The problem at work is, I have this thing about getting things right. "Good enough" isn't good enough for me. So, now that someone higher up has suddenly decided we're going to outsource our backlog of work, I've been put in charge of doing the inventory on the files before we send 'em out, plus doing some of my regular work. Right now we have about 40-50 boxes of files to go out, and there will probably be 10-20 more before we're done. All this is due "sometime in December" though we still don't have an actual date yet. The supervisor says I'm putting too much stress on myself, and no one else is putting any kind of time pressure on me. I think we're either speaking different languages, or are on different planets, I'm not sure which.
I need someone like Adam to show me how to chill out and still get things done. Maybe I should watch those S2 DVDs soon!
I went to the theater today to see Happy Feet (somewhat disappointed; maybe there was just too much hype ahead of time?) and when we walking out, I saw a poster for Alpha Dog. I hope that means it will be playing at that theater when it comes out, so I can actually get to it.
Cool! Mine's about 350 pages at the moment, 290,000 words. I'm pretty sure it'll be about 300,000 when it's done. 100's almost complete, and part of 101 (aka the Epilogue) is finished. I really want to finish this thing by the end of the year.
I really want to watch this, at least a couple of episodes and the extras. I keep thinking I'll get around to doing various things on the weekend, then other stuff comes up, and I can't. Especially at this time of year, when my mom goes crazy decorating the house, and keeps needing to go out on errands to find things that aren't easy to find. And of course, I have to go with her.
Heh, my new supervisor was telling me on Friday that I need to stop putting myself under so much stress, and just relax. He doesn't have any idea of my fannish life or how much energy and time that consumes! He's just talking about me not being so highly strung at work.
Glad there's at least some Chris stuff to look forward to in the extras.
Yeah, I have to agree on the Skeet love. That episode where he's possessed is really difficult to watch, because Skeet is just too convincing. Now that Jericho is taking a break, I might have to start watching Miracles again. Though that would have to come after I finish Season 1 of Supernatural, and Season 2 of JoA. And the 1985 Twilight Zone series. And Grey's Anatomy Season 2. And both seasons of Dark Angel, when they arrive.
It's not even Christmas, and I already have a huge backlog of stuff to watch! Not that I'm complaining, I just wish I had enough hours in the day to keep up with all my fandoms.
I agree that Touched is worth seeing. It's been a few years, so I should refresh my memory on that one, but I remember I liked it, though it's very strange.
I haven't listened to any of the Chris soundslips yet; see above. It should be fun to hear, though! I'm working 7 hours a day now, and should start working 8 in January, but possibly before that. I need the money, and I still enjoy the job, though it's getting more stressful all the time. It's really cut down on my fannish time, which is annoying, but necessary.
I just printed out the latest few installments of Butterflies (unadulterated version), though I haven't had time to read any of it. As I'm sure you realize, it's ginormous!
I'm still working on my story; I've posted 99 chapters and I think I can finish it in two more. I've also been reading a ton of Supernatural fic, and printing out tons more. One of these days I'll get around to everything. In the meantime, keep up the good work!
I'm glad we at least have more info on what's available. I wonder if there are no actor commentaries because the actors are all involved in other projects now? It seems to be easier to get actors to do commentaries for shows they're still involved with (i.e. a previous season's box set) than look back at something they did previously.
I really think the marketing people at every network should hire a fan in some kind of advisory capacity. "All right, what type of merchandise would you want to spend your hard-earned money on? What would make that item more enticing? What would turn you off?" etc.
That's what's so fascinating, is seeing how little is actually on the page. It makes you realize how differently it all could have played with different actors. I agree that by this time they were so comfortable with each other, so trusting, that it all seemed very natural and real.
So much of it is expression, body language, line delivery. "It's late." "It is?" would have sounded completely different from other actors. So much of it is that Chris and Amber really seem to know their characters, deep down. Adam always seemed real to me, because Chris seemed to believe in him. In the wrong hands, Adam (in general) could have come across as creepy-pathetic, or totally clueless, or just someone Joan would want to avoid. Instead he was endearing, because he was so believable with his, "I'm in my own little world, yo, and I'm perfectly happy here." It was fascinating to see Joan by turns checking out his world, and slowly leading him by the hand into her world.
Or...it's Bonnie's fault. 'Cause she secretly digs The O.C., ya know.
