Close Encounters.

Spoilers, so don't read below.

***SPOILERS***

There are many similarities between the two films.

1st. A few are chosen to survive. WWC is by lottery, Knowing is chosen by the aliens.
2nd. In both life on Earth is destroyed and scenes of cities being destroyed are shown.
3rd. The chosen leave the Earth before it's destruction by ship.
4th. The chosen land on another planet in an attempt to continue the species.

I'm sure there are more that I missed.

Overall a good film, but the tv spots were somewhat misleading. The TV Spots led me to believe that he found these numbers and discovered the link to disasters. And that he was going to stop future disasters from happening.

It's a good movie, but just average. C+.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Huh?  The numbers were links to the disasters and he tried to stop them.  But since this movie is just little more ambitious than your standard Roland Emmerich popcorn disaster flick, there wasn't going to be a "normal" happy ending where the hero saves the day.  Personally, I loved that.  It's one of the few movies I've ever seen that had the audience both gasping in shock a few times, and crying their eyeballs out.   I think that if you surrender to the premise, it's a very effective thinking man's thriller.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Actually the only disaster that he actively tried to stop was the subway crash. The airplane crash he really just happened to be there. The final disaster was way beyond his control to do anything about, all he really tried to do was get to a certain location but he really didn't know why.

Really the only disaster that was graphic was the airplane crash, that was shocking. But the subway crash really wasn't and the final one was a big city getting destroyed. Nothing really made me cry at all.

It was somewhat confusing as to whom these strangers at first. Were they ghosts or angels, but that one scene when Cage runs up to one of them in the dark and where the light comes from the stranger I knew right there what they were and where the story was going to go from there.

I don't really think it's a thriller at all, it's really just a puzzle that fits into a standard disaster movie.
It's also not a big deal that it doesn't end on a happy note, When Worlds Collide end basically the same way. Even with today's standard disaster movie there are thousands or millions of people that get killed in the film, not really a big deal that there is some sort of a reunion or happy ending in disaster movies either. Even this movie has a somewhat happy ending with the last shot of the chosen landing on the new planet and knowing that the species will continue.

Again, I don't hate the movie, not do I love it. It's a good movie, but just sort of average. Kind of like once I saw it, it seems like I seen it all before - which I did when so many elements were borrowed from When Worlds Collides.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I watched Push today.

It's an ok action film with supernatural aspects. But it's also needlessly complicated and confusing. The ones that screams to kill people (called Bleeders) are just annoying as hell.

Of the two, Knowing & Push, Knowing is the better film.
