Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

My question wasn't about dubbing in the Netherlands...

You know for sure at this point that it'll be dubbed only in Germany?

Are you reading this stuff too fast again?  wink

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

I'm not sure what you're asking. You asked if German wasn't the only country that dubs it. No, of course not. France dubs, Spain dubs, Italy dubs. I know that the Netherlands don't dub, that's all I need to know.

If you're asking if there might be other places in Germany where they show it without dubbing, yes, there probably will be. Just a matter of finding out where, and that's not always easy. But I can tell you that 90 out of 100 times it will be shown dubbed. And the Netherlands is just one or two hours away by car. That's far closer than some big cities in Germany that might show it without dubbing. But you can be sure that I will check where and when I can catch the movie at the earliest time possible without dubbing.

Thanks Illinois, that's a little better anyway.

TeeJay, I mean how do you know it will not be shown in English anywhere near you (in Germany) at this point?

I was wondering about that too actually. I mean, I thought they show a lot of movies undubbed in Düsseldorf. Even more that Stuttgart does, I think.

I don't, but I have a pretty good feel about what kinds of movies they'll show in Düsseldorf. Usually the blockbusters, and as good as it might be, AD just isn't one of them. It's just not the kind of movie I'd expect for them to show without dubbing. Of course I could be wrong. Lately they've been showing less and less movies in English, so I'm not expecting that to pick up until March either. They didn't even show Blood Diamond, Pursuit of Happiness, Hannibal Rising or the new Rocky movie in English. And those I would have counted on (not that I wanted to see any of them except for Pursuit of Happiness). Right now they're only showing two movies in English: Dreamgirls <puke> and The Good Shepherd. It used to be up to five a week.

There's one theater in Cologne that only shows English movies, usually four or five a week. It's tricky to get to by car, parking sucks and the interior and technical equipment is crappy. It'll still be better than nothing and I'd totally go there for any of Chris's movies. I just know I won't be able to drive out to my usual and favorite theater and languidly watch this movie. It's gonna be a hassle either way and, being a comfort zone person, I need to bitch about how it'll suck not to just drive out to my usual theater and see the movie for just 6 EUR with my 5-star ticket.

Doesn't mean it's impossible that it may still happen and doesn't mean I wouldn't drive for a few hours to go catch the movie in English. Or any of Chris's movies. But maybe I won't have to, seeing how I might be able to persuade Klaus to help me out. Let's hope for the best, whatever that'll turn out to be.

And you know I'm the glass-is-half-empty person and I'll never be a positive thinker. Maybe I'm a glass-is-half-empty-and-it's-cracked-so-it's-all-gonna-spill-out person at that.

OK, so I gotta ask, this being the case why the bleedin' hell haven't you already watched your stealth copy?  Do you just enjoy torturing yourself for no reason?

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Because I don't have it yet!! Even if I had, I'd want to watch this movie on a big screen for the first time, and not just my 70 cm TV screen. Is that so hard to understand? Probably is. Just accept it. It's this thing I have. A movie intended for the big screen should be watched on the big screen, Chris or no Chris. At least those that I'm pretty sure I'm gonna like a lot. JF and AG weren't movies I thought I'd really like a lot as a whole. Turned out to be true, although both were okay. AG more so than JF. But I'd totally take Klaus' beamer experience since that's almost gonna be like in a theater.

See, it's like if I would ask you to wait a week with watching a Chris movie on the big screen for the first time because I was coming over a week after it premiered. You wouldn't. Which is something I personally can't understand (and would do differently), but it's your thing and you gotta go with it if it makes you happy.

Pleasure delaying, remember? Call it self-torture if you like. I don't see it as torture. Just as relishing the experience more when I finally do get to see it.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

See, it's the German pessimism thing. It's subconsciously ingrained in our brains that we're the country who lost the war(s) ("Don't mention the war!!" LOL), who were disappointed time and again and who just expect the worst to happen in any given situation. Okay, that's maybe over-generalizing, but I dare say the Germans as a whole are more pessimistic than other cultures, like, say, the Americans or the French. I've learned to live with it and it works fine for me. Makes for less disappointment and more rejoicing if good things happen despite the worst-case-scenario attitude.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

OK, on the one hand you don't think it'll show in your area and you spend a paragraph telling us how horrible a pain in the ass it's going to be to find a way to see it.  And then you say you'll wait?  Till when?  Till hell freezes over?  You're right, I don't get that.

