Okay, so let's take a closer look at Keith's transformation throughout this movie.

ATTENTION, THERE'S HEAVY FOUL LANGUAGE ALL OVER THIS POST!

And heavy spoiler warning as well. Read on at your own discretion.

First scene, he's a total skunk:

"Oooh, anniversary. You gonna have a little sex or someth-- Ow! Whatever, I'm interested. I mean, really, are you gonna go down on him? Give him a little tube steak boogie?"

Second scene, he's Frankie's homey:

"Fucking Keith, man. Go, go, let's smoke some fucking weed, man."

Third scene, he couldn't be any more stoned:

"Dude, fuck you, suck my balls, man. You suck it, bitch."

Fourth scene, Frankie trusts him with a secret:

"That's fucked up. I don't know, man. Sounds pretty fucking dubious."

Fifth scene, he flips out:

"Don't say anything, you're gonna get me in a lot of fucking trouble. You shut the fuck up, you fucking bitch! I will knock your ass down, chill out!"

Sixth scene, he's the total goofball, bouncing up and down the diving board:

Seventh scene, goofball again, playing hacky-sack, laughing his ass off while Frankie and Susan fight over Zack:

Eighth scene, he gets it on with a hot girl, giving Zack shit about his age:

"Seventeen? This motherfucker's fifteen years old. I'm sorry. Jesus. They don't care anyway, man."

Ninth scene, he can't believe Zack got some nookie (jealous, Keith?):

"No...?"

Tenth scene, he realizes something's up and starts to worry:

"Where's Frankie? I need a ride home."

Eleventh scene, he knows what's going on, and he doesn't want to be a part of it:

"I can't do-- I can't do this, man. Gotta fucking go home."

... and decides to bail, but not before having said his goodbye to Zack:

Twelfth scene, he winces in agony as he hears the shots that kill Zack:

Thirteenth scene, he's all smug and defiant as the police question him about his involvement in the killing:

Wow! Chris, you nailed it. What a fucking awesome ride.

I'm not sure we should have all this bad language on here. Young fans, ya know. But I love what you did. It's funny and a great way to see his range in the movie. But at least put and all caps foul language warning at the very beginning of the post or something.

One thing though, in the scene where they're playing video games, he didn't say, "You sucking bitch." He said, "You suck it, bitch." in response to Frankie telling him to suck it. Then it just becomes them saying suck it back and forth. That became a big joke on the IMDb board when Nick, Matt and relaxalot started signing off their replies to the trolls with, SUCK IT!

About this pic:

I would like to point out that one of the only disappointments for me in the whole movie is the fact that right here, when Johnny passes by behind Keith at the party, that's as close as Chris and Emile are to each other in the whole film. I don't know if they had any stuff together in the deleted scenes, but there was nothing in the theatrical release between them at all. Bummer we got no onscreen GND reunion.

Also, that makes you wonder if Keith even knew Johnny at all. They were partying at Frankie's house. Is it possible that he didn't? We know that he didn't know Elvis. How sad is it if Graham Pressley didn't even know Jesse James Hollywood but he still took part in murder for him? Destroyed all those families for him. Why the hell would anybody do that?

How tight were Frankie and Johnny? I find it unlikely that if Keith hangs out with Frankie a lot, he would never have met Johnny. But of course we don't know. Yes, it's kinda sad to think about how many lives were affected by the decisions Johnny made. So, did I get it right, Johnny was about to blow the whole thing off, but Elvis killed Zack before Johnny had a chance to stop him? Wow, that makes it so much more tragic.

Oh, and stay tuned for vidcaps of Chris's performance. I will be working on those over the weekend.

But see, Frankie's dad lived in Palm Springs. Johnny and his crew lived in suburban LA. That's like 100 miles apart or so. I don't think Johnny went out to Palm Springs that often. They were going out there for Fiesta. You'd probably stay the weekend for that if you're partying. And Keith and Susan lived in Palm Springs. So they didn't party in LA with Johnny's crew. It's not really very likely that they knew each other actually. And probably why it was such a big deal that Susan and Keith we're going to get to go to Frankie's house for the really good homegrown. And hang out indefinitely with him.

Much the same can be said of Chucky Mota. He was one of Frankie's "Palm Springs friends". He didn't know any of the guys who showed up at his apartment except Frankie.

Same story in real life.

So Keith at least knows of Johnny, who he is. Doesn't mean they've met, though. Susan also mentions Johnny's name like they all know who he is.

About Chris Marquette:

Chris was also somewhat limited in his ability to go outside the lines of what the person he was portraying was all about. But he had the good fortune to have a turnabout similar to Justin's. Chris' character starts out somewhat on the outside of the story, but he becomes more involved as the film progresses. Again, I don't want to give anything away. But at one point he takes a turn that was a "whoa" moment for me. His range of acting ability does come out as his character does change, much as Justin's does.

Yeah, that's chunk of Larry's review from post-Sundance. The "whoa" moment for Larry was when Keith and Susan go at each other. Larry and I talked about it. He'd never seen Chris go off like that in anything before. I told him he needs to see American Gun.