Thanks, Deb! I'm definitely planning on seeing it. I agree a spoiler thread would be great. I'm not sure if I'll read it or not, but I can sure understand the urge to talk about it if people do want to know stuff ahead of time.
I have a harder time with the family aspect of Medium. I am not fond of kids, especially little kids, even more so if they're irritating little brats. But it's interesting to see how Allison handles them, as opposed to, say, the world's worst mother, Lynette from Desperate Housewives. And Joe is also a much better father than Lynette's husband, Tom.
On Dexter, Rita's kids are interesting, and not nearly as annoying as most. Plus, it helps that I've got a little more info on them from the books.
Dexter's great. I read the first book a couple of years ago, and the sequel. I just re-read them recently. There are some major differences, but I'm really enjoying the series. I'm glad Medium is coming back, especially with Javi working on it; in fact, he wrote the season premiere. Should be very interesting.
Supernatural grew on me after a while. I liked the premise, and the brothers, but some of the episodes didn't work for me. I really like the casting on Numb3rs, because it's a good, solid ensemble piece. Again, the family interaction is really enjoyable. That was one of the things I really liked about JoA, the family dynamics.
Okay, that makes sense. I didn't know Chris was going to be in the movie until fairly recently. Too bad they didn't get Jorge Garcia.
I've never been 100% sure, but I think Father Geek, who plays Harry in the film, is actually Harry's real father, which makes the whole thing even more bizarre.
Really looking forward to this one!
Yeah, I can't stand watching something just to have noise on. I much prefer peace and quiet if there isn't anything specific I want to watch or listen to. Still, I'm surprised at the number of good shows that are on this season, a lot of them even on the networks! Most of the time, the shows I like are always in imminent danger of cancellations, but most of the ones I really like are actually quite safe...Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, Jericho, Desperate Housewives, Supernatural, Numb3rs, House. At first I was worried about Jericho, but I'm glad I was mistaken there.
Heh, just saw the trailer! Thanks for the direct link, TeeJay. Looks like a lot of fun. I've been hearing about this movie, and wanting to see it, since long before I knew Chris would be in it. Can't wait to see it!
BTW, there are other articles, or mentions of Fanboys at AICN. You might use Search on the site to look for earlier articles. I don't think any of the earlier ones mention Chris, but Harry Knowles, who created and runs AICN, is supposed to be a character in the film. I seem to recall he wasn't available to play himself, so they had to find someone who looks like him. He had a lot of inside info on Phantom Menace ahead of time.
There's also a very small article at Ain't It Cool News http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30668?fa … hit_online with a link that takes forever to load, so I haven't seen it yet. I'll check it out tonight or tomorrow.
Nice captions! Thanks for all your hard work.
I think this is one of those "must see" Chris performances.
I'll miss it, but it will be a relief to have a couple fewer shows to watch for a while. My TV schedule is too crowded, especially since Mom wants me to watch certain shows with her that are okay, but I wouldn't care if I missed them. I have too many other things to do to spend 2-3 hours per night watching TV. She thinks nothing of watching 4 hours a night, every night of the week, and if there's nothing else on, she'll watch the shopping channels. Argh!
Yep! I hated him on Buffy, but loved him on Firefly, despite seeing Firefly after that Buffy arc. I think he was pretty well-cast here.
I like the way that Jericho is starting to answer some questions, without giving so much away that viewers might feel they know enough to stop watching. They seem to at least be doing that in a logical way. There's only so long Jake can go without telling someone where he's been, at least for some of the time. And Hawkins is getting more intriguing all the time.
Heh, I can sort of understand that with Lost. I was thrilled to see an actor I dearly love, however, in a prominent guest-star role. Hopefully that's vague enough for TeeJay!
Ooh, thanks, Deb! Good news. I like the idea of splitting up the season, like they're doing for Lost and The Shield. I think with certain shows it can get very confusing for new or infrequent viewers to keep things straight when they see episodes out of order. It's worse when you see, for instance, a character who's dead one week, and "alive" the next, and the viewer might not realize it's because they're watching a rerun.
Thanks! When I first posted it, there was no reaction, since hardly anyone reads my journal, and only one of them used to watch JoA. By that time he was a very casual viewer.
Yeah, it broke my heart to find my client was actually guilty. I honestly felt betrayed, like he'd lied to me. Almost like he was a real human being, and not a fictional character.
