From ontb:

Summit made its first Comic Con appearance with a bang: they brought the surprise grassroots phenomenon Twilight. The Twilight panel was filled with screaming superfans who drowned out the dumbstruck talent on the stage.

The problem for Summit is that they didn't win over new believers; I kept hearing huge nerds being condescending about the Twilight fans. The Summit panel actually felt like a Twilight convention had been teleported into the middle of Comic Con. I saw women at the Con in t-shirts that read "I don't read comics, I'm here for Twilight." It seems obvious that Twilight will open, but will it appeal beyond the Hot Topic set? It doesn't seem like it'll get the geek boost (although how surprising is it that this crowd can't get behind a girl-oriented property?).

By the way, Twilight fans are the new objects of ridicule for people who are the rest of society's objects of ridicule.

Just a little update on the potential UPS Strike.

From the teamsters.net forum.

We are down to 4 days And are no closer to getting a deal done. Pat flynn from local 710 and marty frates from local 70 and the chairman of norcal have both sat in on negotiations with 705. As of right now other ups locals are offering to extend picket lines, Norcal in nortern california, locals 396 and 63 in southern california, local 25 in boston, local 804 in new york and 174 in seattle. If ups thought that chicago was in this alone they are wrong. Ups has to get serious and guickly we only have tuesday and thursday scheduled this week and steve pocztowski was quoted in the chicago sun times as saying we are done with ups at 430pm thursday july 31st.

I also heard from my brother that the big-wigs from Atlanta are coming up here to do the negotiations. So hopefully that's a good sign.

#837 Re: All About Chris » All you IMDb jerks out there » 27 Jul 08 :: 01:20

I really think they thought the message boards were a good idea when they began. A place where fans of film/TV & stars could have rational discussions about those. But with poor rules, crappy moderation and juvenile users it has turned into nothing less than a joke.

A line I hate is when people say "This isn't a fan board, it's a discussion board."

This is often used by those that have nothing good to say about anything. I'm fine with someone saying their peace about someone/something once or twice, but when it's just constant and basically they become obsessed with putting those things down, including those that like it/them that I have the major problem with.

#838 Re: All About Chris » All you IMDb jerks out there » 27 Jul 08 :: 00:21

I would really like if IMDB would forbid threadcrapping.

In case you don't know what threadcrap is, here is a definition from the dvdtalk forum.

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=214035

What is a threadcrap?

A "threadcrap" is a term we've come to use here at DVD Talk for a post (usually negative) that is off the topic of the thread in which it is posted, or criticizes/ridicules the thread starter or the thread itself. Threadcraps usually have no reasoning behind them, but this is not always the case. This definition is not meant to be all inclusive, but it is meant to give you a general idea of what the term means. Ultimately, the moderators hold the final word on what is or is not a threadcrap.

Can you give me an example?

One commonly seen threadcrap is someone posting that "___________ is a crappy song/artiste" in a thread dedicated to information about the CD/concert etc. The point of the thread isn't really to discuss the quality of the artiste, but to discuss the CD/concert etc

Another commonly seen threadcrap is quoting someone else's post and saying "that's a stupid thing to say." If you think someone's wrong, point out the correct information or provide your interpretation of events without attacking the other person.

What's the big deal about threadcraps?

The purpose of the DVD Talk Forum is discussion. Threadcraps interfere with the flow of discussion. Something that goes against the purpose of the forum and rudely interrupts a discussion between members has no place on this forum.

What should I do if I think I see a threadcrap?

1. Don't reply to it with a snide (or otherwise) remark. Although it's often fun , it just leaves more for moderators to clean up afterwards. And since it's a reply to an off-topic comment, the reply itself is probably off-topic, so it doesn't belong in the thread either.

2. Do click on the "Report this post to a moderator" link that is in the post. An e-mail will be sent the moderators of the forum, and they will decide on what action to take. This could be anywhere from nothing (if the post is actually on-topic) to a suspension or banning (for repeat offenders), or anything in between.

------------------------------

Appendix

What do I do if I feel that one of my posts was wrongly deleted as a threadcrap?

1. Don't post about it in the thread. It's possible that the moderator who deleted your post will never read that thread again, so he won't see your concern and/or complaint. In addition, if the first post wasn't off topic, this second post about the first post definitely is.

2. If you'd like, do e-mail that moderator directly about the post. You are much, much more likely to get a response if you send an e-mail to the moderator.

I see it all the time on IMDB. Someone will post about some artist's cd or movie and instead of discussing that, they'll bash the singer or actor instead of discussing the cd or movie.

