#151 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 27 May 09 :: 21:22

So Star Trek is now #3 on the Star Trek domestic box office chart (when adjusted for inflation)

1. The Motion Picture $239.1
2. The Voyage Home $212.3
3. Star Trek (2009) $193.0
4. Wrath of Khan $192.3
5. Search for Spock $163.2
6. First Contact $149.5
7. Generations $130.0
8. Undiscovered Country $127.7
9. Insurrection $107.5
10. Final Frontier $94.0
11. Nemesis $53.4

It'll very likely take the #2 position by the end of this coming weekend. And when all is said and done, could be near or above The Motion Picture domestic total and possibly take the #1 spot as well.

Wow, such a shame about the Trek artwork. Losing out on those good poster artwork.

For comparison, here is the U.S. collectors edition of Nemesis.

Or The Voyage Home

Oh well, what you're going to do? Still the movie is the most important part anyways.

#153 Re: Square Eyes » Post your recent DVD purchases » 27 May 09 :: 18:19

Question about those Star Trek dvds.

Do they come with a slipcover?
It looks like it slips in from the side.
Are the dvds in a keep case (plastic standard cases) or a digipack(plastic holders glued to paper)?
Do you get the complete artwork or is it as shown in the pics you posted, just a sliver?

Hey, once you watch Hostel II, is it still the 'Unseen Edition'?:lol:

#154 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Road Trippin' » 27 May 09 :: 15:45

I haven't really read this thread lately.

But back in the early 1980's I went on a school field trip to Washington D.C.. Took a plane over there. My first plane trip, and last one as well.

Went on a tour of the White House, the Smithsonian and the U.S. Treasury. Very cool, especially the Smithsonian with all the planes and then the Treasury to see how they make the money.

Was supposed to tour the Capitol, but for whatever reason that didn't occur. But the entire class group had our picture taken on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building.

Also saw the monuments. I don't think we could go up in the Washington Monument because they were working on it or something.

Back then there was no WWII monument at all, but that looks interesting to see.

Also went to Williamsburg and Jefferson's Monticello.

The real bummer was that I took a ton of pictures, but the film went through the X-Ray machine and ruined them. So all I have is memories.

But I do agree with you about Chicago. It's a crowded city. That's why I don't go into Chicago unless it's on business, which isn't likely anymore. I just don't like crowds.

#155 Re: Square Eyes » Welcome to the Whedonverse (Buffy/Angel/Etc Appreciation) » 26 May 09 :: 16:31

Buffy the series was better than the film.

Much like how the Alien Nation series was better than the movie.

But if you're going to have the original director than what is the point?
Not only did the series improve upon the idea of the film, it expanded the world and had a much better cast than the movie did.
Now unless they have SMG in it, then perhaps but otherwise it seems like a bloodless attempt to try and reboot the film series.

#157 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 22 May 09 :: 22:00

It was Star Trek day for me today.

1st my brother brought over a complete set of Burger King glasses which he got from a friend for free.
2nd, we went to Burger King for lunch and got all the remaining toys to complete my set.
3rd I went to Walmart and bought the Star Trek: The Animated Series for $14.96. Which I haven't seen since the early 70's.

The BK toys I got today were:
2 Original Spocks
U.S.S. Kelvin
2 Klingon Battlecruisers
Hoverbike
Communicator

Yup, 7 bucks on BK toys.

So now I have a complete set of BK toys with a few extras.
And two complete sets of the BK glasses.

#159 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 20 May 09 :: 19:43

A few of these things have been brought up before, I'll try to answer them as best as I can remember.

1) Kirk finding Spock on Delta Vega (the ice planet). How much of a coincidence is it that Kirk is chased by two human-hungry monsters, survives it without so much as a scratch and *then* runs into the one cave where Spock has taken residence??? I'm sorry, but that's just a little too much of a stretch.

A. Even though it's an alternate reality, some have brought up that it has to do something with how the universe is trying to correct itself and that even in this alternate reality that's their destiny to together as a crew. So that's why Kirk meets up with Spock Prime so that he can beam back to the Enterprise and become Captain as he is meant to be.

2) Nero drilling into earth. So the drill is attached to the ship with a long, unprotected metal chain. Spock severs it by simply flying by and shooting at it. Why is it that no one else had the same idea before? Starfleet must have had at least a dozen ships at their disposal who could have just fired upon the damn thing. Also, uh, same thing about drilling into Vulcan before.

A:
According to the prequel books the Narada has Borg technology which very likely makes it almost indestructable and able to repair itself. I don't know for sure, but since Spock's Jellyfish ship is from the future as well that it's possible that it was outfitted with specialized weapons to neutralize Borgified things.

The only thing that bothered me about the monster on Delta Vega was WHY THE HELL WAS IT RED???  Bright red predators would not have evolved on a solid white ice planet.

A:
Just because we see it red does mean that other creatures do. Perhaps other creatures see red as the same color as the ice and snow on that planet.

