Re: Message Board announcements

Just a heads up that I'm gona have to update the message board system once again. I might attempt to do it tonight, so if the board is down for a while, that's why. Cross your fingers that things will go smoothly.

Re: Message Board announcements

I don't think it's gonna be today, though. Time kinda got away from me and now it's getting kinda late to attempt this. If everything works, it's no big deal. But if it doesn't, it's gonna need time to figure out why. And I'd much rather do that when I don't have a timeline to work against.

Re: Message Board announcements

Okay, so I've made the update now. We lost a few functions that I can't figure out how to get back, including the "Quick Quote" and (for mods and admins only) the "Move Post" function. That means we won't be able to move single posts anymore, which kinda sucks. I think we also lost the smilies for the "Quick post" function.

Man, I'm sick of this, but I don't have the energy right now to mess with the PHP code (that I don't know enough about in the first place). Plus, I don't want to spend hours on rewriting PHP code every time a new FluxBB version comes out, so right now I will leave it at saying we'll have to live with these "losses".

Re: Message Board announcements

Thanks, but I'm still kinda bummed about losing the "Move Post" thing. It's nothing that regular users would use, but as a mod or admin, it was something we did use every now and then. Oh well, such is life. Can't have everything, right?

Re: Message Board announcements

Just a little piece of advice because Maria inadvertently replied to a spammer posting something on the message board today. I have since deleted that post (and the spammer). It was something almost innocent sounding (someone asking whether she might have gotten pregnant after forgetting to take the pill for one day), but the dead giveaway that this was a spammer was that there were links in the signature to a website where you could buy pills.

Long story short: My suggestion for any members here on the MB, please check posts for dubious looking links in the signature before you engage anyone in conversation. If there's a link to a site that tries to sell you something (no matter if it's something material or a service), chances are that this person isn't interested in having a conversation (much less about anything Chris-related). That person would be a spammer who signed up for the sole purpose of trying to promote their product.

I usually look up these people's information on the Stop Forum Spam website. If they're listed, I delete them. If they're not listed and clearly spammers, I delete them too.

Just FYI: We have a captcha thingy in our registration for the forum to keep spambots from registering. I'm still amazed at the sheer number of people signing up here who are real people and even make the effort of looking up our Chris-related captcha questions. Someone must be paying these fakers to be doing that kind of crap. I can't explain it otherwise.

Anyway, spammers are out there. They sign up on this MB just like any other. You wouldn't believe how many of them I have deleted in recent weeks. It seems to be getting worse too. The world is an evil place.

Re: Message Board announcements

Yeah I did notice that post too. For me I thought the giveaway was her asking such a personal question with it only being her first post on the board which I thought was weird. I am glad you are catching these spammers, but it must be annoying for you. Spammers suck!

Re: Message Board announcements

I missed it. What was the question?

Maria, the general give-away is that they ask something really bizarre or just make an odd comment on a post.  And it's almost never about Chris.

Re: Message Board announcements

I didn't read the whole thing. It was a girl with some kind of story how she forgot to take the pill one day and wondered if she could be pregnant now.

Re: Message Board announcements

I fell for it because I was so used to posts like that on a mommy board I used to be active with circa 2006-2008. took a few looks there again a while ago. but I'll try to remember these weirdos here..

I wish I could tell that to that stupid trojan that infected my laptop. And it would actually do what I tell it to. *sigh* roll
My brother agreed to help me trying to safe my files on Sunday, but now he's sick and can't come. HOWWW on earth did I deserve that? :crying: :witsend:

To quote Coop from Nurse Jackie:

Because I realized we haven't lost the "Move Post" function after all. It's now hidden in the "Moderate Topic" option at the bottom of the screen, and (amazingly) it still works. (This will be accessible to admins and mods only, though.) My inner geek just wanted to share that. smile
