Michael Crichton -- whose books were made into films including "Jurassic Park" and "The Andromeda Strain" -- died Tuesday. He was 66.

The author died "after a courageous and private battle against cancer," according to his Web site. A statement on MichaelCrichton.net said Crichton died "unexpectedly" in Los Angeles.

Crichton was a brand-name author, known for his stories of disaster and systematic breakdown, such as the rampant microbe of "Andromeda" or dinosaurs running amok in "Jurassic Park," one of his many books that spawned major Hollywood movies.

Crichton also was a screenwriter and filmmaker, earning producing and writing credits for the film versions of many of his titles. He also created the NBC hospital drama "ER" in 1994.

"Michael was an extraordinary man. Brilliant, funny, erudite, gracious, exceptionally inquisitive and always thoughtful," "ER" executive producer John Wells said Wednesday. "No lunch with Michael lasted less than three hours, and no subject was too prosaic or obscure to attract his interest. Sexual politics, medical and scientific ethics, anthropology, archeology, economics, astronomy, astrology, quantum physics, and molecular biology were all regular topics of conversation. I was blessed to have known him and proud to be able to have called him my friend."

In recent years, Crichton was the rare writer to get on well with President Bush, perhaps because of his skepticism about global warming, which Crichton addressed in the 2004 novel "State of Favor." Crichton's views were strongly condemned by environmentalists, who alleged that he was hurting efforts to pass legislation to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.

A new novel by Crichton had been tentatively scheduled to come next month, but publisher HarperCollins said the book was postponed indefinitely because of his illness.

An "in memoriam" posting on his Web site read, "While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so -- his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.

Bought the Get Smart dvd from Best Buy
catgetsmartshoephoneopewv8.jpg

It's actually larger than I thought. The shoe folds out and it must be at least a size 13 size shoe. Also when you turn the dial it makes the old phone dialing sound.

I also bought a Fantasy- Adventure Collector's Set from Walmart for $5.00
It has 4 films that includes The Curse of King Tut's Tomb, Blackbeard, Merlin's Apprentice and the 2005 version of Poseidon Adventure with Peter Weller. It runs a total of 697 minutes.

CED discs were large discs that were held in a caddy. You never touched the disc, but inserted the entire caddy into the player and the machine would remove it from the caddy. The discs were played with a needle, much like a record.

Here is what this site http://www.impawards.com/

A funny Yoda-inspired tag line at the bottom and a very humorous take on the 40-Year-Old Virgin design.

To each their own I guess.

But I agree with you guys, the poster is terrible.

I like this one the best:
normal_FanboysPosterStarWars.jpg

But I think I would move the van down. Right now it looks like it's floating in mid air. Same thing with the movie marque. I would move both down and fill in the top with stars.

Perhaps the Jedi poster would be a good thing to try and copy.

Here is an early review.

WARNING

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

>

It appears that the highly anticipated teen vampire movie, "Twilight", has been screened for some claims they saw it. From what I have read about the movie it seems like the real deal. The reviewer calls herself a "BIG BIG Fan", so it might not be the most unbiased review in the world .   Also, what the hell is a "fan-pire?"

As a warning, the following review contains spoilers.

HERE IT IS:

Hello Nuke the Fridge my name is "Seattle Mama". I am a BIG, BIG fan of "Twilight" and had a chance to go see a "secret" screening of Twilight the other day in my hometown.  I love your website and thought I would send you guys a review.

I am not great at writing reviews but I will try my very best....

Any true fan of this book would have "killed" to get an early view such as the one I was so lucky to attend. A sneak preview to Twilight is just icing on the cake for me because I was one of many joining in on the hysteria of Stephenie Meyer's New York #1 bestseller.  Before the movie began a studio representative told the small audience that the movie was only 90% finished (Mostly some FX & sound not finished). Nevertheless the movie was still very impressive. For those of you who are not "Fan-pire's" this movie is a bit of a twist on the traditional Vampire.

It starts with Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart) an ordinary "Plain Jane" who doesn't care about any of the teen trendy stuff. She decides to move in with her father who happens to be the sheriff of the rainy, gloomy town of Forks, Washington. Not expecting much excitement to happen there she meets him, Edward Cullen (played by Robert Pattinson) a mystery as well as stunning sight. Bella can't help but get herself into finding out more about Edward and his family. She later finds out they're really Vampires. Bella starts to fall in love with Edward who is fighting himself not to kill her because of his love for her. Their relationship though has caused trouble with a clan of new Vampires passing by to threaten their town because of the fact that Edward doesn't just kill her.

