Classic, they aired "wonderfalls" opposite JOA.
Actually I kind of like "wonderfalls" (although you are right that it doesn't have the depth of JOA), and I'm not saying any of these are the same show, it is just that there is that element of an other worldly force (usually religious) which guides the main character to do good. Often in ways that don't make sense to the main character until after it all plays out. What made JOA special, was that it did so much more with that premise.
Really, I knew I hadn't heard about "wonderfalls" until long after it had come and gone. It is strange that 2 shows with so many similarities could have appeared with no common inspiration.
I have been trying to think of all of the shows which have "borrowed" from JOA since it was cancelled. There was "Wonderfalls", "Saving Grace", and recently "Eli Stone". It seems like I am forgetting some. Any ideas?
I have watched all of the episodes from the beginning up to "Secret Service" multiple times. But from "trial and error" until the end, I have only watched those one time. Trial and error is an excellently made episode, and is really intersting to talk about, but it feels like a really great episode of a different series. Adam acts so far out of character, that it just doesn't feel like him. If the series had continued, they probably would have tied it all back in, and those last 4 episodes would have felt more like a part of the series.
I can completely understand watching the episodes, they are excellent in so many ways (the acting as has been said, but also the dialog in "the scene" is really perfect.) But for me, I have really never had a desire to watch those 4 again.
Thanks
As to who votes on these things, I have. Although what I vote for never seems to win. Last time I voted on Drama Series was JOA's year. You rate the shows 1 through 5. I had The Sopranos dead last on my ballot (I am sure you can guess what was first), and of course The Sopranos won.
BTW I see I have become a Fangirl, cool.
And they always give the awards to feature actors who do TV, (Robert Duval, Sally Field, Helen Mirren), especially if they have oscars. I think it is some kind of inferiority thing.
Part of the reason you were the only 2 on here is that they show the emmys tape delayed across the country, (pretty ridiculous actually), so the show is still pretty early here, most of those people haven't won yet. Although, I am an impatient type I guess, so I just look up the winners online. Usual crop of winners, a few who deserving winners, and a lot who don't.
FYI "the Changling" isn't a remake of the George C Scott film (I had the same thought when I first heard about it). Sounds like it is more of a Body Snatchers kind of story.
I hadn't even heard about him before, it is really interesting stuff. And it is sad that I only learned about him when he died.
MI3 was on cable this morning, and I was pretty sure that Diane was in one of Simon's scenes, so I left it on while I was doing some other stuff, and paid attention during Simon's scenes. I did spot her. No lines of dialog, and if you blink you might miss her. In a scene near the end of the movie, Simon is on the phone with Tom. Simon is nervious and looking around throughout the scene, and in one shot, one of his assistants, Diane, goes close by him and smiles at him, causing him to be slightly scared. The shot is about 5 seconds (at most) long. And I am pretty sure that is her only appearance. (she may be in the background in Simon's first scene, early in the movie, but I didn't spot her). So, if you are still interested, that is where to see her in the movie.
First, I must thank the JOA IMDB board because that is where Deb told me about your board, which has been a nice addition to my life. A place where I can talk with some bright friendly people, about a show which ended a while ago, but which I continue to think about.
However, most of the boards there are full of jerks and worse. Have you ever checked out the board for the kid who played Rocky on JOA? My daughter goes to school with him, and she wanted to look him up on IMDB. So, we did, and since we were there, I looked at his board. It has lots of posts from someone who is clearly obsessed with the kid (and I gotta tell you, it sounds like an adult), and the poster is looking for personal information about the kid. I had to warn my daughter to NEVER respond to things like this (she might have innocently given the name of their school, and then who knows what might have happened).
Kind of got off on a tangent. but basically, ignore the bastards!!!
That is amazing about the cast and crew watching the episodes together. I have never heard of that before, (except sometimes the season premieres), but that helps explain the high quality of the series, and the amazing attention to detail. they really cared, that is truelly refreshing.
Okay, I can't judge the attractiveness of the slicked back hair very well, but I really like the slicked back hair in this episode. I do remember being a teenage boy, and most teenage boys are completely clueless as to what really looks good. So, when I see the slicked back hair, it seems really sweet to me. He is trying to look his best for her, (and obviously failing), but that only makes it cuter. If he had actually looked his best, it wouldn't have been so right.
