I could've went to seen this movie because I got 3 free tickets in that Speed Racer DVD I bought from Target and I still didn't go and see it.

I just hate the movie going experience that much. Too many annoying things occur in the theater that ruin it for me.

Thanks guys. Hopefully, somehow your thoughts do some good. I'm sure if he knew he would be thankful.

#1058 Re: Chris On Screen » Miscellaneous Stuff » 16 May 08 :: 17:35

I was just wondering if you guys ever tried playing the "Six Degree's of Kevin Bacon" with Chris and see whom you can link him to?

#1059 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 14 May 08 :: 23:24

I highly doubt I'll see him again.

The guy I am renting from is the one who went to see him in the hospital and was much closer to him than I was friendship wise. He talked it over with my roommates friends & family and agreed that no one can take care of him full time, so he is packing up his stuff and is going to store it away at a friends house. After that he's going to start looking for another roommate to replace him.

It seems harsh I know, but I can understand their position. They have their lives to live and can't take care of him for the rest of his life. I have no idea how good his health insurance is, but I'm sure this is going to get expensive very fast. So I don't think they can do it financially either.

I really hope that he recovers and all, he is a nice guy and didn't need for this to happen.

Got an update on my roommate and it's not good. He had a massive stroke and is paralyzed on one side and is in ICU. He just opened his eyes yesterday. His outcome doesn't look too good and will likely become a ward of the state.

So here it is.

Looks like you were right Deb.

California's highest court ruled that a prosecutor who helped in the making of "Alpha Dog" may remain on the death penalty case on which the film is based.

In the "Alpha Dog" case, an appeals court had removed Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen after he turned over probation reports, police files and other sensitive materials to director Nick Cassavetes.

"Alpha Dog," a fictionalized account of the killing of a Southern California teen starring Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Justin Timberlake, was released last year.

Prosecutors accuse Jesse James Hollywood of masterminding a plot to kidnap and murder 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz in 2000 because the teenager's older half brother owed Hollywood a $1,200 drug debt. Four people have already been convicted in the case, including triggerman Ryan Hoyt, who was sentenced to death.

Zonen said in court documents he aided Cassavetes with "Alpha Dog" to help publicize the hunt for Hollywood, who was captured in 2005 in Brazil after spending nearly five years on the lam.

Hollywood's lawyer, James Blatt, claimed Zonen -- who was not paid by the filmmakers -- acted unethically in giving confidential documents to Cassavetes and that "Alpha Dog" unfairly demonized his client in the eyes of potential jurors.

The California Supreme Court unanimously ruled Monday that a trial judge in Santa Barbara correctly concluded that Zonen's behavior didn't warrant removal.

"This is not to say that Zonen can or should escape censure," Justice Kathryn Werdegar wrote. "We find his acknowledged actions in turning over his case files without so much as an attempt to screen them for confidential information highly inappropriate and disturbing."

Still, Werdegar said kicking Zonen off the case was too harsh of a punishment because he appeared to be motivated solely by a desire to capture Hollywood.

"While Hollywood disputes that conclusion, it is supported by substantial evidence," Werdegar wrote.

Blatt said he was disappointed in the ruling and was considering an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"This sends a negative message. I don't think he can be fair," he said.

Blatt said no trial date was scheduled pending the outcome of the appeal. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Hollywood, who is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Zonen couldn't be reached for comment Monday, and District Attorney Christie Stanley didn't immediately return a phone call.

Speaking of Cloverfield, I posted what I thought of the film in the Cloverfield thread.

#1066 Re: Square Eyes » Speed Racer discussion » 13 May 08 :: 23:02

Not defending what they did, but I believe Paramount did the same thing with Iron Man last week when they said it made $100 million when it actually made 98.6 million.

See I never allow critics reviews to sway me either way. I pretty much know what kind of films I like or don't. I don't really like mysteries, sports films so I rarely see them. To me they are almost always the same. Once I know "who did it" in a mystery it doesn't interest me anymore so it doesn't have much repeat value to me. And sports films are almost always the same story, the team/person loses some game/sport, there is someone who gives a big pep-talk, they practice some and eventually win the big game in the finale. Boring to me.

I tend to like action, adventure, science fiction and comedies the most.