I also hate it when people bash other IMDB users instead of offering their opinion about the person, music or movie (or whatever) and start bashing the person for liking something they don't. I see it quite a bit on movie forums where someone will post their opinion about the movie and you'll get someone that calls that persons IQ, education, mentality or downright call them stupid, moronic or the like.

Now of course IMDB would never even consider putting such a ban into effect, as we know they just have so much work to do. Such as put up wrong info into a film's profile instead of monitoring their message boards.

COMIC-CON 2008: 'Fanboys' Restored

I had a spy in Thursday's Star Wars awards show for fan films, and part of the program was devoted to FANBOYS. This is the pic that had Star Wars fans upset because The Weinstein Company wanted to remove the sentimental primary plotline, about a kid with cancer whose last wish is to see Star Wars Episode I before he dies. The pic's producer brought on stage was Kevin Spacey, who said the movie has been restored to its original form, the cancer plotline returned, and all this was due to the power of committed fans. Nobody on stage mentioned the Weinstein name -- but Spacey did say the fans had defeated The Dark Side...

So my brother maybe going on strike. He works for UPS in the Chicago area and belongs to Local 705. The local contract expires on July 31st and they may strike the following day. In case you are wondering, the local contract is separate from the national which was approved earlier this year. They (UPS) wants to cut insurance benefits and give really small raises. Like 15 cents every 6 months for the first year of the contract and eliminate the COLA.

This would be his very first strike and has no idea how much the teamsters would pay in weekly benefits.

So if you hear of a UPS strike in the Chicago area, you perhaps hears it here first.

Local 705 UPSers Authorize Strike

July 21, 2008: More than three thousand Local 705 members turned out to the union hall on Sunday to participate in a vote to authorize a strike against UPS.

Five hundred members were lined up at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday when the doors opened to start the voting. Balloting continued until 5 p.m. Members voted to authorize a strike should one be necessary by an overwhelming margin of 2,993 to 232.

Bargaining will resume on Tuesday and Thursday this week. The Local 705 UPS contract is independent of the national agreement and covers more than 10,000 UPS Teamsters in the Chicago area. The contract expires at midnight on July 31.

Members of Teamsters Local 705, the second-largest local union in the country with about 11,000 members, authorized a strike Sunday, July 20 effective Aug. 1.

A strike would send UPS drivers, package handlers and other union employees to the picket lines, leaving thousands of packages in the Chicago area, bordering states and possibly even nationwide undelivered.

Steve Pocztowski, secretary treasurer for the Local 705, said he expects to be on strike Aug. 1. He said his group gave UPS a full proposal June 9, and UPS has done nothing to make a deal, and the strike vote, with nearly 93 percent (2,993 of 3,225) in favor of a strike hopefully showed UPS how serious they are.

"There is not one serious thing that they've done," he said regarding the negotiations.

Norman Black, spokesperson for UPS in Atlanta, said he expects it to be business as usual at the beginning of August.

"We are absolutely confident that we will negotiate a deal that is good for the company, our employees and our customers," Black said.

UPS hubs in Illinois include locations in Addison, Bedford Park, Chicago, Decatur, Franklin Park, Hodgkins, Northbrook, Palatine, Rockford and Rock Falls.

Pocztowski said if union members strike Aug. 1, he will extend an offer to various other major hubs to join in on the strike, including New York, New Jersey, Boston and Los Angeles.

ebertroeper.jpg

UPDATE: Ugh. The retooled Ebert & Roeper show premiering September 6th will be co-hosted by Ben & Ben -- a Generation Why duo who only got the gig due to nepotism. Ben Lyons is the nobody son of Jeffrey Lyons, the film critic world's biggest hack and quote whore with zero credibility, while Ben Mankiewicz is the slacker host on Turner Classic Movies, whose only claim to fame is that he's a watered-down member of the famous film family. Now, there's a working definition of the death of film criticism for you.

siskelebert.jpg It's not really a surprise that Disney-ABC Domestic Television finally decided to take At The Movies "in a new direction". Except for the old Siskel & Ebert show, there's never been a successful talk show about film on TV. Because people would rather watch movies than hear others yakking about them. Plus, the Internet provides so much more resource material to moviegoers that TV soundbites just don't cut it anymore. And now even amateur bloggers consider themselves qualified film critics, while the quality film reviewers find their print forums disappearing. It's also been a while since a "Thumbs Up" meant anything to the movie biz when studios can buy Web raves with a bribe or two. Ebert has fought various health challenges, Roeper plans to co-host another review show, and At The Movies as we knew it is kaput in mid-August. Sadly, I expect the next incarnation will involve more hairspray and toadying than criticism.

I guess that's one movie review show I won't be watching.

A good idea is to post the caps at photobucket, click on more options, then there is an option to "scramble filenames so nobody can guess your links". Then click on Save, than upload as usual.
