I think you're talking about Anamorphic Widescreen AKA 16:9 Enhanced, etc.
Yes, dvds are issued in Widecreen that fills up a widescreen tv, that's what Anamorphic means. The machine decodes the signal and sends it to the tv in such a way to fill up as much as the available screen as possible. 1.85 aspect ratio films will basically fill up a widescreen tv screen, while a 2.35 or higher ratio film will still have black bars visible - unless you zoom in.
Of course anamorphic widescreen has no benefit for standard 4:3 aspect ratio tv owners. black bars will be visible on everything widescreen.
What do you mean by "Normal widescreen"?
By the way, it will be rated PG-13.

Sorry if old news.
Blu-ray is almost always released day-and-date with the regular dvd, so if this is correct info than the regular dvd would also be released on the same date.
I check dvd news site every day and none of them has any info on it yet.
OK; Just did a search and found this as well.
Retailers have begun to list Fanboys for a simultaneous DVD and Blu-ray Disc release on November 18. That date would put it day-and-date with the rumored Warner Brothers release date for Star Wars: The Clone Wars on DVD and Blu-ray, and only two months later than the theatrical release date of September 19.

Nope, don't have Blu-ray yet. But according to reports Blu-ray dvd sales will surpass regular dvd by 2012.
I will wait until the players come down in price before jumping on board. At least they're backwards compatible.

