That's really beautiful, Maria. Finland is one of the places I'd love to see in my lifetime, along with Sweden and Norway. I've never been to Scandinavia. I almost went to Jyväskylä in August on a business trip, but that fell through, unfortunately. I'd love to see the Northern Lights! Must be absolutely beautiful. Well, one day...

-TeeJay

Thanks for reminding me. big_smile I'm actually pretty poored at it all. :embarrassed: Dreaming of places far far away. Warm places. lol

My pics must make you all think Finland is just full of small towns but both of my home towns are in Lapland. Lapland was pretty sparsely populated to start with and the last couple of decades it has lost a lot of residents for lack of work. It's a shame really. Rovaniemi is the biggest city in Lapland. And I think that is the southest place to see the northern lights. The arctic circle is there too. And Santa! wink I'd actually love to move there. Always feels so magical to be there. lol That where my ex-bestfriend S lives now..

Um, some places that come to mind if you're planning a trip to Lapland.

* Sodankylä is best to visit at summertime. It's really beautiful then. And the sun won't set at all. And there's the the filmfest in june. Wintertime is pretty darn dark and depressing but if there's no clouds, you'll never see a clearer view of the stars and northern lights. If you're into nightlife there's few clubs and bars, pretty crowded in the weekends. There's two small skiing resorts in Sodankylä; one (Kommatti) is about 5km from the downtown, the other (Luosto) about 50km. In Luosto there's also a nice spa and hotel and amethyst mine. You can buy beautiful souvenirs in Sodankylä. big_smile

* Larger Skiing resorts are at Ylläs http://www.yllas.fi/?deptid=8951, Levi and Saariselkä. Each have spas too. I think Levi is the most popular and there's been a lot of development last few years. New hotels, cabins and such. Didn't find a good site about Levi and Saariselkä. There's also some smaller skiing resorts that I can't remember now. But Finnish skiing places are no Alps! Anyone who has skied at the Alps, most think these are all pretty tiny. lol

*Rovaniemi offers an urban view to lapland. That's where the main airport is. I think they're making flights to Levi too nowdays. At Rovaniemi there's also Arcticum (cool museum kind of thing), Santa Park (amusement park inside a mountain right at the arctic circle), and what else.. Well, here's a link: http://www.visitrovaniemi.fi/VisitRovan … nglish.iw3

* Oh, and some distance away from Rovaniemi there's a zoo called Ranua with lots of arctic animals. wink
There's another zoo called Ähtäri about 2-3 hours of driving from my home.

* Trains won't go norther than Rovaniemi. If you choose to use public transportation, there's lots of nice busses to sit in. for hours. roll Don't ever do that one with kids... wink Well, atleast the views are nice. big_smile
I think in the winter time there's a train from Kemi to Ylläs for the skiing people. I heard about it one year but don't know anything more about it.

* If you choose to come visit the lovely city of Tornio, You'll need to fly to Helsinki, fly a smaller plane to Kemi airport and then I can come pick you up. lol It's about an hour flight Helsinki-Kemi. By train that takes about 7-8 hours. Nice way to spend a day.. Some finnish sceenery. big_smile Lots of fields and woods. And cows and horses if you're lucky. big_smile
* Kemi is pretty dull. Just the huge snow castle in the winter. There's a harbour. beautiful view to the sea and nice ships, all kinds. Maybe someone there grew a brain and offers boat trips for tourists. Gotta ask. Oh, and there's the Icebraker- ship Sampo. You can go visit it inside.

* Tornio is a growing border town. Twin city is what they're calling this nice place now. The Swedish town Haparanda is right next to it. They're building us a joined downtown now. Lots of places to shop. big_smile There's lots of beautiful sceenery (nature and old houses), and you can go rafting at the Kukkolakoski. Oh, and there's lots of war memorial signs all over the town. Not that I'm into war, they're just really hard to miss. And ofcourse you can climb the hundreds of stairs up to the water tower (one of those war signs in the tower too sayng it stood there 1918 and served as a post) to see the whole town at once. There's an elevator too but it's broken a lot.
*Um, what else.. You can meet me! big_smile Come with me to our summerplace, really old house that survived the wars. You'll be trapped there with us without electricity and running water but enjoying the clean air, beautiful view and the traditional sauna. lol Well, it's not toally without electricity, we have a generator so we can watch tv. Oh, did I mention the old fashioned out house as in no wc. :rofl: Tempting, huh?

And about Norwey..
If you'll ever go to Norway, I recommend an island called Senja. It's just out of Tromso. There's a huge bridge from Tromso to Senja. I spent three weeks there 1998. It's so beautiful you would never believe it. And there's lots of sights in Senja. The ocean is different color in each beach. And there's this smaller island at the north side called husö (hus=house; ö=island in norge). It's 1km long and it's full of houses. And I saw these cute tiny whales there.

#1482 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 31 Oct 08 :: 19:43

I just got back home. I took JTT to the airport and on the way back I got to drive my self. He drove like a raving lunatic again so I was a bit nervous driver tonight. Shaking a little because of his driving. I should have stayed at the airport cafe for a while to calm a bit. That dude is developing serious case of road rage.. What should I do about that?  He was the main reason I was so nervous on the wheel.. That plus I hate to drive in the dark. And the roads were a bit icy here and there. This is a dangerous time of the year to be driving..