We'd all like to see everything the man does on the big screen but as long as he keeps taking these indy roles, that's just not gonna happen.  Can't you see that by now?  I mean, we already waited two damn years for this movie.  I will never understand putting more self-imposed restrictions on when you'll get to see it.

And I'm still confused.  Exactly what do you plan to do here?  Wait till you might be able to see it in English on the big screen --- someday?  Or watch it with Klaus when you get it?

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

If Klaus says yes, I'm gonna see it with his beamer as soon as we can arrange a date. Meaning maybe next week or next weekend. If it shows in a theater in March or April in English, I'm gonna watch it again on a really big screen. If not, I might not have a craving as big as driving to the Netherlands for it and just wait for the DVD and watch it in Dolby Surround from the DVD (either at my place or at Klaus' again--provided Heike and him haven't moved away by then, as I think that's in the works).

How can I wait till hell freezes over? If they don't show the movie around here in English the week it opens, they won't show it at all. So the waiting would be over at the latest in May. Because by then we'll hopefully have the DVD and I would know by then if the movie showed in any theater close enough to drive to around here. But the way things are going, I will probably have watched it by next weekend. Cross your fingers, will ya?

Good luck with that. So if the quality works and you make me a copy I may travel to Chibi's and watch the movie with her. But I have to make sure that I understand everything right, Chibi's English is not as good as mine and mine is still far from perfect.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

I actually kind of doubt that you'll be motivated to seek it out in a theatre after you see it on DVD (or whatever).  Chris is really not in it enough to put yourself through all of that.  In fact, after all this to-ing and fro-ing, I'm worried that you won't think the movie was worth any of the trouble you had to go through to see it.  It's not everyone's cup of tea.  Hope Klaus doesn't think you're nuts about 15 minutes into the movie --- the part Elaine walked out on.  If you can get him to stick with it till the end, he might like it.  Just be forewarned.  Not all the negativity about the movie is trollsqueeze.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

I don't really think Klaus and Heike are gonna watch it with me. Klaus doesn't speak enough English and Heike's also isn't that great. I doubt they'd understand enough to want to watch it. I'll ask them if they wanna watch it with me or if they'd rather let me sponsor them a night at the movies to watch a movie they actually wanna see in the theater. Klaus is Heike's boyfriend and I barely know him. She's one of my oldest friends. So I'm not sure Klaus is gonna say yes in the first place, though I can see him doing so if I explain to him why I wanna watch this movie so badly. He's a huge movie buff. He has two shelves filled with DVDs.

In this case, with this particular movie, it might be best if you do watch it alone.

Oh, btw... The official Alpha Dog site updated the info on Chris. It's nothing we don't know yet. Sounds like something taken straight from our bio. wink At least it's accurate and current, it mentions both Graduation and TI and of course the older stuff he did.

I wasn't saying they got all the info from our site. What's on the AD site is what's on pretty much all of his bio pages. Could be info from his management, could be from IMDb, could be from wikipedia or some could have been from us.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Since Klaus and Heike are going on vacation next weekend, Klaus said he won't be able to let me watch the movie with his beamer before middle of March. Well, maybe I'll catch it in the theater first after all. But that's fine, I'm used to the waiting. And, yes, now that I have a copy of it and refuse to watch it on my simple TV, it's self-torture and self-deprivation, but that's me and that's what I'm gonna do. Just shake your head and accept it.

Re: Alpha Dog (STRONG LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT)

Why should I not accept that, you at least have the possibility to watch it on TV. I would probably have to watch it on this crappy computer screen, because my parents won't allow me to watch it on TV. Although I could wait until a Tuesday, it's the only day of the week I am alone ...
My dream is still to watch it together with Chibi. We could watch the German version in the theater and then watch the English version on TV. I'd totally do that. LOL