Then definately DON'T bother watching it. He has a very small part, and there is lots of Cruise. Rewatching something else would be time better spent.
I was gonna mention him in my reply (but forgot), he is always appealing and very funny. Wish he would do more.
"Still Crazy" was damn funny, and also kind of sweet.
Simon was the only highlight of Mission Impossible III.
If some of you are old, that would make me ancient!
Glad to see someone included Cary Grant, one of the great underappriciated actors. Among current actors, I am always impressed with Edward Norton (except maybe "Keeping the Faith"), Leo Dicaprio has been getting better and better, and Johnny Depp can be amazing (although sometimes he misses wildly).
I remember when I saw "Panic Room" (whick I loved), I did look up Jared Leto on IMDB, that was the first time I noticed him.
As to Mr T, he also starred in "Rocky III", that was the thing which made him famous and led to "The A-Team"
Ensemble casts: again I gotta go old school, St Elswhere had an amazing cast
Last randon point: as well as the other british shows mentioned which I love, I would add "Black Adder" to the list. I wish they would quit making Bean movies, and try a Black Adder movie
Favorite Grace moment: at the end of "Anonymous" when she sees the poems being dropped everywhere. The way she looks around at everyone, like she is kind of embarrassed, and yet happy. It is one of the clearest views we get of her (behind the facade she puts up).
Something just occurred to me. I can't remember Adam and Glynis ever exchanging words, speaking directly with each other. Am I forgetting something? If not, isn't that kinda weird?
It is really weird, the closest scene I can remember is in "3rd Grade Ashtray", when Glynnis comes up to Adam and Joan to ask about Luke's health. Glynis is talking to both of them (but she barely looks at Adam). I have grown to assume that everything is intentional on JOA, but I can't come up with a reason for this one.
It's very funny, (not quite as funny as Shaun), and they did a great job of pointing out every cliche of the action genre.
What is special about their films is that they obviously love the movies they are lampooning. As you laugh with them, you also feel their love of the movies and grow fonder of the source movies. I had gotten sick of all the zombie movies until I saw Shaun, now, I am open to the genre again. And Hot Fuzz did the same thing for action films.
I watched this one again tonight, and I must agree about the last scene, it is really sweet. His gentle touching of her foot, is a great detail (shows intimacy without saying anything) And I always love a love scene where no one uses the word "love".
There is another special Adam moment in that scene. It is Adam who realizes that he and Joan are responsible for causing the girl pain. Yes, Grace pushed for it, and Friedman brought it about, and Iris actually read it outloud, but Joan and Adam had the ability to stop it. And if you have the ability to stop something and choose not to, then you are as responsible as anyone.
Adam's ability to see things that others overlook, his special view of the world is one of the things which makes him such a unique character, and is one of the things which causes Joan (and the audience) to love him.
I think it is pretty clear that Adam falls for Joan during "The Fire and the Wood". By the beginning of "Touch Move" it is clear that if he isn't in love, he is well on the way (based on his reaction to the wrestler discussion). I think he falls for her when she comes to visit his shed at the end of Fire and Wood, but there are a few other moments during that episode which could work be it as well.
Joan is a harder question. She is so clueless about Adam's obvious interest, and she is definately stuck in friend mode. My impression is that at the end of "Bringeth It On", when he says that wonderful thing about how he doesn't care what she does he just "likes hanging out with you cause you're Jane". At that moment he definately rises in her eyes, but I'm still not sure she has fallen for him.
I think it actually happens for her in "Jump" (there I go again, all things lead to Jump), but I think it finally happens for her in the shed when Adam tells her he is scared that the letter will say his mother's suicide was his fault. That vulnerability (and her reaction to it) is what finally gets her to see her own feelings. There are a couple of reasons way this seems right to me. First of all, she leaves almost immediately after this, almost too quickly, and she seems more nervious at this point, like something new has been added to the situation. I am probably reading too much into that. The other thing is that the next time she expects to see Adam (he shows up at her house for the letter reading), she has put the wave in her hair, which she always does when she wants to look good. Now I don't think she was dressing up for the science fair, so to me she was dressing up for Adam, and that's the first time she has done that.
Kind of rambling, but what do you guys think?
I saw the links in one of the posts, and I look forward to reading them in the future. I think fan fiction is interesting, and some of it is more creative then the originals, because it is driven by a real love of the characters. I am stilling thinking through the show, and want to finish that before I move on.
