Re: for Simon ....

Yep, the big, thick fluffy ones are American biscuits.  Since I grew up on them, it's cracking me up that ya'll think they're so weird.  tongue

They kind of are like big, salty scones.  Most people eat them with butter and jam, or honey.  But in the south, we love our biscuits and gravy.  I get this great breakfast quite often of breaded & fried pork tenderloin, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy and hash browns.  It's about a billion calories, but it's awesome.

Re: for Simon ....

Mmm fair enough. I dont think they are weird. We just dont really have them here. Besides if we are talking breakfast that other countries think are strange I cant really talk coming from the Australian background of vegemite. Have you guys tried vegemite? I have yet to meet a non-Australian that enjoys it

Edit: Hahaha I was just thinking the kind of reaction you would get here if you asked for biscuits with gravy. Hahaha

Re: for Simon ....

I've had lots of Australian food, actually.  Because of my former writing partner, a former co-worker at a company I used to work for, and a great little restaurant we have called Australian Bakery Cafe.  My co-worker once got a care package from home and she had to make everyone try Vegemite.  I have to say it was one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted in my life.  Reminded me of earwax, actually.  What is that stuff made from anyway?

Re: for Simon ....

Haha well to make it even more appealing its actually concentrated yeast extract. Sounds yummy...*sarcasm plus!*

But if you have tried Australian biscuits. Have you ever had tim tams? mmmmmmmm SOOOOOO good. Or the tim tam dunk, where you bite both ends of the tim tam and then drink a hot chocolate or coffee through the biscuit (cookie biscuit type). OH YUM!

Re: for Simon ....

Nope, but I'm sure the have that at ABC. They actually have this huge wall of imported Aussie food.  I'll check next time I go there.  I remember that Merete got some in her care package though.

Re: for Simon ....

I think Vegemite is something only Australians and maybe New Zealanders can appreciate. I also found it profoundly despicable. smile The Brits have something similar, called Marmite, but I'm told it tastes slightly different than Vegemite. I don't like either. My British colleague Rob swore by half-burnt toast with Marmite. Ugh!

Re: for Simon ....

I've tried Vegamite, and that was the last time I'll be putting any in my mouth.  Blechh!  No offense to any Aussies who eat it and love it.  It must be an acquired taste.

Tim Tams DO look good.  They look like Tasty Cakes or Little Debbies.  And lots of variety, which is nice.:P  http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&s … CCgQsAQwAw

Re: for Simon ....

Another big no on vegemite.  I was surprised how much I didn't like it.  Usually when I try another cultures food, even if I don't like it, I can usually see how one could like it.  But Vegemite is the exception.  It is interesting how many of us have tried it though.

Re: for Simon ....

Me too, Rick.  One of my favorite things is exploring other cultures through their food.  I'm very adventurous.  Not much I won't try once.  But yeah, I can't see the appeal at all either.