If he gets me killed with that driving and makes my kids orphans, I shall be haunting him for the rest of his life. MUAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! lol

I bought a lot of candy incase we actually get a lot of trick 'r treaters this year. I guess I'm going to have to try paint the kids' faces with something. Maybe I'll have time to go buy some face paints for them... big_smile Um, I have this green fuzzy suit for my youngest one. If I'll invent something funny for his legs and hands and head, it might actually qualify as a costume. :rofl: And if the oldest is going as a (zombie?-) princess, I only need to think of something funny for the middle one.. What heck could that be..

Well, the mail man/lady disapointed me again. No books for me. Damn. I'm actually getting paranoid about this. For a moment there I found myself thinking someone stole them from the mailbox. :rofl: I've never been this anxious about mail before. big_smile And that's something... 'cause I do a lot of mail ordering! wink

So what shall I do tonight. hmm I promissed the kids they can stay up 'till 10pm. Maybe they'll sleep later that 8am then.. After they go to bed I'm going to drink that one single long drink that I got for myself. One is enough. I don't want to be drunk when the kids are at home.. Of course I could watch some movies. I'll propably do it on this computer. big_smile I spend way too much time on tis computer! lol So you guys are stuck with me hanging around here all night long. I'll propably get a bit insomniac too. :rofl:

"...That I couldn't deny, even if the fact that he was wearing a tuxedo made me very nervous. Not quite as nervous as the dress. Or the shoe. Only one shoe, as my other foot was still securely encased in plaster. But the stiletto heel, held only by satin ribbons, certainly wasn't going to help me as I tried to hobble around."

That would have been fun to see! lol

big_smile I'd want to watch that for Halloween too. Too bad the copy I have about it doesn't work. And we have a freaking Catherine Zeta-Jones- weekend on one channels this week. Just shows how Halloween really isn't a finnish holiday yet..  There's pretty much no horror movies on at all.

Well, if the Twilight books come today, that's what I'll be doing for the whole weekend. big_smile If not.. Well, I can always watch the American Crime.. followed by Captain Corelli's mandolin so I don't get too obssessed about the agony of Ellen Page..

And a new mall opened yesterday here. Maybe I'll go check it out with the kids. R is all about the new ice cream bar. Those are pretty new at Finland too..

There was a sale at cdon.com (it's pretty much for the scandinavians, originates from Sweden) and I got 3 dvd's under 12 euros. Pretty good. big_smile

Nice story, Lynnie. smile

When I was on 3rd grade, we moved. And even if it wasn't very far away from my friends (I had 3 good friends in my old school and few less close), the fact that my school changed was enough to spoil the friendships. No more the place where we mostly met. Even when I still visited that town almost every weekend, we drifted apart. Sad. I tried to reconnect with them when I turned 14 and we were in the same school again. It was just too awkward for us all so we gave up. Two-three years ago I found out one of those friends, the one I considered my first best friend, lives in this same town now. So we tried to reconnect again. We have more incommon now, we both having kids and all, but still we aren't really close. She makes me uncomfortable. Like she thinks she's better than me...

When we moved 3rd grade, my school changed from a small school to a big school and I became pretty shy. Ever since I've had a hard time making new friends. I've always had a friend or two but I was never popular. I didn't even want to be. I always thought that the quality was better than the quantity when it comes to friends. big_smile

Hey, any plans for the Halloween? big_smile

It's relatively new holiday in Finland. Last year we went to a friends place for a kids Halloween party. This year my friend isn't having any and it's too late for me to do it. My first born's friends at the neighbour are having a party so she'll propably go there. What the heck am I going to do to her princess dress to make it more... Halloween? roll smile

***

And another thing. If the mail man (or rather lady, I think our's is a female) won't bring me my new books and/or something nice from Tina tomorrow, I'll be pretty darn cranky next weekend. JTT is flying to Helsinki for DigiExpo http://www.finnexpo.fi/digiexpo/default … anguage=en, the largest electronics fair in the whole country. I could finally read a book late till dawn without someone saying it's dumb to stay up because of a book..:/

#1493 Re: Square Eyes » Video/ TV Poll » 30 Oct 08 :: 16:53

Nice instructions, Illinois. Nice to know, even when I already got the DVD out. (edit, there's no such hole or button under our player. I'll check the back panel later. Maybe it's there. Or JTT will check. I'm afraid to touch it anymore. Maybe I'll make it worse. lol )
That player seems to have grown a personality now. I tried to turn the whole machine off again and it did. But it opened the drawer while doing it. And when I turn the player on, it closes again. But when I turned it off again, it opened again. So there it is; staring at me with it's mouth open. Should I call the exorcist?

*********************************************************************
********************************************************************

EDIT. This doesn't really belong in this thread so I'll just add here.

The problem was about the DVD. It messed up the whole player. But after running a lens cleener it worked right again with the other DVD's. Oh shoot, I've gotta play the role of a nagging customer today when I'll go ask if I could change the DVD...

#1494 Re: Square Eyes » Video/ TV Poll » 30 Oct 08 :: 15:09

Damn.. I should have knocked on wood or something after telling you how great that dvd player is and it's never been broken.... :doh: It really doesn't like the new Shark-dvd. I just tried to put it on for the kids and it totally froze. It shows the menus but when I pressed play, it just showed the Dolby surround-add and then just blank. Black screen. And now the whole player is frozen. It won't even open the dvd-case or go off. Only three buttons that do work are the volume-buttons and the radio-button. What the heck happenned? I guess JTT is gonna have a lot fun tonight trying to fix it. He can fix pretty much anything. big_smile But do you guys have any hints what it might be?

Most of them are ok, and wide screen. That's a first vid there (that I saw) that's linked to that videosite. I think it's that other site's fault that it's not 16:9.