Also, how would a fur-less monster survive on an ice planet? It doesn't make sense that the thing was just bare skin and bones.

A:
Perhaps it has unique blood or is biologically able to withstand brutally cold temps.

Did you see the Tribble in the scene where we first see Scotty?

A:
I heard it, but never saw it.

I've been collecting the Burger King stuff.

Got a complete set of the glasses and most of the toys.

I got Chekov today, and boy is he short.

All I need now is the following to complete the toy set.
Original Spock
USS Kelvin
Warbird
Hover Bike
Communicator

#164 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 13 May 09 :: 16:20

Now that I've seen it I've read some posts on other message boards.

What I see is that some think it's a slap in the face to fans because it erases everything that was "canon".

Like Deb said about Race to Witch Mountain, those still exist. You can watch them anytime they want to. It's not like they're going to come to people's homes and erase all of their videos.

I don't know if people have a hard time grasping alternate realities or what. But up till the events in this movie, those events did take place. In a way they still do exist but in an alternate timeline. Now we are seeing the effects that time travel can have and from now on we are seeing an alternate timeline.

This opens up entirely new possibilities in terms of story's. They could adapt tv episodes into movies. Or they could come up with entirely new story's.

Even years down the road they could come up with new adventures of the Next Generation. New Enterprise D, entirely new cast which opens up even more story's that could involve Q, the Borg and the Cardassians.

I agree with one person who said that Star Trek had the weight of 40+ years of cannon to follow. Basically it hindered them. By coming up with an alternate timeline they can basically do whatever they want to now. They have so much freedom now that they didn't have a few years ago.

I can't wait for the sequel.

#165 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 13 May 09 :: 09:42

My review:

Which may contain spoilers.

Acting:
All of the primary actors do an excellent job. But I'll go one by one.

Chris Pine: Really fine job making the character of Kirk his very own. In the end he became Kirk.

Zachary Quinto: Another fine job. From the very beginning he was Spock. He got it down pat.

Eric Bana: Even though the character isn't too well written, his portrayal is very good.

Bruce Greenwood: Terrific performance. Shows what a captain should be like.

Karl Urban: Great performance.

Zoe Saldana: Good performance overall. Very spunky.

Simon Pegg: Ok as Scotty. Accent very good, but just a tad too comedic.

John Cho: Ok as Sulu, but the script didn't give him really too much to do.

Anton Yelchin: Good as Chekov. Accent is jsut as good as the original's.

Directing:
Overall good, but way too much extreme closeups and use of lens flares. One example is the closeup
of Nero filling about half the screen. The use of lens flares was also done too much and took away
from certain scenes.

Sound:
Great sound and the use of it. Like when the Kelvin is being attacked and one person is blown out
into space and there is no sound.

Costume Design:
Excellent. Kept the basics of the TOS but updated them.

Visual Effects:
The best of the series.

Story:
Ok, there are some plot holes. But what films don't.
But overall the story was a good revenge film, even though the revenge aspect was misguided.

Action:
The most action in a Trek film ever. And also the best action as well.

The overall message.
Now Trek films usually have a message, for me it's the relationship between parents and their child.
And how the death of one can affect the childs life. Kirks loss of his father at his birth made him
unguided and cocky, that is until someone who knew his father changed his life. While Spock grew up
with his parents, the sudden death of his mother affected him greatly, not only that but the loss of
his home planet and billions of his race.

Both parallel each other, but eventually need each other. In a way the Enterprise crew becomes their
new family.

My final verdict.
It's certainly one the best Trek films ever and one of the better science fiction films too. Full of
action as well as emotion, heroic as well as touching. It's completely accessible to fans and
non-fans alike. This Trek 'warps' what was Star Trek into an action-packed, emotionally charged
blockbuster and opens up an entire new world of adventures for the legendary Enterprise and her
crew.

Overall grade: A-

#166 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 13 May 09 :: 00:52

I saw the film today.

Great film, one of the best Trek films ever.

I think there are only two scenes that I don't like at all.

1. Young Kirk stealing the car and crashing it off the cliff while some lousy(imo) rock song plays.
2. Young Spock getting into a fight after taking a test.

Both of those scenes I didn't care for and I don't think added much to the storyline.

My favorite FX shots.
The first reveal of the Enterprise at Space Dock.
The departure of the Enterprise from Space Dock
The arrival of the Enterprise at Vulcan and trying to avoid the debris of the ships.
The departure of the shuttle from the Enterprise
The pan out from the bridge to the outside of the Enterprise
The Enterprise coming out of warp with weapons firing to destroy the missiles fired at Spock's ship
The final shot of the Enterprise
And my favorite, yet simple shot is the Enterprise coming out of the moons atmosphere.

I'll post later on my thoughts about the rest of the film.

