My blogging pal Gary Sassaman didn't like Fanboys !
Two German reviews from the screening at the film festival in Switzerland:

Both say the movie is entertaining and funny but nothing near greatness, the second one gave it a 3 out of 5. The first one says about Chris: "[...] die Hauptfigur benimmt sich wie eine Parodie auf John Cusacks Standardfigur" (the lead character acts like a parody of John Cusack's standard character), whatever that means. But there we have another John Cusack reference.

Chris has always reminded me of John Cusack. They should play father/son some day.
I just accidentally ran across Lukas Haas's MySpace page. His music is really good. I had no idea he played. Hope he friends me.
"The Pin" is in a band ?
Something really insanely terrible would have to happen in this country for her --- or any republican at this point --- to become president next go 'round. I just hope if she starts giving speeches we don't have nutballs out there screaming for people to kill Obama again. Her followers can be awfully scary.
I post on another board where some of my fellow boarders (I can't think of the right word) are rabidly conservative, and regularly post really stupid jokes, and occasionally nasty stuff about President Obama. My psychiatrist was telling me about a good friend of his who wants to see Obama dead (he said that other than wishing death on the President, his good friend, a Mormon, is basically sane). I can't fathom why certain types dislike Obama, who strikes me as a decent guy who genuinely is doing his best for the country.
Oh yeah, while volunteering at the local food bank yesterday, I spoke with a customer who was/is convinced that Obama is the Anti-Christ, and that we will all be goners in the year 2012.
Nutty is not the word.
Who is? But the reviews of the movie have been really great and it won the Made In NYC Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. People have also said Chris is excellent and very memorable in it. In any event, it'll be way better than Remember The Daze, right?
What I can recommend is Graduation, American Gun, Alpha Dog, Just Friends and The Girl Next Door.
Remember the Daze, despite the plethora of eye candy, was terrible. What made it even worse for me was its aping of the brilliant Dazed and Confused. I have avoided Alpha Dog because I hate seeing white kids acting like they're "gangstas," which seemed to be the whole point of the bits of Alpha Dog that I have seen.
I love Crispin Glover. That guy's nutz. Did you happen to see the remake of Willard, Shell? As a fan of the original (and Bruce Davison in general), I was skeptical. But because it was a Morgan & Wong movie and Crispin played lead, I had to check it out. The DVD is great fun. There's a very cool documentary on there for anyone who likes Crispin or Morgan & Wong or Kristen Cloke, who was originally supposed to play the female lead, but she got pregnant. Since she's Mrs. Glen Morgan she was onset almost every day and the documentary therefore has the effect of a Morgan family home movie. It's a hoot. Everyone just really seemed to have fun with it.
I have never even seen the original Willard; rats skeeve me out.
I watched it last night. It was nowhere near as entertaining as the original, which was released nearly thirty years ago !! I know that I probably shouldn't like "slasher" movies, but I did always enjoy seeing them with a large crowd (at a movie theatre, natch), where people would be shouting at the screen and jumping occasionally, although most Friday the 13th films are not scary at all, just goofy. Still, I like them, and a few pretty decent actors have appeared in them. Kevin Bacon, for example, and the demented Crispin Glover.
Followed up by some typical condescension. Welcome, Shelly!:)
Just for the record, I'm a dude :dancing:
Yeah, rough day in showbiz. But hey, at least maybe this will be one night I don't have to see Sheephead on Entertainment Tonight.
Sheephead ?
Peter Weller was in The Poseidon Adventure with
Matt Rippy who was in Day of the Dead with
Michael Welch who was in JOA with ...
Joe Spinell
I don't remember my Blue Blaze Irregular name, but I had one. And so did my best friend, Dave. We went to Atlanta Fantasy Fair a year before the movie came out and attended a panel where they handed out red & orange headbands like Buckaroo wears and I was a total sucker. We went to see the movie on opening weekend and there was like 6 people in there besides us. Uh oh. Not good. But I never stopped loving it and I've always owned a copy one way or another, from VHS to the cool DVD. Thankfully, Buckaroo grew a cult following over the years. My other best friend, Steph loves it too. All the best people do, right? LOL!
Who's your favorite character? We're big Rawhide fans.
I had one of those red & orange headbands and sold it on eBay for something like $50 !
I also like Rawhide, and New Jersey, too.
Heehee. You obviously rock, Shell, just even knowing that.
I am a Blue Blaze Irregular, actually. My handle is "Mando Baxter".
I have not watched Buckaroo Banzai in ages, but its one of my all-time favourites.
Past time for a thread about this show.
Cool news, Lord John Whorfin is joining the cast!
Laugh while you can, monkey boy !
A good idea.
But it also smells of trying to boost the viewership by including blockbusters and the like.
Of course that's why they're doing it. "The Dark Knight" was snubbed last year, and I think that it totally deserved to be nominated for Best Picture.
I don't think that I have even seen five films that I would consider "Best Picture" worthy this year.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced in a small blurb the Oscars this year will be bumping their Best Picture nominees from five to ten beginning with the upcoming 2010 Oscars President Sid Ganis announced today at a press conference in Beverly Hills.
"After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year," said Ganis. "The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009."
The move is an obvious response to the recent discussion concerning The Dark Knight's absence from the nominees for more art house style films such as The Reader and I would expect we can now look at Up as a serious contender for a Best Picture nominee when previous Pixar favorites Ratatouille and Wall-e were left in the cold.
"Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize," commented Ganis. "I can't wait to see what that list of ten looks like when the nominees are announced in February."
Are you talking about my signature? It's from Hair. I love that song. I never get it out of my head once I listened to it. LOL
The "fireplace" version of the video for that song:
I quite like this site.
It's de-lovely
Your "sig" line is one of my fave goofy songs. Whatever became of Oliver ?
I don't mind "special effects" movies at all, but I do prefer movies that are about something.
An example of a movie that I really enjoyed (but wasn't that successful) is the wonderful "Searching for Bobby Fisher," which affects me emotionally every single time that I see it.
I think it has something to do with the father/son dynamic. I would rather watch that movie over and over than watch, say, a "Transformers" movie.
I was a "Sheldon" long before The Big Bang Theory chap was :dancing:
Most people call me just "Shell":D
I'm Sheldon, a fan of Joan of Arcadia, and I also like CM, but I am more partial to Amber Tamblyn.
That said, I never watched The Unusuals.
I have always liked "teen/adult angst" stuff (Degrassi, My So-Called Life, Relativity, Once and Again, et al), and I think that Joan of Arcadia should have been allowed a third season.
I just added that one to my Netflix queue. For the record, I am not a fan of Fred Durst.
I think that the opening number (which I love) with Kate Capshaw & company doing "Anything Goes" kinda sets the stage for the outrageous antics that follow in "Temple of Doom".
That is the oddest looking Mad Hatter that I've ever seen. Makes David Wayne's version look normal.
I really didn't care for Indy IV. Maybe its because I'm an old guy now (damned near 50). I found the first three films far better, and think that "Temple of Doom" has always been unfairly maligned. I really like that one.