I think the one from "Drive, He Said," was the best, but he does use that expression a lot. The "peed on the carpet" interpretation is right on. Adam knew better, he could have waited, but wanted to make a memorable statement about how his needs were more important than anyone else's feelings. He knew he'd get caught, and get in trouble for it, but the momentary satisfaction was greater than the fear of consequences.
I wonder if the trial, and Joan's subsequent discovery and reaction, was enough of a whack on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper to keep it from ever happening again? I think it was, 'cause he's smarter than the average puppy.
It's not all that complicated, but you had the recaps under the "Adam and Joan" section for JoA, and for some reason, I would have thought they'd be in their own section in the JoA area. People will eventually find them, especially since most people going to this site for JoA-related info would likely gravitate there anyway, but it's not where I would have thought to look. Probably because I'm used to recaps that cover the whole show, and not just the Adam/Joan aspects, it didn't occur to me right away to look there.
I was also confused because there were some recaps in the discussion thread, as well as posted in the other section. I do spend more time on the forum than other parts of the site, so I'm not all that familiar with the overall setup yet.
Note: I obviously wrote this before the episode aired. Afterwards, I couldn't bring myself to go over the episode again and again in order to do a recap. Plus, I was so disgusted, with the episode, the writers and the ridiculous way they wrote Adam, I just was too discouraged to continue.
Current mood: hopeful
Joan Girardi vs. Adam Rove & Former Fans vs. Adam
Warning, spoilers ahead for the next Joan of Arcadia episode, "Trial and Error" to be aired 4/1/05, a most unfortunate date.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I'm here on behalf of my client, Adam Rove. Since, as you know, the American judicial system allows every defendant representation, I am here as Mr. Rove's defense attorney.
It seems as though my client has been put on trial without a sufficient amount of evidence. The defendant is accused of committing infidelity with one Bonnie Nolastname, a student at the same school attended by Mr. Rove and Ms Girardi. There has been much supposition and speculation, based on hearsay and circumstantial evidence. We are here to look at the facts.
The facts as we know them, are these: Mr. Rove and his girlfriend, Ms. Joan Girardi, have been dating for a little over a year. During that time, they have had many difficulties, individually and as a couple. They come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and different family structures. They have only known each other for approximately a year and a half. Ms. Girardi is 17 years old, as of last November. Mr. Rove turned 17 very recently.
In the past Ms. Girardi destroyed a piece of artwork created by Mr. Rove, with no explanation ever given. This caused a rift between the two that lasted for several weeks. Despite Ms. Girardi's many attempts to apologize, without a sufficient explanation of her actions, Mr. Rove was not able to forgive her for this act of vandalism. Ms. Girardi has admitted to doing other things that have appeared to be done for the sole purpose of hurting Mr. Rove, though she claims to have a good reason for doing so. She has not provided an explanation or motivation for any of these actions, just pleaded for forgiveness.
Mr. Rove has suffered emotional damage and separation anxiety due to the suicide of his mother. He has been extremely patient and understanding towards Ms. Girardi's often eccentric behavior, and put his own feelings aside unless a traumatic memory is triggered. In such events the need for self-preservation overcomes the need for love and acceptance.
Both Mr. Rove and Ms. Girardi have been observed on numerous occasions, in front of witnesses, arguing or disagreeing passionately. Witnesses have claimed that both are prone to overdramatization and histrionics over offenses that seemed to the witness to be trivial or not warranting each such strong reactions. Ms. Girardi has several times accused Mr. Rove of being unfaithful, and on one occasion, provoked a physical fight in the school hallway with her best friend, accusing her friend and Mr. Rove of cheating on her. Mr. Rove was one of the people attempting to break up the fight.
Ms. Girardi was suspicious of Mr. Rove's motivation in hiring one Stevie Marks, female, as his assistant at his work at a design studio. Ms. Girardi's chief objection was that Ms. Marks was too blonde and perky to be able to do the job she was hired to do. Mr. Rove later admitted that, despite his general aversion to perkiness, he hired Ms. Marks more for her ability to provoke jealousy in Ms. Girardi than specifically for her qualifications as an artist.