Anchor Bay hits 'Open Road'
Picks up theatrical and home video rights to the dramedy

By Steven Zeitchik

May 11, 2009, 03:00 AM ET
Anchor Bay is hitting the road, picking up theatrical and home video rights to Michael Meredith family dramedy "The Open Road."

Wim Wenders exec produced the film, which unfolds over the course of a road trip that a grown son takes with his estranged father, a former baseball star. The pair travel from Ohio to Houston to see the son's mother, from whom the baseball star is also estranged, in the hospital..

Justin Timberlake stars as the son and Jeff Bridges as his father, with Mary Steenburgen playing the mother/wife. Odd Lot Entertainment and Perfect Weekend produced the pic.

Writer-director Meredith found inspiration for the script in his relationship with his own father, the former football star Don Meredith.

Anchor Bay, the Liberty Media division that specializes in DVD as well as limited theatrical releases, has been busy on the acquisitions front lately, scooping up rights to fest titles such as "Bart Got a Room" and the Ashton Kutcher Sundance pic "Spread."

It aims to open "Road" this summer.

International #'s are now in.

Variety is now also reporting that Star Trek brought it an additional $35.5 Million in 54 overseas markets.

Specifically the big countries for Star Trek were: the U.K. with $8.8 million, Germany with $4.6 million, Australia with $3.4 million, France with $2.8 million, Russia with $2.3 million, South Korea with $2.2 million and Spain with $1.6 million.

For a worldwide total so far of $112M.

If ST can earn close to or around $200M and about half that from international, then the total worldwide could be close to if not over $300M.
Which would make it the highest ww grossing Trek film ever, even taking inflation into account.

#170 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 10 May 09 :: 23:52

I think ST will pass $100M by either Wednesday or Thursday. Wednesday if it has smaller % drops than usual.

By next weekend the total should be around $126-$131M

Now I have seen a movie on DVD that I would call garbage, and that's The Beast from Yucca Flats. Just terrible beyond words. In case anyone doesn't know about it, it stars that very large guy from Plan 9 from Outer Space who gets radiated by an atomic bomb and starts killing people. The entire film made no sense and they had a very hard time finding or escaping from him even though he just walked around.

#171 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 10 May 09 :: 20:18

I actually recorded last nights SNL because JT was on it.

So recorded some of those ST spots and Burger King spots too.

I didn't even know that they were going to be on last night, so that was a pleasant surprise.

#172 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 10 May 09 :: 20:15

I was close though with my estimate that Wolverine would drop 65%.

For me the entire X-Men/ Wolverine thing is starting to get old really fast. Now I'm still interested in seeing Wolverine, but I can wait till the dvd.

By the way Star Trek has now obtained the highest opening weekend gross of any Trek film in history. And that's even taking inflation into account.

With inflation taken into account First Contact was the previous holder of that with a weekend take of Star Trek: First Contact (1996): $49,896,339.

To become the highest grossing Trek film ever, with inflation taken into account, ST would have to gross more than Star Trek: The Motion Picture with a total domestic take of $239,115,674.

Figures from http://boxoffice.com/featured_stories/2 … f-trek.php

#173 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 10 May 09 :: 19:56

Final estimated weekend take.

$76.5M

Breakdown as follows:
Thursday Pre-Midnight $4M, Friday $26.8M, Saturday $27.4M, Sunday estimate $18.3M.

Wolverine dropped a whopping 68%.

Star Trek passed Fast & Furious as the 2nd biggest opening of 2009.

#174 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 10 May 09 :: 00:35

As of right now it's estimated weekend take is around 72 million, which is terrific news.

With Wolverine likely to drop to around 30 million, which is around a 65% drop, I think you're going to see a drop in theaters carrying the film. With Trek being the number 1 film this weekend those theaters will likely go to either Trek or Angels & Demons.

Now I have zero interest in A&D and never even seen the Davinci Code, but I'm assuming that those really interested in seeing that film is likely older than those interested in seeing either Trek or Wolverine.

Next weekend I think will be very close, but with the declining interest in Wolverine & the word of mouth getting around it's likely it'll drop around 40-55%, which would be a take of around 18 million.

Trek should have a smaller drop than Wolverine just had. Excellent reviews, terrific word of mouth it should have a drop no larger than 50%. I really think it may only drop about 44%. If that holds true than next weekends take would be around 39 million.

Now will A&D have a greater take than 39 million?
Code opened to 77 million, but I don't think this one will even come close to making 77 million. But it will be #1.
I think closer to 55-65 million.

So I think next week top 3 will be:
1. Angels & Demons
2. Star Trek
3. Wolverine

Then the following week is Terminator, which will take audiences away from both Wolverine & Trek, but the question is how much. I'm hearing fans are not liking that it's rated PG-13, the director and some of the clips they've seen.

But regardless I think Trek, Terminator & to a lesser extent Wolverine will be able to have some legs through most of June because there really doesn't seem to be any must see films released until Transformers 2.