Some of the statements which are funny to read now.
About machines not being able to record
then the machine will be useless to them and a waste of money.
Just because DVD will have a (supposedly) better picture quality than VHS will play no part in their decision. it doesn't record, therefore, it is crippled and worth less than VHS
Point is moot since DVD Recorders are available.
Features
Also, DVD movies are supposed to have features such as multiple aspect ratios, and different languages and ratings and subtitles. There is really no true hope that any of these features will come to pass on general releases.
Huh, just about every movie on dvd has multiple languages & sub-titles. Some DVDs have Full Screen & Widescreen on the same disc.
Different Versions
And just where are these differing versions (read:ratings) of films going to come from? A director shoots a film, and in the vast majority of cases, the movie is finished at the rating the director aimed for. Additional scenes are not shot and edited to make differing rating versions of a film. Are the studios going to call back entire casts and crews to revise a film so they can produce a DVD version with differing ratings? If they don't, will the studio elect to do it themselves and edit without the directors approval? I don't think so... This argument alone is enough to shoot the whole "features" aspect of DVD right out the window.
This guy must never heard of Unrated Versions.
Rental
Availablitly of titles for rental is another area of concern. How many stores are going to stock DVD and take up selling space that could be better stocked with something else?
I seriously doubt that most stores will offer DVD for rent for longer than 2 months after the launch.
And where is VHS now in the rental chains?
Picture Quality
And now we get into THE most controversial aspect of the entire DVD debate. PICTURE QUALITY, or the lack there of.
Huh?
Mass Market suppy
and it is correct to ask whether or not the companies can make discs to the exacting standards required by DVD in the large quantities and speeds required by the mass market.
12 years later and they sure are doing a good job of supplying dvds for the mass market aren't they.
Destroy the market
I think it is going to destroy the market.
When it ultimately fails, they will lose hundreds of millions of dollars. Many companies, such as Sony, who have a recent history of product failures and are already struggling in a tough market, may be taken down from it and go out of business entirely or be forced to downsize and restrict their company to only a few select areas.
I guess it could of happened. But that prediction was completely opposite of what happened, they've made millions off dvd and continue to do so.
Bad idea
DVD is just a bad idea. It is being forced upon a uncaring and unwanted public and is an inferior product that simply isn't needed or desired.
Wow, inferior product??
Wasn't desired - by whom?
No New Content on these sets, just a re-packaging of the previous releases.
So no need to buy these at all.
Pics of Bumblebee on the set of Transformers 2
This new Corvette is supposed to be in the movie as well.
http://jalopnik.com/5034285/exclusive-t … gn-concept
That Corvette looks so cool.
$49.98 SRP on either set. November 4, 2008 release.
I already own the original trilogy 4 disc set, the prequel releases and the Limited Editions of the Original trilogy with the original versions.
Unless this has something really special I won't buy these.
Where are the deleted scenes from A New Hope? Which I've seen pics of on the net.
Will admit the coverart is really cool and all.
Just like you Deb, I only have a debit card.
Also I only buy from amazon.com and have never had a problem at all.
I am so glad I don't have credit card debt. Especially in this economy.
Doesn't Ebay own Pay-pal?
Which would answer why they want to do this, to increase their bottom line.
One person on their forum posted about a store who changed their policy and would only accept cash or credit card, no checks. And soon that store was bankrupt.
There are many people who don't trust putting out their credit card info on-line, don't have a credit card or just prefer to deal with a check or money-order as payment. Also with the current economy some can't get credit cards or their cards are maxed up so they send a check or money-order to buy stuff off e-bay.
Seems dumb to cut off those customers when I would think they would try to expand their customer base instead of scaring/ forcing these people away and thus downsizing their customer base.
Did you guys hear that E-Bay will force everybody to use credit cards to make purchases and use either pay-pal or similar services. Plus eliminating buyers ability to buy with check, cashier's check or money-orders.
I've visited their forums and sure looks like most people are against this, buyers & sellers alike.
I wonder how many people who only used checks/money-orders to buy stuff on e-bay will simply leave.
I know I will leave e-bay once this goes into effect.
Batman Begins is right.
CRT is correct.
Next one.
I just looked it up on the site I got it from and they don't have that cap anymore for the film that I wrote it down as.
Since it's so long ago I'll just tell you what I wrote it down from.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Either the site screwed up or I did, so it's either OFOTCN or As Good as it Gets.
Here is the next one.
This will give it away, but the film won a ton of Oscars.
Wow, no guesses on the Jack Nicholson one?
I've heard rumors that the dvd maybe released sometime in early December. A gift set may also be available with a replica of Batman's bike. Nothing confirmed yet.
As you know I wait to see all movies until it's on dvd, so I haven't read any posts in here so nothing gets spoiled for me.
I will buy the 1 disc edition since the Special Edition 2nd disc is nothing but the digital copy, which I have no use for.
I agree with you that Justin is a fairly good actor. Been a fan of his acting since AD. I will say that his best acting is a close tie between AD and Southland Tales. I really like his acting in the Southland Tales musical segment where even in a drugged out craze he goes from that to a symbol of self loathing and tragedy by the end of the song.
I own all of his films so far on DVD and will admit his worst film is Edison (Force), but I blame the writer/director for that more so than the actors.
Just in case anyone cares, here is the coverart for Chris's co-star Justin Timberlake's movie.
Blu-Ray
Here are some upcoming dvd sets that I'm looking forward to buying (if possible).
Finally could get rid of the barebones snapper version.
Glad I held off on buying this.
Probably my favorite Hitchock film.
Already own the complete series, would buy just for the case.
They are releasing a new Charmed set this fall.
The cheap set @ $247.99
The more expensive set @ $289.99
If I was really big fan of the show I would buy it. But I'm not, just a casual fan who's seen a few episodes, so very doubtful I would buy the complete series.
I've bought dvds off of ebay as well, some were used as well. Of course there was no way of knowing in some cases. Some were even ex-rentals with stickers on the case/dvd.
As you said there isn't anything you can do about it and kind of have to live with it.
I just mentioned about the dents and all regarding new dvds and that I pay close attention to it. Used is completely different case especially when buying off ebay as it's impossible to physically inspect it before buying.
Post dvd(s) that you own that are your most prized in your collection. IE: rare, OOP (Out of Print) or really neat special edition or packaging.
You can also add those that you wish you bought or hope to buy sometime in the future.
I am Legend Steelbook
The recalled version of Little Shop of Horrors with the B&W alternate ending intact.
Steelbook case
The Story of Star Wars: Walmart exclusive dvd
Mine came with a steel slipcover.
Total Recall in a metal Mars tin case
Transformers in a Optimus Prime transforming dvd case
I'm very picky about the cases.
Everything has to be perfect. No dents, scratches. I even shake the case to make sure the dvd isn't loose. I also look at the paper insert artwork to make sure that when I remove the security tape around the case that it won't ruin the artwork at all.
But of course that's for brand new dvds. If I buy something used I basically forgive it because it's usually such a bargain.