On a recent occasion, both Mr. Rove and Ms. Girardi lied to their respective parents, in order to spend a weekend together attending a concert out of town. Due to a regrettable lapse in communication, neither of them inquired deeply enough into the nature of the sleeping arrangements, and whether such accommodations were intended solely for the purpose of sleep. Each had different plans for how the evening would go, and the combination of their lack of communication and mistaken assumptions led to a very upsetting, frustrating and disturbing weekend for them both. Mr. Rove claimed later that he didn't know the reason for his actions, and regretted his behavior. It was suggested to him that perhaps his hormones had overbalanced the logical functioning of his brain, a condition sometimes known as "testosterone poisoning".
Shortly after that, Ms. Girardi questioned Mr. Rove's lack of attention when she was speaking to him. He explained that he was tired due to spending the previous night writing a paper that was due for school. When further questioned, he explained that he had to finish the paper early, because he had plans to go to a college interview that weekend. The interview would take place in another state. Ms. Girardi inquired whether she could attend the interview with him. Mr. Rove was not enthused about the idea, and tried to discourage her from going with him, citing her mother's likely reaction at the thought of then spending the night together anywhere. Mr. Rove also questioned his own ability to control his hormones, and subsequent reaction to those hormones, should he and Ms. Girardi once again find themselves sharing the same sleeping quarters.
Ms. Girardi later found out that Mr. Rove had not attended the college interview and had in fact, not returned three of her phone calls. He claimed the interview was postponed, and he subsequently decided to spend time alone. He doesn't know why he didn't return phone calls, but didn't think he should have to explain his every action and motivation to Ms. Girardi. Recently, both Ms. Girardi and Mr. Rove became acquainted with Bonnie Nolastname, who seemed, to witnesses, to exhibit a rather extreme and perhaps unhealthy fixation on Mr. Rove.
These are the facts as we know them so far. The rest of my opening statement is speculation based on the script of a mock trial. At a school event, Ms. Girardi was chosen to prosecute the case in the murder of A. Giant. She suggested Mr. Rove play the part of Jack, the accused killer. During the course of this mock trial, which has not yet taken place, she will accuse him of other crimes in addition to murder. She will accuse him of selling a cow because it no longer produced milk, and stealing a goose from the giant, before killing the giant. The goose is alleged to have produced golden eggs, which would presumably have set Jack up for life, financially. This would have been the ultimate nest egg for Jack's future.
During the course of the trial, Ms. Girardi will employ some imagery that is heavily laden with metaphors designed to have emotional impact. In fact, these metaphors are likely to stir the emotions of not only the defendant, Mr. Rove, but also the prosecutor, Ms. Girardi. Given what we have seen of Ms. Girardi's rather excitable nature, and tendency to jump to conclusions, it is quite possible she will invest these metaphors with deeper meanings that have associations in her mind with her relationship to Mr. Rove. It is unknown at this time whether Mr. Rove will understand the full implications of these metaphors, but given his rather sensitive nature, it is likely he will feel overwhelmed, and since he often has trouble expresses his feelings, he may respond emotionally rather than logically to the accusations.
It is likely that their behavior will provoke strong reactions to any witnesses of the trial. In fact, these witnesses may be confused as to the vehemence of the defense, and may well wonder if both participants are indeed following the script, or are deviating from the script to further their own agenda. It is quite possible that this mock trial will cause errors in judgment on the part of both participants.
In response to the strength of emotions these two individuals have demonstrated in the past, it is quite possible that the emotions stirred up by the mock trial will carry over into their personal relationship. They made both have difficulty separating the events of the case and their presentation at the mock trial from their own feelings, imagination, and insecurities.
It is quite possible that if these two individuals do not learn to communicate their feelings in a timely manner, rather than waiting for a future time to express their thoughts, they will be unable to continue their relationship as it stands now. They are both extremely emotional, perhaps even highly strung individuals, who have very different ways of coping with stress. Neither of them responds well to stress regarding their romantic relationship. There seems to be doubt in both of their minds regarding the true feelings of the other about their relationship. There appears to be insecurity and mistrust, as well as communication difficulties, that would seem to inhibit a truly emotionally and physically intimate relationship. It is also quite possible that these individuals have differing views of their relationship, and mutually exclusive goals.
It might be advisable for both parties to take some time apart, to consider their own needs, and the needs of the other, and determine whether their mutual needs can be met by each other. I ask you to consider the facts, and find Mr. Rove not guilty of the heinous crime of cheating on his girlfriend because she wouldn't have sex with him.