Really my interest in seeing Speed Racer was seeing the Mach 5, to me it's an iconic tv car along the same vain as the Batmobile, Kitt, General Lee and other tv cars.

Perhaps another reason it flopped was that it was released too soon after Iron Man. Perhaps earlier in the Spring or later in the Summer would have been better.

Is anyone collection the Speed Racer toys. I've already got most of the 1/64 scale Hot Wheel cars, 2 of the Pull-Back cars (Mach 5 & 6), the larger Mach 5 with Speed action figure, the real large Mach 5 with sounds from the movie, and 2 of the McDonald's cars (Mach 5 and the Racer X Race Car). So lets see I think I've spent about $55 on toys.

In case anyone is interested in the McDonald's cars, they are about the same size as the Hot Wheels Pull-Back toys but are a little less detailed, but over 1/2 the price of the Hot Wheels versions.

Gas is now $4.08 a gallon here.

I can only imagine what downtown Chicago is paying.

#1068 Re: Chris On Screen » SPOILERS!!! Discuss GRADUATION here!!! » 13 May 08 :: 18:36

Saw the dvd at Walmart today. Can't recall the price.

DVDempire doesn't have the back cover art up yet and nobody has posted an update for the dvd yet on the dvdprofiler site, so I can't show the back artwork yet.

#1069 Re: Square Eyes » Speed Racer discussion » 13 May 08 :: 13:24

It looks like it bombed at the box-office. Making only 18.56 million.

I guess there are several reasons.

1. Kids likely don't even know what Speed Racer is and likely just looks like a video-game to them.
2. No big stars in it to draw in the audience.
3. Too many changes from the cartoon. Racer X's car is different than the cartoon version. The addition of the Mach 6 may have confused some into thinking the Mach 5 wasn't in the film. Speed's costume is different as well. (Could be more, just going by the trailer)
4. Adults too embarrassed to go see a kids film. Some single adults would likely be embarrassed to go see a kids film alone.
5. Teenagers didn't really grow up with Speed Racer except for re-runs on cable, which is very different then growing up watching it on regular broadcast tv in the late 60's/ early 70's. So teenagers didn't really have much interest in it either.
6. Brothers back-lash. Perhaps there was a back-lash/boycott from those that didn't like the 2 Matrix sequels.

I could care less that it bombed. I know I will buy it on dvd when it's released in the fall.

High court lets prosecutor remain on 'Alpha Dog' case
The Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 05/12/2008 10:24:23 AM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO—The state's high court says a Santa Barbara deputy district attorney who helped in the making of the movie "Alpha Dog" can stay on the real-life death penalty case the film is based on.

A lower court removed Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen from the case after he turned over probation reports, police files and other sensitive materials to director Nick Cassavetes.

The California Supreme Court unanimously ruled Monday that Zonen can be reinstated on the case of Jesse James Hollywood. The defendant is accused of masterminding a plot to kidnap and kill 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz in 2000 because the teenager's older half brother owed Hollywood a $1,200 drug debt.

"Alpha Dog" is a fictionalized account of the case that stars Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Justin Timberlake.

A little sad news.

My roommate had a stroke yesterday. They took him to one hospital then airlifted him to another.

I have no idea how severe it really is yet. All I know is that he's still in the hospital.

He's only in his 30's.

Oh, so sad to hear that the Mach 5 gets destroyed. But at least the Mach 5 is in most of the film.

#1075 Re: Square Eyes » Speed Racer discussion » 09 May 08 :: 00:31

Oh ok.

I have a few other questions.

I'll try to be as general as I can.

As far as I can see from the trailers there are 3 Mach cars.

1. A Red Mach 4
2. The more famous white Mach 5 (kind of looks like a 1950's car with fins)
3. The more advanced white Mach 6

OK, what is the deal with the Mach 4 and who drives it?

How much is the Mach 5 in the film?
Same thing for the Mach 6.

Are the races hard to follow at times? In general are the races shown close up or so far away that the cars are too small to make out and follow who is who?

In the cartoon there was many car crashes that resulted in obvious deaths, does that happen as well in the film.

And one last question, do they use the original theme song from the cartoon in the film at all, if so did they change it at all to "update" it?

If you can't answer that's ok.