So how is it compared to the book? I felt that the cast that was picked did an amazing job of trying to nail down the image and personality of their characters from the books (Rosalie - need I say more).  Especially great was Robert Pattinson.  I know what you guys at Nuke the Fridge say about him not being a good vampire, but to me he is the sexiest vampire ever on film.

Though I feel that this movie is not going to be as highly hailed as Lord of the Rings was for being "dead on" book wise.  But for the most part the book and the movie are pretty close.  There are a couple of differences, but I don't want to say too much other than one of the differences involves a death that didn't take place in the book.   There were also some things that I had wished were in the movie but if I were not a fan of the series I guess it wouldn't bother me too much because it flowed pretty well.  I did feel that the wire stunts were a bit too much at times.  Almost took me out of the movie a couple of times.   I do think "Twilight" will certainly be a hit and I feel that the studio will most likely continue on to making the next 3 films.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being best -  I give it an 8 ½."

Dictionary of Accounting Terms
write-down

reduction of part of the balance of an asset by charging an expense or loss account. The reason for a write-down is that some economic event has occurred indicating that the asset's value has diminished. An example is the obsolescence of some inventory.

Thought you guys would like to read this.

But you may not like what he says about Fanboys.

Weinstein Company Blames Mystery Man For Spreading "False" Writedown Rumor

UPDATE: It's not just that The Weinstein Company is denying today's buzz in film financing circles that it's taken a $50 million writedown because of all the movies it's dumped into 2009. Nah, what's way more interesting is that it's blaming a specific guy for spreading the rumor. This afternoon, Harvey's attorney Bert Fields phoned to tell me on the record: "This story is complete false. There is no Weinstein writedown, not for $50 million, not for $5. We think we know who's feeding this venomous garbage to the media, and when we do he'll find himself on the wrong end of a very big lawsuit." So enquiring minds want to know: who's Harvey fighting with now? Because this unnamed guy, whoever he is, must be a heavy to have major people take what he says as near-gospel. Indeed, this morning I heard the buzz in film financing circles that The Weinstein Company had to writedown $50 million of Goldman Sachs' money this week. It's reportedly taking the loss because of those four films it dumped into next year, Crossing Over, Killshot, Fanboys and Shanghai, plus The Road... (And let's face it: who in their right mind thinks even one of those pics is going to make a dime of profit in 2009?) I also just received an emailed denial from Irv Reiter, the EVP of Financial Reporting at the Weinstein Company: "With regards to your blog entry of October 28 regarding the Weinstein Company I am writing to confirm that The Weinstein Company has not taken a writedown on any of the films mentioned; Kill Shot, Crossing Over, Fan Boys, Shanghai and The Road."

Don't know, but I found this online that may help you at least get the drawer open.

Step1
Turn off your DVD player. You do not want to risk electrical shock while working with it.
Step2
Locate your DVD player's manual Eject button. It is usually a small hole located underneath the DVD drawer.
Step3
Insert a stiff wire—such as a paperclip or safety pin—into the hole. Push gently and the drawer should open partway. Gently pull the drawer the rest of the way open.
Step4
Remove the DVD and see if there is a problem with it. Most DVD player drawers get stuck when a DVD is warped or the label is starting to peel. If the DVD is warped, discard it. If the label is peeling, remove the label.
Step5
Turn your DVD player back on. If it gets stuck again on a different DVD, then the problem may be with your DVD player rather than with your DVDs.

The hole could also be underneath the player on some players.

Also I would do more than just turn it off, I would also disconnect the power cord to be safe.

When and why did this start? Wasn't it stated a while ago they wouldn't restrict the boards to orange users?

So I wasn't the only one affected, according to them it was some sort of glitch.

Also found this.

Hi

We are currently looking into a problem which is causing existing users to be asked to authenticate their account before they can post.

Sorry about this, I will post again as soon as I hear anything more.

Never even heard of Shark Bait before.

Kind of looks like a combination of Finding Nemo & Shark Tale.

Now I know why I've never heard of it, according to IMDB it wasn't even released in the U.S. theatrically. It was however released here on DVD by the Weinstein Company.

#570 Re: Off Topic Stuff » IMDB now needs you to verify your account » 29 Oct 08 :: 14:00

Yeah, I knew that it was for new users, but I thought if you were on there before that went into effect that you didn't have to verify your account unless you were causing trouble on the boards. Which I haven't done anything that would warrant that. Heck I don't even post on there as much as I used to.

Oh well, whatever.

Adding another question.

When did you buy your first dvd player?
For me 1997, when they first came out in the five test markets in early 1997.
